And what else could the wolves do if Charlie was already changing? He'd HATE being a vampire, even more than Edward has. I mean, it sucks and all, but they didn't know about the Cullens back then...or the Cullens at least weren't around to train Charlie properly.
Bella is the better person. And so is Edward, for recognizing it. :D
