Interesting fic. A notable counter argument to the priest's choices of either celibacy and fulltime superman or marriage and no more superman would of course be parttime supermanfed in the comics where he did eventually marry, superman can do that because there are other superheroes. He CAN take a day off and let Wonderwoman or the Martian Manhunter take care of the villains.

That is one of the best-articulated statements on marriage I have read. Very well done!

Wow, so according to this, no one with a full time job should have a relationship. Awesome.

Thank you so much for writing this. This fic holds the truth of vocation and sacrifice for love. It shows why Superman cannot have a working relationship with Lois. I have so much praise for this short masterpiece but above all thank you for sharing it with me and all Superman fanfic readers. :)

Beautiful. Simply beautiful. You have given an entirely new perspective of Superman's character and motivations and I think it is fantastic. I love the way you have incorporated Christianity in such a positive light as well, it really gives the story a lot of depth.

I really like it, it does a great job of presenting a possibility that superman could have faced since he devotes himself to the world and this story helps to make him seem more human and less of a perfect superhero. I think you did a great job of showing his insecurities and creating a personal story for superman instead of a generic comic story.

As someone who strongly holds the belief that the Catholic Church is nothing but a sanctimonious brain washing cult (but that is just my opinion) I have to disagree with how Superman/Clark Kent was portrayed in this fic.
While an interesting concept, I don't understand why a RC Priest would encourage a life of celibacy because it was his personal choice, when other religions clergy, firemen, policemen etc are married with families.
There are many ways a person can complete their lifes 'vocation' without sacrificing their life and love.

This is a very nice story, but I feel that your Father Mike, while making Kal El feel better, did Superman a great disservice.
Superman is not a priest, he is instead a First Responder, the ultimate police officer/EMT. There is, in truth, no need for him to be celibate.
The comics themselves show that there IS a middle path between devoting ones entire self to the "never ending battle for Truth, Justice, and the American Way", and the life he yearns for.
Remember, "Clark Kent" (at least, the one who goes to work at the Daily Planet) is just as much a disguise as the tights and cape are, the *real* Clark Kent is the one we saw in the Smallville sequences of Superman the Movie and Superman Returns.

Very beautiful piece. Interesting way you described Clark's inner struggle. You really feel the agony of his feelings.
It would be interesting to see how the Priest handles Clark though. Superman, Kal-El, and Clark Kent.

This was an interesting perspective, and well-written. However, I must respectfully disagree with the thesis - that Superman is like some kind of Roman Catholic priest who cannot balance public duty with a personal life. Life requires balance, and a duty that includes delving into what would certainly bring into view the most depraved, horrific nature of man would especially need the grounding effect of the unconditional love and support of loved ones.
Having said that, I respect your right to articulate your vision of Superman, and encourage you to continue as inspirations strikes you in the future.

I'm so sad this fic ended. But, I disagree with Superman's choice. I absolutely believe that he would be able to have both. There are many vocations like fire-fighters, policeman, doctors, and many more who are fully capable of having a spouse while successfully doing their jobs. Despite my disagreement, it was still a great fic, though!

It's always great to see something so delightfully Catholic around here, since fics like this happen so seldom. I think you really hit the nail on the head about Superman's vocation. I had never really thought about it that way before, but it makes sense. I myself have a vocation to celibacy and I think this fic has given me a greater understanding of it. Thanks.

I'm sorry. This is great writing, but both Clark and the priest missed an important point about vocations. Non-RC ministers certainly have both vocation and family, as do doctors, police and fire-fighters. It's hard but it's doable.
It seems to me that Clark is doing what he always does, making decisions for Lois's happiness without taking into account what Lois may want. Yes, it would be a hard road for both of them, but it's a road they need to plan together, not him deciding he knows what's best.

The priest has a point. Of course, being a priest and being a superhero is different. But we know what happens to girlfriends and wives of supers. It's rarely "and they lived happily forever after".
