He should withdraw his family to Tyrosh or the basilisk isles. Then keep Driftmark as more of an outpost. The Velaryons are more of an Essossi house than westerosi now so they should be able to keep most of their holdings across the sea. Should stockpile eggs in basilisk isles and learn as much of the Valyrian magic as possible, see if there is anything to enhance their dragons (over Valyrian steel armour for dragons. Maybe some dragon horns. There’s lots of Valyrian trewssure and books stockpiled in basallisk isles so the Valyrian must have had something about controlling dragons or dealing with civil disputes.

Why Corlys not make a couple of dozens of guns (cannons)? He can disguise them on the walls of cities and castles.

Seem like my prediction for Aegon, Laena and Daeron turn out to be true, just like how unbelievable it was that the close relationship between Houses Targaryen, Lannister and Baratheon through Aerys, Tywin and Steffon, ended with Tywin’s son killing Aerys and Steffon’s son killing Aerys’ son and taking the crown from House Targaryen. Those three friends who had such bright hopes for the future ended up having a tragic breakup. I can understand how desperate Aegon is, because after the Basilisk Isles conquest, even the Targaryens in favor of House Velaryon are now in favor of Aegon marrying Helaena as Jace and Luke actions is basically a betrayal of the faith Aegon, Baelon and Alyssa had for their house to not do any conquering until they were given the right to do so.
But to be fair as Corlys said, there was no way they could know about the riches Jace and Luke would find, and even if they did, it’s unlikely they would have share those treasures, not unless House Targaryen helped in the conquest. Still like Aegon said, the Velaryon are a close-knit family, he believing that Laena and Daeron would commit such a betrayal against their brothers for him was sadly arrogance.
I knew a Dance of Dragons was coming, but a part of me wanted to believe that it could be avoid, especially after Jace, Luke, Baela and Rhaena resolve to try and mend their families differences. Only for their actions to be the final straw that guarantees war between both houses, I wonder how they will with that knowledge. Still that faith don’t belong for a fanfic that is faithful to the tone of the source material, now I can only hope that both Houses Targaryen and Velaryon, come out of this with some of their power intact and the dragons won’t be wipe out.
Finally I will also say that I love Corlys’ reaction to the upcoming war as most readers will be cheering him on and believe that House Velaryon will defeat the arrogant Targaryens. He know that regardless who is left standing after this war, this both the worse case scenario and will end with massive devastation to both sides. Once again kudos to how you write these characters and how your writing doesn’t favor the Velaryons over Targaryens like some writers will do in your position.

First off, excellent story. I’ll gladly read every chapter that comes out
That said, the Velaryon response here, especially from Corlys, seems kind of, I don’t know, disingenuous? I understand the motivations of everyone in their family: the kids want to build upon their father’s legacy, and the parents want to expand to try and protect themselves in case a war comes. But even knowing that, and even still with the slights foisted upon them by the Targaryens, they have to know they’ve been poking the dragon the entire time.
At the end of the day, they are a vassal of the Targaryens, and frankly I can’t blame the royals for finally deciding they’re too much trouble after this latest expansion to the basilisk isles and gaggos(sp). As you have Aegon say, this act, especially the gathering of the Valyrian steel, feels very last straw-ish.
Aegon’s solution, while not great, is at least an attempt to let some steam out of the situation. The Velaryons like to play victim, but do everything in their power to exacerbate the situation.

Leave only skeleton staff at High Tide, or put as many scorpions as possible?
They should figure out how magic really works, besides sacrificing babies like the primitives have been doing.
Even if it's weak in the low fantasy setting, it's still a force multiplier.

I think there should be more prevalent influence of Corlys' introduction of Arda's literature in Velaryon society. It's a shame that you merely introduce it in the earlier chapter and not much of it left in Corlys' children.

OK, so I just read the latest chapters and I have a few questions in mind.
Do the Velaryons really want reconciliation ? Because to me it seems they are burning bridges quickly. Aegon just put himself on the line to break the stalemate and force his betrothal to Laena, now is the time to be conservative and wait for his 20th nameday so the king publicly announces it.
What do they decide to do ? To renew their expansionnist policy and make everyone doubt them. Especially Aegon. He has always been transparent with Laena and Daeron and how do they repay him ? By hiding him the real reasons of the campaign in the Basilisc Isles. It's like they want to be distrusted. Also it weakens him politically as he is considered easily manipulated by a scheming house.
Jace and Baela are being childish in their talks. Sure there are personnal issues at stake, especially between Jace and Daemon, but the crux of the matter is about politics. About the relationship and hierarchy between their two houses. Refusing to see this reality isn't going to solve the issue.
Aegon is quickly becoming my favorite in this story at the detriment of the Velaryon family. If they want reconciliation, which they absolutely need for Jace's plans, they need to make compromises with the Iron Throne or to give them something.
IT'S NOT AS IF THEY AREN'T PLANNING AN EXPANSION CAMPAIGN WHICH COULD INCLUDE ANOTHER DRAGONRIDING HOUSE... Just give them something. Your houses are going to be closely related by marriage anyway, for House Targaryen to rise with them is also beneficial to House Velaryon.
I wonder how this is going to end but the way things are going, we are heading straight for a dance between the two houses...

I wonder why Corlys doesn't abdicate the position of archon of tyrosh alongside the overseas holdings of house velaryon to Jace while holding the westeros holdings himself. It's kinda what he is doing anyway and tells the targareyns that they really should have taken the first deal they offered it won't get better especially if the potential betrothal between the crown prince and their daughter falls through.

A touch of the 40k crossed my mind, half wishing the soldiers purging the chimeras were scrsaming about abominations as they threw themselves at the fell beasts.
Seems the payoff was well worth it in thd end.
Jace was 100% right, Daemon would be insulted by the blade, and more likely to relish the thought of using it on Valaryons for the insult. Better the get pregnant, force his and his wife's hand by giving them Valaryon grandchildren to hopefully blunt their antagonism a bit, especially after all this success, and the legendary feat accomplished here.
Man, this gogossos arc was well concieved, very deep and gripping. Well done.
I imagine the Targaryens will be all the more envious of house Valaryon eclipseing their claim as the scions of old Valyria. At this point, the Valaryons have far more claim to the heirship of the dead civilization. It's actually fortunate they don't really care about the iron throne beyond wanting peace with it. And really, they should be trying to tie it to themselves, not driveing it away, but since when are Targaryens ever capable of being sensible enough to counter the mad ones among them?
