I like this - a completely independent story, with interesting characters - though I must say I'd like to know what timeframe this is. The story has a few typos (eg. ' "Yes, sir. " came a distant reply' should be 'sir," came a distant reply.') but the flow of the story is smooth and the characters likeable. I'd like to see what you do with this!
