I'm not sure that Ron was written too unrealistically in the series; he always struggled with self-confidence, and I think that was a big part of why he didn't expose his feelings for Hermione for so long. (It also probably took him a while to realize them himself.) I think he actually would've needed much more prodding from Harry to proclaim his feelings like this, especially doing it in the common room in front of everybody.
