Good chapter. I like how your portraying each character. M...John. Sadly he's a tough one. He's always been the more shy and distant one, especially in the tv series. I would suggest bring something out of John no one would expect. You could have him talk about how much he misses his family especially Alan. After all, they do have a lot in common. They both love the stars. I think the best thing for John is that hes a thinker. John thinks a lot. Lol. I'm sure he thinks about what ifs and such. If things could be different he could change them. That's how I see this John. Does that help?
Update soon! I understand life can be crazy, i'm going through the same thing.

This is great!
I love the way you have a distinctive voice for each character and give the background details that amplify their comments. Personally, I've always thought Lady P had a bit of a hidden passion for Alan - only she kept it well hidden because he was so much younger than her! But your chapter makes perfect sense and has led me to look at things in a different way.
There seems to be a lot of division with people either "for" or "against" the character of Alan - and I adore your very apt comment that he is like Marmite - great fun as well as being true!
I look forward to reading the other viewpoints. The TV John seems emotionally the most distant of all the family - but then Gerry disliked the character so much he virtually marooned him on TB5, with little chance for interaction! Wow, this is really great so far. I can't believe I hadn't read this, it's awesome!
Lady Penelope is absolutely horrible in this fic, but I actually wuite like the way you have portrayed her. You've gone for the rich snob, and you've done it really well. I actually wanted to slap her at the end of the chapter, and I'm a pacifist! But, if you look closely at her in the TV series, I suppose ou could interpret her actions as being somewhat of a 'show' for Jeff. And the idea that all Penny is searching for is his affection really worked in the context of this story.
Poor Brains. Yes, Jeff always did try and treat him equally, but the blood bond between father and son is far stronger than it will ever be with Jeff and Brains. It's understandable why he envies Alan's relatioship with the Tracy patriarch.

OK. Just like Lady P, that was a twist some people would never see coming. The unspoken envy of Alan's place in the Tracy family would be normal. Brains - in the show - was treated as a favorite nephew, a well-loved cousin. But never a son, never a brother. Alan - and I like the fact that his brilliance was acknowledge by Brains, after all how could he have accomplished so much at such a young age: college grad, NASA, race car driver, if he wasn't? - is so important to his family.
I know you are planning on doing Grandma next. I hope she shows a touch of resentment to Jeff. After all, for much of Alan's childhood Grandma was the primary caretaker, not Jeff. Yet everyone at the hospital is probably worrying about Jeff, concerned over how he is feeling. And when you do Jeff - if you do Jeff - I would love to see him reveal his guilt for missed so much of Alan's growing up time.
John? Huh. Maybe he could discuss how much they have in common, yet everyone only seems to notice their differences. Alan may come across as cocky and confident while his brother seems more reserved but in many ways that is a front. One that it seemed that John could always see past.

Well, your fic is entitled 'Bitterness' after all. I think if Lady P is really this nasty, maybe Alan isn't the only reason Jeff keeps her at a distance.
