If you ever pick up this story, the magical power drain issues might not apply to human users. In Warcraft, humans have little natural talent for controlling magic with precision, but have extreme magical power. To the point the first like hundred human mages annihilated a massive troll army and their loa gods collectively with a single firestorm they jointly created. When learning, they scared the piss out of the high elves with their immense, raw power. This is also why human mages in the lore usually specialize in fire and eleven mages in frost. Fire magic requires little delicacy and a lot of power to use well and the inverse is true of frost. Elves in Warcraft actually, ironically, have little magical power.

I see that your SC/Gate story has been updated recently, so have you given up on this one or simply forgotten it? Either way, let us know so that we can have some closure to this, either by posting a hiatus status or another chapter, or some form of update. En taro Tassadar, Watcher!
