for High Tide (A Corlys Velaryon SI)

Gotta say story is a nice treat in a song of ice and fire series especially since it occurred during the era of what would be the dance of the dragons. House Velaryon has been slighted, nay worse betrayed. I fear that reconciliation is simply put impossible, by that i mean the return of the cordial relationship they once had. Now House Velaryon has every advantage to declare independence and forge their own Empire, they have their dragons, they have their institutions and systems which i say is definitely better than what Aegon the Conqueror enacted. Progressing away from feudalism to absolutist monarchy and also furthering the science in culture and arts. Now if the Velaryons would invent gunpowder then their road to independence is clear, gunpowder isn't that hard to make, it's ingredients are elemental sulfur, charcoal, and saltpeter (potassium nitrate) which is mixed to form gunpowder. Once they advanced the Pike and Shot with lines of Matchlock rifles then even dragons or at least their riders are more vulnerable to getting killed in a hail of bullets especially supported by friendly dragons.

In fact the numerical dragon superiority that the Targaryens had would be nullified by having artillery systems that aim upwards along with lines of matchlock. Dragons without their riders are like wild beasts, easier to kill. A reviewer had said that Velaryons had the advantage in technology, politics and economy, also their system of patronage which is more in line with how House Vi Britannia runes the newly reformed Holy Empire of Britannia from Code Geass, His Britannia. There isn't a real life example to compare with since absolutist monarchies still had nobility ruling fiefs. In that story after Lelouch took the throne to become the 99th Emperor of Britannia, he had just been betrayed by the very organization he creates the Black Knights and subsequently the UFN. So in order to consolidate power he did a purge called the night of the long knives, inspired by RL Hitlers purge of elements in the Nazi party. He consolidated all their wealth and tittles, redistributed to businessman and corporations and appointed military governors to rule the areas now reformed as Special Area Zone of the once previous areas.

In esense the new upper class are filled with businessman who hold corporations and military officials acting as governors. It's essentially the same with what Corlys did with his new system and creating a powerful royal army with muskets would ensure their power is consolidated properly. Now i get that reffering to CG is weird but seeing the word Gottwell reminds me a lot of Jeremiah Gottwald who is infamous for his absolute loyalty to his liege Emperor Lelouch. Naming Ser Jaremy Gottwell as knight of loyalty is quite fitting, just don't call him orange boy kay, that belongs to another knight. But i digress, the entire point is that the seven kingdoms are stagnating and only the Velaryons push forward. You should have Jacaerys research and invent gunpowder with his fathers note as a basis for this invention. Not only would this create a legacy that could match his father, it would also remove him from the shadow of his parents which would make him more stable and thus lift his burdens from his parents shadow.

Aside from that, i do not know how the story goes but i believe this reconciliation is as a reviewer said the calm before the storm. Since Jacaerys is ambitious, he would rather not take well the terms that the Targaryens had in their reconciliation and may seek to take the route of independence and forging their own Empire. It would be ironic, just like Corlys pushed Daemon to create innovations that would build house Velaryon to glory, Jaecerys could be the one to push his father towards independence. I don't know if Corlys had knowledge of Earth since he's an SI but if not then if the story proceeds this way, i suppose history rhymes. Jahaerys isn't popular with the citizens of the Velaryons, just one more slight like the Stepstone crisis then the Velaryons would be pushed to independence and they could economically embargo the Sevend Kingdoms or Six Kingdoms as the North and Velaryons may join to become one nation as kings of fire and winter.

House Stark might not only regain it's independence but would also become one with the Velaryons which would mean the North would become much like the Russian bear in that they'l grow and become strong to such a point that the other six kingdoms will have to worry about a Northern Blitzkrieg through the Riverlands and if you check the map, the North is actually half of the Seven Kingdoms so yeah, Russia. Not only is the war with Volantis and the Coalition of Bravoos inevitable, but once it happens lets just say the Velaryons would be good enough to reclaim whatever is left of them and reforge a new Valyrian Empire so the Neo Empire of Valyria, quite fitting whilst house Targaryen if pride continues would rot in the dust. House Velaryon is winning because they are riding the tides of change and those who oppose change are ones who are left in the dust in history.

So with this chapter, it seems that Queen Alysane is still alive, Jaehaerys will die first. Well it is interesting to see how things develop. I hope that it will lead to a more spectacular dance of the dragons.

Thank you Tertius for this, I can't wait for next week. I pray good health to you, so you can finish this story

Nice chapter! Looking forward to see what Viserra will say to her father in his death bed!

Noticed you didn't mention Daemon a lot...Why do i get the impression that he will be the idiot that will try his hardest to continue this "war" and even try to escalate it, just for his feeble pride? I mean, the whole conflict could easily end by marrying Leana to Aegon, tying both houses together...

Nice interlude, I can see the setup of a few future developments. It would seem that the Velaryons may get the royal match they desired soon, Daeron's close friendship with the future Aegon II is another interesting fact and finally Jacaerys, I have no doubt that it he who would be pivotal to how the future turns out. Ambition can take you far but it can also destroy.

buen capitulo.
Baelon esta vivo? no se supone que muere de apendicitis? o crees que fue envenenado por los maestres y por los acontecimientos con los velaryon no sucedio?

I am really thankful for this retelling before the storys next part. Though I have to say some of the epiphets are a bit much. They are normally given when someone does something amazing yet Corlys children all have one without doing anything remarkable. I would rather you included those by-names (if at all) only after they have done deeds worthy of them

I would hope for the kids to be agaisnt this enimosity, and befriend eachother, like family. I also think Gael and Daemon will make for a war, directly or indirectly, in the future. But who knows, I may be naive in this aspect. I know nothing.(jon snow)
