Damn, didn't realize the story had been completed until now. Seemed odd that I hadn't seen an update from this story. Now I know why.
A nice end to this story. Best way I could put it. Not the best I've seen you do but, truthfully, it seems difficult to top your previous endings to the conflict without repeating them in some fashion. At least not while stil being faithful to the mechanics shown to us in the series proper.
The idea of using the tree itself, the Blacksmith, and Ascending as a means to "end" Salem and Ozpin will always be narrative genious, in my opinion. The idea of it being Jaine, the "Rusted Knight", a fellow fairy tale character, and likely the last and most recent one to fulfill their role in their story, even moreso fitting.
Idk, it just feels right. I never get tired of reading it.
Stuff like this is what makes it seem the Jaune is the main character of RWBY sometimes. His MC energy is off the charts. I don't care if that triggers anyone xD. If the shoe fits.
Besides that, I do feel like certain threads were left untied. What became of team RWBY, PRNP (sans Pyrrha), O(zma)scar, etc. after the end? Sure, none of that is of vital importance, but it'd have been nice to get one last check in with them.
Finally, I usually agree with limiting author's notes as much as possible. My personal view being that FF doesn't lend itself to separate author's notes word count from the actual story, thus it inflates the story's word count. However! Barsev, given you rarely ever make use of it, I think you've more than deserve to add it in. It let's us get to know you, the author, a bit more.
By gosh, some authors take to answering reviews in an author's notes each chapter.
So, yes. I think it was alright to do so, barsev. Even more in the finale. Some final thoughts from the author at the end of a story they write is valuable.

Well... I really loved this story, it was much better than I thought it would be, seeing the 'other side' of the fight against Salem was dramatically refreshing, and the final solution deliciously bittersweet, thanks to the author for this wonder.

Marvelous work.
There were parts that felt kind of rushed and 'empty' for lack of a better term. Like you were writing to fill space then of anything of significance.
"Better to be a warrior in a garden then a gardener in a war." This work feels like it embodies this line of wisdom. I imagine if wasn't familiar with it, I'd have long ago dropped off this fic given it comes across as 'secret op Jaune give up' but having understanded it stuck with it.
Interesting it's helped me come to understand it further. To know how 'To understand the Art of Peace in addition to the Art of War." Soldiers are not meant to fight forever. To have something they can do afterwards when not fighting and not related to fighting. To take up an 'Art of Peace' in a time of peace.
And of course, the Arkos in me is thrilled with the ending. Pyrrha getting to learn the lesson at the hands of Jaune.
As much as I'd love to help you tighten up on the 'empty spaces' I legitimately don't know what advice to give. You made them work for you. Perhaps it doesn't need fixing.

I don't see it. You made this version of Jaune into a character that has to deal with the consequences of his own in-action. Unfortunately, he keeps making the same damn mistakes over and over again which has two major points arise from it.
It makes him either seem like a naive idiot or a broken character for a stupid plot choice. Him not ending these threats permanently is fucking absurd in either his mindset or the character writing itself. Honestly, its to the point now where he can directly take the blame on letting his enemies go free and keep breathing to just kill maim and burn other people.
Absolutely fucking ridiculous. When it once again blows up and gets the people arpund him killed he deserves it.
