Yes, exactly-Esme probably isn't the only one who has triggers and bad days where she finds herself stuck in the past, all but unable to function on the present. And late 2020 is definitely a time for Carlisle to already be strained to the brink because of work. Definitely makes sense for that touch trigger to be over-sensitive.
And it's lovely how Esme is able to speak up and bring him back around to a different kind of intimacy and talk about what happened. Who knows how long it too her to be able to speak up at all like that, and their "always fresh" relationship also has the depth of experience and trust when they can do this after bungled sex or miscommunication or apologies gone wrong.
Thank you for this comforting little moment, where Esme's love is enough to bring Carlisle back out of himself :)

It's so intriguing to think about how various advances in technology have helped and/or hurt the Cullens' ability to play human over the years.
I've lost count of how many incarnations I've read of this 1911 meeting, and I love every single one. "Hard to climb a tree in a dress. Lord knows I've tried." :)
Esme IS dangerous, I suppose - - one of those people who really see you and wait to see what you're going to say, who look closely when others have moved on to the next sentence and looked away. It's funny to see him panic and scramble at such a mild "breach"... Boy, you have no idea how much more complicated your life is going to get over the next few decades! That threshold for emergency moves is going to go sky high compared to this!
And that he can be so shaken by a few questions about his family just shows how studiously he's kept it all buried and unexamined. We'll see about that, too!

oh my god, when i saw the notification i almost died.
These shots about them are the best I've read in a long time.
I loved this chapter, it's nice to see a more real dynamic in them.

I love how they are kind to each other through their pain. It also makes my heart ache for our non-vampire health care workers.
I am a bit confused by what happened, though. She did something to his arm and he couldn't "perform" anymore? Performance anxiety? I'm not sure.
Regardless, I still love this story and these headcanon moments of intimacy and history!

Tbh its been a loooong time since i read carlesme fics and idk why I just needed a bit of them today ¿. I found this fic and I'm so happy i read it bc it made my day. This, your writing, made me remember how much in love i was and still im with them. They have a beautiful but also tragic story, and I love to read that with this fic, seeing different aspects of their life and moments they shared, seeing their love growth. I loved this and I cant wait to keep reading the next chapters! They way you wrote their characters feels so deep and true to themselves, also, it gave me all the feels and melted my heart. Oh, the single A on the headstone broke my heart. I love the foreshadowing with the porter... isn't that what he wants, for no one to know him? No, he wants to be known by someone. It's interesting that the impetus for him changing Edward was his encounter with Esme. Lovely take on their first meeting.

I really liked this chapter. I got into it so much that I forgot it was a flashback and was startled at the end that Carlisle was at the station to get on a train, even though that's how it started! It pulled me in - a brief moment in time recalled, a simple question asked making a connection. Really well done!

And his journey to create a son began...Or did it? Seven years is a long time for him to be in one place. Maybe it was a stopover place? And that he initially feared the girl that would ten years later become his wife is awesome!
