I've read a story like this before only it was called The Lemon Princess. Instead of oranges it was lemons and the maidens wanted water instead bread. They wanted water because they were thirsty from the lemon and then when denied they withered away. The story was from India (or Arabic, I think). Anyway a passing peasant girl saw the maiden siting naked in the lemon tree and offered to keep her company in waiting and started brushing her hair until she found the hairpin talisman that kept the princess human and pulled it out, turning her into a dove. The prince came back and found the peasant girl instead of his lemon princess and asked what happened to her. The girl said that the sun had burned her and that she would be fine after 2 months of pampering and treatment. The prince agreed and took her home. The dove came to the palace and asked the passing servant, who happened to be the princes old nursemaid. The dove asked about the prince and somehow changed back to hymn and lived with the nursemaid cleaning and cooking and such. After 2 months the peasant girl still didn't look any better but the prince had promised to marry her after the 2 months and so preparations were started. The lemon princess heard about the wedding and started to make the most beautiful decorative carpet put of gold and silver thread and had the nursemaid give it to the prince as a wedding present with the instructions not to open it till it was given to the prince. The prince was quite taken with what he could see of the rug and quickly unrolled it and out rolled the lemon princess. The prince recognized her at once and asked about her story, dishes told him all about how the peasant girl tricked her to how the nursemaid had taken her in. The prince had the peasant hit exiled as punishment and married his lemon princess. They had 3 handsome sons and 3 beautiful daughters and lived long mostly happy lives together. The end. When I read this story I was reminded of The Lemon Princess, so thank you. Also, good job, I enjoyed it!
