Okay, so recently I've been really addicted to reading stories about Nam. I like this, and I'm glad you've decided to write it. It was very good. Well done.

Oh jeez. Either I'm a whimp or that was a really well written story. Fantastically, horribly-sad... I liked it...

its a sad chapter. does soda really die in the later books? i hope not...

"At the end of the world...

What's the last thing I see?

Well, I'm never coming home,

Never coming home...

Should I? Could I?

And all the things that you never, ever told me...

And all the ghosts that are never gonna catch me...

For all the wounds that are ever gonna scar me!

And all the smiles that are ever gonna haunt me!"

I loved this. It was powerful and beautiful in that way only a war story can be. You handle Vietnam flawlessly. Thank you for posting this. :)

Peace,

What a moving and sad sad SAD story. I really felt like I was there beside Steve...great attention to detail. Is this a one shot? Pls say no! You write too well to let it end.

I loved this. That's saying a lot, considering I'm pretty anti-Soda dying. But I find the Vietnam War such an interesting topic, that I can't seem to stay away from its stories.

Moving on, I liked how you wrote Steve and Soda as opposites, but balancing out in the end. Kind of like ying and yang.

I think it's plausible that Steve would tend to blame things on God and Soda would be the one who sees it being more of a problem with people, with humanity. He's described as being happy-go-lucky and blaming the world's problems on a higher power just doesn't seem his style. So I really liked that aspect.

I like how this begins with the injury already taking place, it opens it for interpretation and really sets the mood for the rest of the story. The fact that Steve knows the end is coming, but tries to convince Soda and himself it's not was a great touch. Soda calmly accepting that this was his end really added to the emotion as well.

This was an incredibly written piece.

You did a great job!

Hmm. That's a cool idea, Steve and Soda being like two halves of a whole. I like the line "had the better lungs" - maybe if Steve didn't smoke so much, he'd have a decent pair too lol. I wonder where the God theme would go, if you were to continue this (I know it's a one-shot). I think you do a good job of showing how Steve is loyal to a fault.

The last sentence has a typo - it should read "... with my best friend's rifle," not "best friends rifle." Otherwise, it looks clean with respect to proofing.

I can't pretend I wouldn't have liked to know what exactly happened to Soda, but I guess that's not the focus of the story. Nice job!

You know, I don't usually like stories with Soda dying (I guess I'm still in denial about that), but this one was really good. It was so sad, but I loved the way you make light of just what opposites Steve and Soda are. I also liked the line "Don’t you dare take him too, God...", because it shows that Soda's right - Steve does blame God for everything. Also, the line "Because Sodapop Curtis didn't have the chance" was great because to me it shows that Steve does react with hate to everything, and Soda wouldn't. He'd prefer to stay with Steve until he died... or maybe that's just my interpretation. I loved it, all the same.

Really well done.

No, Sarah, no. This isn't bad at all.

I loved how you compared Soda and Steve.

The way Steve said, "He always had faith, while I always lacked it. He always had love, while I felt hate. He always had a way of understanding, when all I had was anger..."

That's really how they are- I mean, really. They're like total opposites in some ways, while in others they're so much a like.

Otherwise, everything else was great.
