I love this. I know that this hasn't been updated for several years now, but I love this, seeing Guy's early courtship attempts of Marian. I love all of the details, like the first time that Marian uses Guy's feelings for her to get something, and Marian not wanting to be married or to have kids, and her and her father hiding food in their napkins to give to hungry children. It's so in-character and I love it. :)

I just wonder why people who like Guy/Marian fictions bash Robin and make him out-of-character.

It's very interesting!
I wish you'd kept on writing this story...

Poor Marian,
Guy is a creep, I don't care if he may be good looking and powerful, as well as rich.
He only wants her because she is beautiful.
I admire her willingness to dress down to avoid attracting him but she may have to go to more drastic measures, starting with her hair, and perhaps mutilating her face if that does not work.
Please don't let Gertude fade out of the story forever. I want her to have a role somewhere along the line. She appeals to me and a loyal servant is an asset not easily replaced.
Good on her for retrieving her Father's ring. I hope they don't miss it with all the other jewels which I am sure are of far greater financial worth.
I wish there were some other fellow who could come and rescue her from the clutches of Lascivious creeps.
Perhaps she should become a nun...
I hope you carry on with this story. You write it very well.
I liked the way you did the Sheriff's speech:
"Lords and Ladies," began Vaisey in a loud voice, "Thank you very much for attending at such short notice this evening. Your presence is most appreciated – la-di-da-di-da, etcetera, etcetera." He smacked his hand loudly on the table before him. "Now, let's get down to business..."

As a very hate-able villain I like him immensely.

This is good Raenad,
Very good. I wish I had put you on author alert earlier.
I do not believe I have seen the BBC version of RH. It is not the one with Kevin someone as Robin is it?
I like the way you use Marian's thoughts to explain the plight of women in this period of history. She is depicted as a strong minded woman trapped in a cage of her society. All she can do in that cage is peck anyone who comes near her, and despair as she sees one after another of her friends taken out to become some man's dinner.
"She was certainly every bit the head-strong, opinionated woman that they all knew her to be. She saw it as her only freedom. She was continually forced into this prison of a home, into the Lady that she had been trained to be, yet she longed for true freedom."
I like it that she is thinking this about herself. She knows that her defiance is a burden to her Father, and will probably get her in trouble, but she has no other option than submission to a Father she does not trust. I would not be like her in such a situation, but I totally empathise with her feelings.

I must say her description of Robin really puts me off him. Was he that much of a womaniser in the BBC version? I don't think I want to watch it in that case. I think I will stick to the Disney Version with the foxes! I know the romance will probably have him return with eyes for her alone, but with that much promiscuity in his history, I am sure his appetite for variety will revive once she is a decade older and worn out by little ones to care for.

Thank you for including the information from Blood Brothers that Gisborne had been in Nottingham as a boy.

Oops, just wanted to say that the review of chapter 1 starting with "I've been meaning to comment on this story both on the guyxmarian list and here..." is mine. I didn't realize fanfiction.net had logged me out.

Again, VERY well-written. I especially like Vaisey here, and his unorthodox methods of tax collection (as well as Marian's reaction and her clever subterfuge of withholding the ring).

But yet again I have some quibbles regarding canon consistency. First of all, Guy is not "given rights to Locksley" until Robin returns, he is simply managing the estate (and it's quite clear in 1x01 that he does respect property rights). Secondly, again if you're going with canon, it's pretty clear in early Season 1 that Guy has never before been Marian's official suitor. It's only in 1x06 that he mentions marriage, and Marian can plausibly pretend that she has no idea why he'd object to her going into a convent. Of course you could make this a complete AU, which would take care of the canon problem. However, I also think that while Guy is in fact aggressive in his pursuit of Marian in S1, it's not like him to court a woman who is betrothed by someone else. For all his faults, Guy does have his code of honor and fair play (he unquestioningly surrenders Locksley to Robin until Robin is outlawed), and I think he'd show the same attitude toward "someone else's woman."

Also, the idea that a woman could be executed or accused of being a witch simply for refusing a man's marriage proposal is a bit extreme. I know that Meg in 3x09 is brought before the Sheriff for refusing her suitors, but it's more a matter of her chronic insubordination to her father (and stealing money from him to pay off one of her suitors to go away).

Again, I'm sorry about all this nitpicking. I really don't want to discourage you from writing; on the contrary, the reason I'm posting this review is that I believe you are gifted and can do much better.

I've been meaning to comment on this story both on the guyxmarian list and here. You have a really good writing style and a good ear for dialog, and I really like some of the vivid metaphors you use, especially this: "She heard the front door close soundly, the last nail being closed in the coffin that was their dignity." I am always up for a well-written Guy/Marian story. However, I have a few quibbles, some very minor and some fairly serious.

Serious matters first. Some aspects of your backstory for Marian simply do not match the show's canon (and I assume that you mean this to be a canon-consistent story since you refer to it as "Pre-Season One"). For instance, Marian being the product of a loveless marriage in which the woman is treated as no more than a possession and a baby-maker really doesn't go with what we hear about her parents' marriage (in 2x06, when Winchester accuses Sir Edward of having "stolen his woman," Sir Edward replies, "Kate chose me!"), or with the character of Sir Edward as we see him on the show. Also, the idea that Marian's betrothal to Robin was something arranged by her father and that she dreads his return because it would mean the end of her freedom doesn't really fit the Robin/Marian relationship we saw on the show, in several ways. First of all, even as a Guy/Marian shipper, I think she clearly cared about Robin (though personally I see their relationship as friends more than lovers). Also, it is pretty clear that (1) Marian is extremely angry at Robin for leaving (it really comes through in the first several episodes of S1), and (2) their betrothal ends when he leaves and she does not, at this point, expect to marry him. Apart from being inaccurate, I always find it a bit disappointing when Guy/Marian fics try to bash Robin or negate Robin/Marian. First of all, I don't like the bashing of rival pairings, period. Secondly, it makes it look like the only way the G/M ship can prevail is by denying the canon of Marian's relationship with Robin. In fact, it isn't; Marian's complicated feelings for Guy are definitely a part of canon, too, and I think there are circumstances in which Marian could have chosen Guy even though she definitely cares for Robin.

Also, minor quibbles. Guy is never called "Sir Gisborne" or "Lord Gisborne" on the show, it's always "Sir Guy." And Marian could not possibly remember him as a boy; she would have been a baby at the time.

Sorry to be so critical! I would not have bothered to review and quibble if I did not think you had really good potential as a writer. I really hope you will not be offended by my comments, and I'd love to see you write more.

I enjoyed this chappy. Especially the humor you inserted n various parts. I kept snickering thinking back to those segments. Hopefully you will continue to add humor to future chapters.

Ooooh, nicely done! I love the way you describe them both; you got the 'feeling' of them very nicely. :-) I especially like how Marian dressed unattractively, and then used her loveliness to distract him from noticing that she kept back her father's ring. That line "When he finally looked away she felt as though she had lost a small piece of her soul", was a stroke of brilliance; you got across in one sentence what the series never managed to - the natural effect of deceit on someone like Marian.

Thanks for the update; I look forwards to more when you have time. :-)

this is so beautifully written!

This chapter was even better than the first. And I love the way you portrait Guy from Marian's POW. Keep up the great work!

I really enjoy this! Please continue. It makes me very happy. You do the voice of Marian very well, one of the best I've read. You have a knack for making her strong but still vulnerable. Very wonderful.
