This was beautiful! I love that while Arnold's words made Helga feel better, they didn't magically solve her problems. I like that you kept it realistic.

Everything you touch is gold. I love this from start to finish. We believe Helga’s perspective at the beginning, since she feels so matter-of-factly about her appearance. When Arnold enters the picture and tells her she’s pretty, her reaction is so sad, but accurate in a way that a real person would react. And we start to get conflicted POV’s based on the way Arnold sees her, which is both sweet and enlightening. My favorite part to read. And then, we see growth on Helga’s part, working on how she sees herself, and who doesn’t love a happy ending like that?

At the beginning, I found that this paragraph («The Pataki household is as cutthroat as the deep-sea, and her parents are sharks who grow hungry at the smell of blood in the water. The earliest lesson she learned was to never let herself bleed. Not if she didn't want them to start circling 'round her. So she fashioned herself into a shark, too») was such a perfect portrait, so poetic and profound, and really caught my attention; and then, the whole chapter just turned out to be captivating.
It should have been a one-shot on its own.
