It's crazy to consider Roger ever wanting to become a massive, but honestly, I think it makes this story all the more amazing because it means you have a game changer planned, and boy am i ready for it! Great job, I think each chapter is better than the last :D

Roger having some of Ace's personality is cool and seems right, but Whitebeard did say that Luffy acts more like Roger did than Ace does.

I really like this take on where their dreams came from and how it was shaped by their circumstances and family.
I especially dig kid Roger - the prospect that he didn't want to become a pirate per se but rather wanted to be important, have control, have family have everything, be a king in his own right. It fits both the time (before the Great Pirate Age that he himself started and made piracy popular) and the creation of the title that didn't exist before him and was probably more intended as an epithet than anything else. Also, that's a really neat beginning for that straw hat, and would explain how he was willing to give it to Shanks relatively early, I think.
The protecting-stuff with Sabo and Luffy is also beautiful, and that Luffy got the Pirate King the most freedom from him. Sometimes I get the feeling people forego the influence Sabo had/the role he played for Luffy in favor of the D-brothers relationship. Personally, I think Sabo planted the idea of pirates in Ace's head xD
Anyway, I think this fic is a great idea, and I'm curious about what happens next, even if it's also nice as a three-shot.

This is nice to read. There isn't much known about the past of the first two, but I like the theme with which you go here. They just grown up how the world around them made them. It is very fitting.
