Personally I think it'd be interesting to see either. My vote is more for take your own angle on the movie because things would have gone differently with the marines there I imagine. Maybe kinda do both? Like let hiccup leave but he comes back by finding out about the red death or hears some news or maybe incorporate httyd 2 and he hears bout his mom? (Omg so pumped to see that movie!) Either way its your choice. I look forward to reading whichever you write.:)
