o_o I most certainly prefered the first chapter. This chapter seemed too... perfect? You would assume that Harry/Ginny/Hermione would be less accepting that Ron was back (after twelve years of non-existance). But, the first chapter was a good cliff-hanger and you kept the characters in character for most of the chapter.
A beta (reader) is a person who looks over your chapter before you post it to check for grammatical/spelling errors. They also give you feedback on how they like or dislike the chapter and what aspects you might want to think about changing.
