I like this interpretation of the smoke monster, as a demi-god who got trapped on the Island, and who once there, attempted to re-create his semi-divine existence (including siring heroes on Island women.)
From the first watching of the Pilot, I've always personally interpreted LOST as a mythic story; the major characters representing archetypes turned loose in an enchanted landscape, struggling with a larger-than-life cast of gods, demons, and heroes/heroines.
Including, of course, the very first appearance of Smokey.
So this story captured that mood nicely, I thought, right down to the brain-busting very last sentence.

I love how this reads like a fairytale or mythological legend - it's a style that fits Esau and Jacob well, because they *are* sort of mythological beings. The short, fragmented sentences and the lack of dialog might feel strange in another story, and at first made me a little skeptical, but once I began to read it felt like I was reading an ancient story that was being passed down, especially the last few paragraphs. Once again, the atmosphere is so wonderfully mysterious and I enjoyed it a lot.
