Haha, Briar unconsciously making his life harder. It happens to us all, just... not usually so strangely. But yeah. I have always wondered about Briar's life before he became Briar, more than just the little glimpse Tammy gives us in her books, so thank you for putting this up! : )

Amazing! I really enjoyed this.
I was a tiny bit confused at the beginning- it didn't seem clear to me that they were hitting different houses, and that they had managed to get into the house and rob it before the plants went crazy.
Even though that was a bit unclear, I still loved the beginning and after that bit I really got into the story. I think you really managed to capture Briar- so good job!

Oh, this was lovely-you capture Briar's mental voice so perfectly and the way you recreate the thief world is convincing. Briar and plant magic always struck me as the most interesting and you really capture that here, the way you describe his fear, his elation, his dread and a sort of willful blindness to keep what he already suspects at bay. Much enjoyed.
Just a couple of grammar mistakes/typos (I figured you'd care since for the most part your fic is so carefully proofread):
"about halfway [THROUGH] the new hole"
"a kind of roses" should probably be singular- "rose"

Aw...I love Briar. Him and Tris are my favorite in the Tortall-verse. I think you captured him perfectly. It's just like Briar. "Roach didn't know much about mages, but he did know they were expensive, and he *doubted they'd waste any of their precious magic on gardening*." Bwahahaha! That made me smile. Nice touch of irony there. (It *is* irony, right? lol)Anyway, overall, it was great. More would be great. You seem to have a good style for maybe writing more early Briar stories? :-) I'd certainly read them!
