for High Tide (A Corlys Velaryon SI)

Gael truly is a scorned woman, she would have been even more bitter if she wasn't in a lovely marriage with a family. You can't blame her for being resentful as her mother unwittingly abandoned her because of a dispute with her father over Viserra. Gael's relationship to Viserra mirrors Viserra and Saera's relationship only worse as the Lady Corlys Velaryon overshadows the youngest child of Jaehaerys I.

Jaehaerys I seemed to finally realized his errors in his dying moments but it's too late to change what has already been set in motion. The Concilator seemed to realize this with Jaecaerys, Daemon and Gael as they are the most hardline of the two sides. The burden falls on Armon to salvage what he can because things shall be put to the test when Rhaenys succeeds him in the future.

Hehe, would be nice if the king felt the way Jacerys look at him familiar like how he looked at Maegor when he was younger, and realized that he had become what he hated the most; that he— Jaherys— became a Maegor come again, well I hope at least in his perspective, and die lingering in regret despair.

Alright I've seen two arguments occur in the review section, one is for reconsideration and one for going for independence. In truth both are good but alone would not do well. The simple fact is house Targaryen still has more dragons than house Velaryon. 12 to 5 in fact and a declaration of independence would mean war with the seven kingdoms, oops correction six kingdoms unless they could coop the north as well then it would be 5 kingdoms against the state of Velaryon and the North. Thing is without the dragons house Targaryen would lose badly. The Velaryon navy rules the waves much like the British navy of RL. The fact that it's expanding is another fact to consider. In short the Velaryon Navy would win most naval battles. Problem is dragons, those things are terrifying and it does make sense for Corlys to want to make peace because dragons are bad and they don't have anti air emplacements ready to kill them. So for those saying that Corlys seeking reconciliation with House Targaryen you're not wrong, Problem is full reconsilation won't work. If House Velaryon had to give up it's assets in Tyrosh and New Ghis alongside it's colonies, then it's not worth it. Better to be independent instead of that and killing dragons whilst difficult can be done, the dornish did it once and it can be repeated.

It's ironic that there hasn't been a military science academy sponsored by House Velaryon to make advancements in military technology. Since Yi Ti is like China wonder when fireworks are found and then soon gunpowder because gunpowder is really good at blowing things up, in fact having a barrage of rocket launchers shot at a dragon can endanger it's rider or suppress it. A scorpion bolt fitted with a javelin with an explosive payload can definitely murder a dragon, just damage one wing and its mission killed. Besides all this talk of potential expansion, there is a reason while those seeking reconciliation with House Targaryen are right, for now. Who says Daemon or his successors did something that will force House Velaryon to respond. One way or the other Jaeherys has effectively removed the possibility of house Velaryon becoming buddy buddy with House Targaryen, the gap is simply too wide, Jace (Corlys heir) is right in that House Targaryen cannot be trusted, they failed to give their word, who can say they'll do it again? Someone who failed to keep their promises is someone bound to not do so again. In effect I believe trying to reconcile whilst arming themselves for war is the best course of house Velaryon, wish for peace but prepare for war. Sooner or later the dance of the dragons would occur and civil way is likely if the Targaryens screwed up, Jaeherys wants them to reconsile on House Targaryen term and those terms won't be good so it's up to Jace to somehow not entangle themselves with house Targaryen and somehow carve a path that's beneficial for his house. Both sides are at an impasse, conflict is likely to occur that's why I said that reconsilation is impossible, House Targaryen has burned the bridge and it'll take considerable effort to rebuild it, if they don't well there's always the other option.

Ofc things won't go ideally, I suspect by the story narrative, Daemon and Valeryon haters will get their chance. Perhaps Aemon will die causing Rhaenrya civil war like in canon.

To get on the Targaryen's good side, and even have their support for further conquest of Essos, they could help them bring Dorne into the fold, and with some justification get rid of the Ironborn pirates.
Now it's not ideal since Targaryens lucked into Stormlands so they already have a lot of territory, but I was thinking of making Iron Islands theirs, not just another vassal kingdom.
Or maybe split them with Tullys to make them stronger and make Riverlands actually matter, as well as loyal.

