Quick note: even modern UK universities don't normally have 'dorms' (the expectation is that every student will have an individual study/bedroom even if they are living in halls), and a nineteenth-century Oxford student in a traditional college would have had his own 'set' (sitting-room plus bedroom) on a staircase leading off the college 'quad' (a courtyard with the buildings arranged around it in a square -search "Oxford college quad" on the Web for lots of pictures), with a 'scout' or college servant to clean his rooms for him.
