I'm reading through the Christmas stories and just had to tell you that I really liked this one. I wonder about Mark's mother. I like the description at the end, with the angel. Thank you for sharing this.

I like the way this ended. Not what I expected. I actually expected Hardcastle to pay off the rest of the monument and get it set up by Christmas for Mark. But I guess that would be the "predictable" ending, wouldn't it? Not the creative one.

This is a wonderful addition to the holiday challenge! Such a nice story to tie-in with Mark's past, and his commitment to the promise he made is so like him. Hardcastle's simple support was just the right touch.
This was like a warm cup of cheer-thanks!

Oh, man, I just loved this! A perfect combination of a tear jerker without being too sappy (that's very hard to do!)
I, too, am glad the Judge knew not to try to step in and pay for it. This was definitely Mark's journey. It wasn't a "duty" to Mark, but a deeper commitment-his promise. That's what Mark is all about.
And the picture you painted in the cemetary at the end? Yeah, well, just perfect.
THANKS for the beautiful story!

I love this story. It sounds like something Mark would really do and I like the fact that you didn't have the judge offer to pay for it. Something like that, Mark needs to do on his own. I'll be looking for more of your stories.

What a wonderful Holiday story.
Yea I can understand about Mark wanting to keep is promise and to fullfill the last promise towards his mother he had promised to do.
What a holiday story of love and caring.
Just wonderfully written.
I am sure everyone who reads this will be able to picture everything going on in the story. The expressions on their faces and everything.

A very nice addition to the list of stories from our Christmas challenge. The bit about Frank and his misconception made me smile, and I liked how you brought in the orange from a couple of the episodes themselves. That's a great touch, as was the "borrowed" angel. Very Christmassy in tone; thanks for sharing a quiet view of the guys' holiday.

Very nicely done, with hints at the outset that are properly obscure, and good grip on "later-early" with things settling down but not yet fully explored. Both characters are in fine fettle. Hardcastle is curious and maybe a little concerned, while Mark's story is sober without being maudlin.
It's a lovely addition to the holiday lineup.