Did Corlys leave a diary or something for his descendants about the Others, and future warfare with firearms or in which technology to invest?

They should speak about conquering Essos again. Myr and Lys are ripe for taking and they can sell it to faith as reclaiming their homeland since Seven originally was from Essos. Alliance pact with Bravos since both are against slavery. Not to mention Volantis is in tight spot since other slaver cities are in decline after sacked by Corlys.

Awesome chapter! I can already see Jace clashing with Daemon here. Both incredibly prideful of their own houses, both thinking the other house is a traitor and should not be respected...Yeah, if something big happens, pretty sure those 2 will be right at the center of the conflict...

Also looking forward to see what Viserra will say to her father is his death bed. I hope she won't forgive him at all. Or even show him the slightest amount of love. Let him die knowing that his pride broke his family apart.

At last we discover what Jaecaerys' ambition is and suffice to say such a grand design may throw the precarious relationship between House Targaryen and House Velaryon into serious tumult, the likes that have never been seen before. Add Jace's well founded cynicism towards the Targaryens and you have a recipe for future conflict even if an armstice was to be made after Jaehaerys I passes away.

It is highly unlikely that Rhaenys will let another Dragonrider marry into house Velaryon. It would make more sense to have Aegon marry Laena, thus acquiring a Velaryon rider from themselves and forcing Jace to keep his ambitions in Essos.
For Rhaenyra they will probably have her marry Daemon's son. Alternatively they could have her marry Dareon if he would take the Targ name. Can't think of any other prospective spouses for he though.

Nice chapter, I like the parallel between Jace, his parents and the older Targaryen against the younger generation of house Targaryen, Alicent and Rhaenyra from House of the Dragon, because just like Rhaenyra and Alicent, Corys, Viserra and her siblings understand that reconciliation is what best for their houses and their people, but the younger generation particularly Jace doesn’t understand that and his pride will lead to war if something isn’t done about it. Still some of his siblings are closer to the younger generation of House Targaryen than the children of the Blacks and Greens were, so hopefully a war won’t happen, but this wouldn’t be ASOIAF if everything go to plan. Now only the future can tell if Jace’s ambitions will lead to his house to greater success or it will ruin everything his parents had built.

The death of the old king. This will be something for westeros
People calling out the Velaryons for coming back forget a few things : this is their ancestral seat and house targaryen and velaryon are closely related ; being independant means throwing their allies to the wolves as they cant protect them against the targaryens ; by aligning themselves to the throne they gain a lot as well as resolving a potential explosive situation (dance) ; even though they conquered Tyrosh they still are Westerosi by culture, their life, friends and family is in Westeros.
Truth is they would have a lot to lose by declaring themselves independant, it will unite most of westeros against them and alienate them their allies while plunging them in a devastating war (no way the targaryens let them become a state that could compete with them after Viserra "stole" dragons from their house and gifted it to another house creating this rivalery and the king would have been well in his rights to break the match for this as he said to Aemon.)
Jace is being very shortsighted thinking house velaryon could do all of these things as it would incurr the wrath of a united Westeros (the lords would jump on the chance of humbling the Velaryons). Strenghening their ties to the targaryens is the right move as Jace and Rhaenyra's kids would be the first marriage partners to Aegon and Laena's kids. As Corlys said : Ambition is truely his house achille's heel.

Personally i have zero understanding why they care about westeros. They have a brighted, larger future in Tyrosh, one where they are free, and instead they choose to be shackled and insulted, beaten and threatened, forced to be debased and humiliated for the high crime of being successful and prosperous? No. Nothing about the return to Driftmark felt legitimate, and felt entirely like meta strongarming into inevitable conflict. It feels forced since every second of tension begs the question, why live there when you can live happily and without the constant damocles sword in tyrosh? where the plotting and scheming are blunted by distance?
