A Cold Night

Sally Jackson sat in the living room of her mother's house, of which she was visiting for Christmas. Sally was glad Gabe wasn't here, although the last few days she'd spent with him hadn't been so bad, he'd sobered up, and washed himself, even made breakfast one day, leading Sally to the conclusion he was up to something. Sally's mother was knitting a scarf for Sally's Aunt Bertie. Percy moaned from the room down the hall.

Sally stood up and walked down the hall, opening the door to his room, where he was sitting up with his legs crossed, his nose red from a cold. "I'm dying!" Percy moaned dramatically as he flopped back against his mattress and groaned.

"You are not," she said patiently as she felt his forehead. "It's just a little cold." Sally gave him a small smile, as a horrible thought struck her; what if one day he really is dying? Sally shook the thought out of her head and looked down on her son, who was now playing with a stuffed Nemo. He looked so innocent, his only worry was if he received the gift he wanted, which was a goldfish.

Sally ran her fingers through her son's hair, he looked up at her, his eyes boring into her very soul. "Somethin' wrong mom?" he asked, setting the stuffed fish down beside him and sitting up.

"Nothing honey, you should sleep." Sally suggested, poking his belly and making him laugh. "You'll feel better later." Percy nodded and laid back down, Sally covered him with his blankets, kissed his forehead, and walked out of his room. Just before she shut the door, she heard Percy whisper;

"I love you Mom." Sally smiled, and shut the door softly, thinking to herself; even if he never says it again, he loved me once, and that's okay with me.
