Awh, that was beautiful. My eyes are wet. It was really good. It reminded me of the Nanny episode when Maxwell's deceased wife saw him getting ready to marry Fran...

This blew me away! I had to slow down my reading to savor each word. In my opinion, a ghost POV is a HARD scene to pull off, and you nailed it. Such maturity from Iola, who died so young, to learn to rejoice that her loved ones are moving on. Such regrets from Joe, to lose his girlfriend while he was flirting with another girl. And Frank comes in...that sweet, wordless hug...I really like this transition, how it starts with Joe and Iola's spirit, and then Joe leans on other humans instead-his brother, then Vanessa-which, ironically, relieves Iola of her burden so now she can move on. That poor pastor probably thought the brothers wouldn't live long enough to get married! And Joe commits before Frank does? A classy move to have Callie in the wedding, as she was Iola's bestie. "You will never walk alone," I suspect you got that from a song, this may be another songfic. Great respect to Joe, as we all have our favorite character/couple, yet we don't want to neglect the other characters as well. I'm thankful to start off my Thanksgiving with such a sweet, loving story!

reminiscent of The Lovely Bones, if you've ever read it. very sweet and good closure for both Iola and Joe.

I don't have many words, so no fashionable comments, but all I can say abt this is "awesome". one of my words of appreciation.

Ok, so now I'm crying. Iola's keys in his pocket and Frank just holding him in quiet understanding. Bittersweet and beautiful. Thank you.
It's always those secret thoughts that make it so meaningful. On my own wedding day my Dad and I shared one. My Mom had died young and my Dad had remarried, the proverbial stepmother. She had tried to erase the history before her. As my Grandmother put it, "I never saw anyone so jealous of a dead woman." My husband and I were married in an old Inn, the wedding out back and the reception inside. Just before walking down the aisle, my Dad and I had a moment alone. In decorating the hall that morning I had placed three black and white photographs in old fashioned frames on a sideboard: My Mother (who died when I was 13), my maternal Great Aunt (who had stepped in as surrogate to help raise her own sister's children/grandchildren when she too died young), and my paternal Grandmother (who had lived with us growing up). To the untrained eye they just looked like part of the décor. I led my Dad to the pictures, then I took three yellow roses form my bouquet and placed one in front of each photograph. It was our secret. No one knew except he and I: not my jealous stepmother, not even my fiancé-soon-to-be-husband. If any of the older relatives recognized the faces during the reception they kept silent. Those three strong women, without whom I would never have made it to that day, were very much there. And they were smiling. Just like Iola.

Beautifully done. We ( in general ) have always wondered if our loved ones ( in spirit ) were watching over us at their funerals and I think they were.
