I read, I was exasperated, I laughed, I cringed, I was on the edge of my seat, I was scandalized, and through it all a smile never left my face. My reading of these chapters so far made me want more.
I won't give any real criticism, I can't. It's a wonderfully self indulgent fic that I hope will address the flaws of the show in it's own way. I will give my own impressions though that might read like criticism though, because I felt a LOT when reading it.
The first chapter was rough. It's going to be, there's very few ways to ease into the 'omgee I'm in a show.' But not being able to really recall the 'old world' was the better choice. Too many people linger on that and turn their fics into melodramas. Plus how else are you going to change things if you didn't have some knowledge of the world you're in?
It's nice to see too that gem stuff was taught in schools. Makes me question if Steven was ever homeschooled.
The stuff with pearl, yeah I'll admit. Thats where I was scandalized. Admittingly though it fulfills a personal fantasy and never overstayed its welcome like many, many, other fics with similar scenes.
It would be interesting to see where it goes. Here's hoping for the endgame that Steven shatters white diamond (who never actually earned her redemption and was still very much a space dictator) and takes her role in absolute power. Would be fun to see that there was a reason they kept trying to grow their ranks was that there was an honest threat to them out there. But I'm way ahead of myself with this.
I got hints of an actual darker Steven, and that's awesome. Can't wait to see the rest as it comes!
