for The Mystery of Shirley Blythe

I was going to go story by story, and I still might, but this just jumped out at me and demanded it’s one review. I’m in deeply unreasonable tears of laughter here over those five clean outfits! The sympathetic part of me has thus impulse to hug young Rilla, but I’m mostly too busy weeping over five clean outfits leaving Rilla with spares. I live too that she’s got this clockwork system with time built in go socialise. She might be bringing up a baby by hand, but she’s also 15 and don’t be sacrificing her social life to do it! Oh, inexperienced youth. (I do not, I hasten to add, have small people. I’ve just minded enough of them to find this funny and poignant all at once.) I love too that when it all goes wrong Rilla rises to the occasion. She finds something to bundle Jims info, but she’s also convinced she’s the first woman to be caught out like this. Morgan, you nitwit book, you have failed her completely. I demand Gwendolyn on Infant Care with commiserating and illustrated anecdotes. Someone can give it to Rilla for Christmas. That said, Anne does a beautiful job bring reassuring, as does Gilbert. You even correct some if their canon disinterest in poor Jims. And so we arrive at the real point of the narrative, namely Shirley’s adoption, and I cannot wait.

This was such a fun spin on the age conundrum. Lots of things stand out; the twins each having a baking specialty, each child missing something different about home, Jem getting in on the narrative joke, Gilbert insisting on telling the story every year and Shirley suffering through it because it means double sweets. I love Anne’s variable booties, too. That is exactly the kind of thing my mum is prone to doing - drives the brother-object batty. Though theses a bit of scorpion sting in that ending, ‘at least no one will be going to war.’ But I love your observation there about how Anne cannot see the future in her delivery if it. Just as well no one invited Gertrude Oliver to the table! And of course Susan’s Gospel Of Shirley contradicts the good doctor. If that isn’t their canon relationship typified in print, I don’t know what is!

Jack has never met a listener to The At here, that’s what. We exist to torment BBC with continuity, like how many horses are at The Stables, what their names are and how many hands tall they are. So, you know, nothing like anyone here...nothing at all...

Though I got a kick out of this because honestly, what WAS the editor thinking that no one caught the wonky maths? I mean, Maud was terrible at it; Emily managed to be twelve twice, Pat Similarly wanders around time-wise, but Shirley takes the cake and the biscuit and the cream tea. This is a great little insight into editorial mismanagement, the inattentive junior editor, the unconcerned senior one, and a cracking start to the story.
