An impressively vivid story; I wish I could write so well. I think this is one very plausible outcome of the canon ending (there are other "less dark" outcomes as well depending on how deep you think Jesse's connection to Leslie was... the book seemed to suggest Jesse eventually moved on and got over her, but at his age, a wide range of positive or negative outcomes are possible. Regardless of that range, I still imagine Jesse being a lifelong bachelor on the grounds that Leslie was his designated soulmate regardless of whether he gets over her or not)
It looks like in this story you've favored the "more depressed" interpretation where Jesse really never found much more to live for. Perhaps it is a bitter irony that his country stood to benefit from his unhappiness, and that when we read this story, we feel glad that Jesse is finally free of his lonely and depressed existence on Earth. You've moved us, and made us think - all to your credit as a story writer.
Any chance of a continuation (or sequel) for this story, showing Jesse's much happier afterlife in the sky with Leslie? :)

Awesome and excellent! I don't know if a better post-ending could have been written. I actually though as I watched the movie that Jesse would end up killing himself although you added the military bit to it. Again, great one-shot.

What's so unhappy about this one?Of course it's sad he died but givent he state he was in, it's not too bad. But that ending was pretty happy in my opinon.

Wow! That was such a sweet ending. I wouldn't be surprised if you were Bush, that speech is exactly like his speeches. Amazing detail!

I loved this story, I want to thank MadTom for helping to inspire me, and help speed up the writing process of my first chapter which should be out soon. This story though dark was so well writen it had me hanging onto every word. The ending was wonderful and (I hate to say this) but it was sweet, and just how I would imagine them finding eachother in the end. Pease I'm begging you please keep up the great work and post more of these awesome stories.

I really enjoyed this story. It's very well written, uses an effective structure, and has an interesting take on Jess's later life, and shows how much impact Leslie had on him (and Janice), and by proxy on those around him. Nicely done.
The only bit of criticism I would offer up is probably more just a case of personal preference. I would have liked the ending scene better without the romantic overtones, with most of the dialog and the kiss removed from the story. In fact, I would have probably made them 11 years old again, as when he had last seen her. But, of course, it's your fic. Like I said, purely a personal preference, and it doesn't detract from the rest of the story.
Excellent work. One of the better Bridge to Terabithia fanfics I have read. I hope to see more from you.

Well, a bit difficult to comment on this...
As a psychologist, you'll know much better than me how plausible this sustained death-wish might be. Somehow I feel it doesn't really go with the end of the book/movie: May Belle helps him to get over his feeling of guilt, doesn't she? So why the death-wish that remains for some eight or nine years? I very much like Janice's description - there's another person that Leslie redeemed. And the end is sweet enough to make up for the darkness of the beginning - the title of this fic is well chosen. (Not everybody will probably understand what the "seventy-two of us" is supposed to be all about.) Sergeant Caulfield's first name cannot be Holden, much as I'd love it to be - he will be far too old by now.
What I find a bit hard to swallow is your attitude towards war in general and this special war in particular. By linking it to CSL's book you indicate it is a JUST war, even the terminal fight of good vs evil, which, I'm sorry, it is clerly not, IMHO.

this was just brilliant, i was almost crying at the end! You're a great writer, this was very dark but I could see it happening and I'm so glad he got to be with Lelsie at the end!
