Personally, I think it is cruel to Edward to make him survive Bella's "death" because that means, as her husband, he'd be expected to have to face Charlie and Renee as well as attend funeral services. He is a mind-reader which means he'd be hearing exactly how devastated they are. As a parent myself, it would actually be more comforting to me to believe my daughter went on to whatever awaits us after death at the side of her true love.
