No wonder Zack's only real goal was to keep Cloud alive if you think about it. I'm pretty sure he was seeking death at the end of Crisis Core because Cloud was finally coming out of his catatonia and would be able to survive without him. He just had to make sure Cloud had a chance since he wasn't fighting fit.
