brilliant, and very cute. loved this! great idea for the key, and I like how it's not a lock-it-in-the-room and forget about it vs. full blown relationship choice. it's very in-character. and gives them something to hope for.
now, I don't know if you're still writing fic, but I think it's about time those keys be put to use? pretty please?
