A surprise BTH update! It’s a miracle! My Christmas has been made by all the gorgeous snamione hurt/comfort; What an incredible chapter!
- I feel like the only reason Severus didn’t absolutely lose it with Minerva was because he was so distracted by the idea of hurting Hermione to remember how much he hates vulnerability.
- With how much it’s been teased, I do wonder if we will get to see Severus having to choose between the Order and Hermione (pick her pls) and/or utterly loosing control.
- “Fine. If you come up with an idea, I will at least entertain it." Curious to see what comes of this.
- "I didn't say anything." - Well, that says more than enough, doesn't it?" Queen Minerva is always right.
- “If I'm not careful, you will pay the price.” Make her pay the price! The potential angst!
- I expect Voldie’s suspicion wasn’t from any one thing, but instead a combination of Severus’ habit of finding excuses for why she can’t come to summonings/ why letting her make her own decisions/ tenderness with her, combined with all the little physical tells when they’re together in person. Which is why I am also afraid that his suspicion perhaps won’t lessen quite yet.
- You resolved the ‘I love you’ question so, so wonderfully. I’ve been wondering a lot over the past 12 months how on Earth you could resolve it - but it was absolutely brilliant. An outright admission of love might have felt rushed and (somehow) too easy, but Minerva is right - if he rejected her, it would have utterly destroyed Hermione and, in turn, himself. This is the perfect compromise, so tender and full of hope but still with that bittersweet feel and a touch of awkwardness - because it will never be simple with these two. However, it is clear he is trying to be more vulnerable, which is such a big deal for him. I love that it’s so clear through his actions that he does adore her - the way it’s maybe implied in his conversation with Minerva that he only rebuffed her to protect her, how he agreed to spend time with Narcissa (yuck) to make her feel safer, how he was so affectionate with her …. his heart knows, even if his brain doesn’t. And the ’not think it impossible’ - you’re killing us here.
- (As a side note, the tone and pacing in this chapter in general felt even more perfect than usual, if that makes sense?)
- He was crying in front of her? That’s so so huge for him. I wish FFN supported emojis, because I want to insert about 10 sobbing faces here.
- "You are more than I could ever deserve.” SCREAMING
- I love that they were together in Hermione’s room - it feels symbolic of this new stage in their relationship, But then the way they need to go back to his quarters to keep their cover is so reflective of the obligations that complicate everything.
- Adore Poppy and Minerva ganging up on Severus. The banter is brilliant, as always.
- Poor Tonks is going to go stir-crazy. This is a complete shot in the dark, but I was wondering whether she’ll end up interacting with Draco at any point?
- "Riddle wouldn't bat an eye before sacrificing you… except he'd probably make Severus do it” Screaming again. I have been wondering about the possibility of Severus being forced to punish her, it’s not likely he’d be able to navigate that safely - and there’s no chance he’d kill her, right?. Is this what he means when he says he could bring down the Order?
- The mention of Narcissa being a test makes me think Voldie has been suspicious about Severus’ affections for a lot longer than they think.
- "Remind me to ask Severus to look at your potions.” LMAO. As always, Tonks is gold.
- The detail about Hermione constantly gripping her wand right now! Sobs! Poor girl is so broken.
- The fact Severus, master spy, didn’t realise he should make the effort to be seen with Narcissa … it speaks to how compromised he is when it comes to Hermione. Especially because with Bellatrix no longer occupied by Tonks, she might turn even more attention to trying to trip him up.
- ‘Snape Death Toll Rises’ - I don’t think I appreciated that impacts of the press assuming that Severus was responsible. If so - and if he becomes headmaster - it is going to be very difficult to get him exonerated post-war (if he survives). I don’t know if we’ll be lucky enough to see that far ahead, but I wonder all the same.
- Reopening the Jiggers case? I wonder whether this is a throwaway line to torture Severus a little more, or whether it’ll become relevant to the plot.
