This was a really great one-shot, friend. Well done! And complete with an important lesson that not many HTTYD writers get into (especially those who have Hiccstrid having a sexual relationship and acting like they're having a honking hoot of a time — especially the first time. It's annoying.) I'm just glad that this fanfic dives into the seriousness of such an act. Though, personally-speaking, I don't believe that Hiccup and Astrid are the kind of people who'd do that until marriage. Hiccup, because he's not your typical Viking. Astrid, because having just regained her family's honor, I doubt she would be willing to jeopardize that. Just my thoughts, though.
I find it interesting that you talk about the fanfic that have the characters do something sexual and think it's just a hoot, or are immediately good at it. When that NEVER happens, epecially the first time. And how Hiccup gets turned into a sex god and Astrid into a seductive minx. I mean seriously? Oftentimes when people write these two in a sexual way, they're usually not in-character.
While it was expected for men in Old Norse culture to have had laid with a woman at least once before getting married, women were expected to stay pure until marriage, since the contracts depended on that. Usually men who laid with women before marriage were normally bed slaves or a low-born woman. It was usually frowned upon for a man to have sex with a fellow freewoman or someone of high social standing. That usually ended in blood feuds and duels to avenge their family's soiled honor. Thus, it wouldn't have ended well for Hiccup and Astrid, and I don't personally think that Stoick would've been fine with that because of this thing. However, this is history. Since the HTTYD franchise basically gives the middle finger to historical accuracy throughout its entirety, Hiccup and Astrid are fine.
As to Astrid and her taking precautions in case she got captured is spot-on and totally what I think Astrid would've done had RTTE not been made for kids. In fact, considering how many times Astrid, Ruffnut and Heather end up captured, they would've been raped in real life at some point. Again, had RTTE or the entire Dreamworks Dragons franchise been made for adults. Which it hasn't.
Concerning the herbs, they were most definitely not adequate. They were unpredictable. While women had a general knowledge of herbs for cooking and healing and stuff, only the healers had expert knowledge. Even then, there were herbs that they weren't entirely aware of all of the side effects of depending on size and length of dosage. After all, they didn't have labs where they could test the herbs and classify their full usage and to avoid certain scenarios that could occur if using a particular herb at a particular dosage for a particular length of time. Again, it could poison them, make them sick, kill them, or even make them infertile (both men and women) depending on what herb they used, how much they took, and for how long. If Astrid So basically the general rule of adequate birth control was to "keep it in your pants." If men didn't want to do that, there were female slaves they could bed without having to deal with the consequences. And without the blood feuds and duels and honor killings. Norse culture was very . . . interesting back then. lol XD
Again, great job with this story. It was very well-written, the characters were spot-on, the topic was deep and appropriate without being too graphic or crude or anything. Well done! I hope that you'll write more in the future.

As for the herbs: Effective or not, that's what they had back then. Aside from, you know, *just not doing it.* And some mixes were probably about as effective as modern contraceptives. There are a few common herbs used in cooking that women who are trying to get pregnant (or already are pregnant) should probably not take in large quantities. Granted, it'd take a *lot* of rosemary to trigger a miscarriage, but it might still be a good idea to skip the Mediterranean diet for a few months.
I know *way* too much about this sort of thing for someone who's never going to have sex and probably can't have kids, anyway.
