Personally, I think Gaara had the worse childhood out of everyone! Perhaps Naruto also was considered an outcast, but even as a kid, there was an episode that showed that he'd become friends with Shikamaru, Choji, and Kiba. And Sasuke might have lost everyone, but he still at least had his fangirls! XD! Poor Gaara had no one, as your story said. This was really touching and the episode that you based this from broke my heart as well!
P.S. I too have started my first Naruto story. Gaara is the main character with Naruto and Sasuke as slightly background characters (with some of the Akatsuki members as well...). It's called Journey to the Land of the Leaf, check it out if you'd like!
