I don’t quite know what you think “maul" means, but I'm pretty sure it doesn't. It is a verb meaning "to viciously and messily damage," or else as a noun, it is the name of a clumsy mediaeval weapon used to maul people. You might have been thinking of "maw", which is a noun meaning "a gaping, toothy mouth," but that doesn't work for all the ways you want to use it either.