- I am taking the sign he removed his boots with Hermione, but not with Narcissa as a sign of his love (I am delusional, I know).
- I’ll admit it, Narcissa is growing on me. I love that she sees Severus’ affection for Hermione and respects it so thoroughly (even ships it, methinks - the way she says ‘your witch’ makes me melt). My heart aches for her, being so prepared to do whatever it takes to protect her family. The ‘whatever you need’ despite her panic, made my stomach turn. Once again, I hope she’ll get her revenge. And that little quip about ‘you could have waited ten minutes’? It feels like there’s some family resemblance to Tonks there. LOL
- I guess only time will tell whether a) Severus and Narcissa’s acting is good enough, or they’ll have to actually sleep together again (sob, please no - it would crush them all). And whether b) Voldie’s interest in Hermione will wane, if Severus acts disinterested enough. It’s hard to know how much of his … fascination with her is real, but it seems he does genuinely appreciate her powers?
- What /is/ Voldie up to? What’s he doing? Is it anything to do with Ollivander?
- Still love the Minerva/Moody moments … will they be sharing that whiskey hmmm?
- Hermione’s nightmare was so creepy …. the focus on how real it felt is making me very suspicious.
- I appreciate how Hermione’s trauma is still here and inconveniencing her - it feels very true to life. I hope that she might be able to unload onto Tonks or Minerva a bit more - do they even know the details about what went down on the solstice? It’s heartbreaking how she can’t let herself acknowledge it - she’s always comparing it to what Severus is enduring, which isn’t helpful to either of them. And minimising everything to stop Severus feeling guilty also doesn’t help. But I love that he’s trying to be there for her, now.
- A couple of friends mentioned the possibility that Hermione’s paranoia might not be unfounded, and there could actually be someone watching them. I’m still hoping it might just be her massive amounts of trauma, because the alternative would fuck things up so immensely. And who could it be? And to what end? We’ve run through several possibilities - Rita Skeeter, a portrait, house elves, an order member who has been imperiused/compromised (perhaps Tonks at Azkaban?), Harry with the map …. any of them would cause massive complications. But the biggest worry is that Voldie has found a way to fuck with the bond ... In chapter 92 he said Severus is just an “extension of” himself, after all. We weren’t sure how that would even work, but are spiralling all the same.
- What on Earth is Minerva planning? She is the queen and always correct, obviously, but I don’t think Severus will react well if the ’surprise’ is anything like her last one. I’m guessing it could be something to do with the idea mentioned in the first scene? It was nice to see even Moody is finally on his side, but is it too little too late? They’re not throwing him a surprise party, are they? Or telling the rest of the Order about the bond? Or forcing him into therapy? Because I’m stumped. It’s telling that Hermione isn’t going, and I can’t wait to spend months overanalysing any potential clue I can find!
You say you don’t feel like you’ve moved the plot forward enough, but I think you’ve got it to exactly the place it needed to be. Severus and Hermione are the heart of this story after all, and having the focus return to their relationship for a little while is always extremely welcome - especially because I’m sure things will return to Hell soon enough.
Thank you so much for the update, this was the most perfect chapter; the wait is always more than worth it. All the little moments of affection between Severus and Hermione was an especially sweet Christmas gift - it has made me very happy in a time when I’m not feeling festive at all. I hope 2025 is kinder to you than 2024 was, and I really do hope you’re not feeling too much pressure to update - I’m sure all of us readers would much rather the fic takes you longer to complete, than rushing to complete it and not enjoying the journey.

what an amazing, conplexe story tou created with such amazing depth in your characters and once again this chapter did not disapoint. you say the story did not move along but i disagree. the relationships between the characters and their deep conversation were amazing and overdue. hopefully Severus and Hermione will gain a much deeper understanding of each other. I also absolutely loved your Minerva and Tonks. and even Narcissa was helpful here!
now im wondering about the people Severus is about to meet. cannot wait for more (but will do!)
