Chapter Twenty - Seven / 2 - In the Light

"It is a truth universally acknowledged that a zombie in possession of brains must be in want of more brains." ― Seth Grahame-Smith, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies

Moans could be heard from a distance, the mercenary reaching down to lift the boy into his arms, they needed to move now, though the small bird's sobs where louder than before, Slade trying to calm the shaking form, rubbing his back in small circles.

"It'll be alright, shhh." His bird looked up as if just noticing he wasn't, wrapping thin arms around the man's neck, sobbing over his shoulder, allowing himself to be carried towards the exit, the man able to control the echo, setting each foot down with ease, though it seemed he wasn't quiet enough, one of the undead turning their way, seeming to unhinge its jaw as he released a sickening growl alerting the others of their presence. It happened sutle, them being backed to the door, shots firing as they continued to be herded, soon hitting a wall.

"Blast it…" His plan had failed, but in all fairness, he hadn't thought his boy would break down, then again, he supposed he should have suspected as much with all he'd been through in the past few weeks.

They had no other choose, they had to go back up the stairs, though when the man tried to shut the door, he found it rather impossible, a foot being crushed instead, cursing under his breath, carrying a small hysterical robin in his arms, going as fast as possible, though it seemed the rotting flesh trailing them wasn't able to climb the sharp pathway to the layers above, simply piling the ground at the bottom of the jagged metal steps.

They had no where else to run, finding themselves trapped in that oh-so-farmiliar room, slamming the door shut as they veered the corner, they were stuck. It turned out the youngest hadn't even started his complete mental breakdown, head leaning forth with wide eyes, seemingly trying to suck in breaths that stopped halfway, falling out of the man's hold, doubling over as his form gasped for air, lungs screaming for the much-needed substance, hands moving to his neck. The man was at his side in a moment, lying him to his back, doing three chest compressions before blowing a puff of his own air into the smaller form's lungs.

"Come on, boy…." He continued the process. It wasn't long when the bird's eyes rolled back, head going limp, making the mercenary curse under his breath. "Come on!" His fist met contact with the teen's chest, making his arms lift off the ground, though nothing else seemed to happen. The boy's chest lifted as air was puffed into his lungs once more. He nearly broke his chest as he made contact again, puffing air. "Your not allowed to die! I forbid it!" His hands crashed down for a last time, though there was no response, the mercenary leaning forward, lips meeting the others, blowing yet again.

The small, weak boy under him coughing as his senses returned, bumping heads with the man as he jolted forward.

"Ow…!" He screamed in a soft tone, rubbing his head as he fell back to the ground.

"You have a bad habit of head bunting me when I'm trying to help you…" He rubbed his forehead, sending a smirk to his bird.

"Wh-what happened…?" He asked, his tone weak, though still strong.

"You where having a panic attack." He nodded, that made sence.

"I thought we where leaving?"

"We did." The man said simply, the other sending him a confused frown.

"um… Slade…? We're still here."

"Yes. We did leave, but where cornered, so we had to come back up." Robin hummed, they should have left earlier.

"So, what now?" He breathed, they where caged now, and as far as he could see, there was no other way out.

"We wait, and if where lucky, they don't learn to climb stairs." The bird laughed a bit at the thought of the things piling up the stairs. "Nice to see you have a sense of humor again." He turned, though the boy was already fast asleep on the rough warm carpet, far to exhausted to continue the conversation with the mercenary. The man shrugged, watching the boy for a moment before moving to the window. They where coming, even more so than before, they where sitting ducks.

It was maybe a week later when the pounding on the door sounded, Robin looking to the man with dark features, they'd feared this would happen.

"Do you think we can escape through the window again?" The boy asked in a low tone.

"No, no foot-holes. Help me move the couch." His bird did as he was told, said item soon being laid to the large sheet of metal the door was made of. Now all they could do was wait.

"Slade, what- what if-"

"Shhh, it'll be alright, boy." He felt a small form find his arms, him moving to hold the near to tears boy, petting his head as they stood. The pair looked to the door, the large barrier seeming to jump slightly with each bang, it wouldn't take them long to get through.

Neither got a wink of sleep that night, Robin being kept up by the loud creatures, and Slade finding himself unable thinking while he slept the undead would eat his bird. The restless teen simply sat in the corner, eyes drooping before he shook his head, he couldn't sleep, not now, he was far to afraid to sleep, thinking if he slept he'd wake to the other being consumed. They both watched the door, noises erupting through it, Robin could have sworn it was opening, his head resting between his knees. A hand found its way under the boy's chin, lifting him to look into the single gray-blue eye, lips meeting his own. He yelped in surprise as a tough slid past his teeth, the kiss being softer than he was used to, though he still felt his brain go numb, the man now straddling his form.

A loud ear deafening screech sounded as the door swung to the side, the mercenary pulling back from the kiss, the teen trying to follow. The older man ran to the desk, pulling out the four guns, tossing two towards the teen, who was barely able to catch them in his state of mind, shaking his head to get the misted feeling to leave him, cocking a gun.

Shots already fired as the older man was already shooting towards the oncoming wave of rot, him soon joining in, surprised at his aim, he nearly hit dead on each time the trigger was pulled, though his arms shook from the recoil.

Click

Out of ammo, he thought as the clicking continued, quickly switching guns before one of the creatures was able to bite his arm. There where to many of them! They where getting closer!

"Slade!" He tried though it came out as a gurgled mess as one of the undead caught his neck, dull teeth cutting through his flesh.

A hand grabbed him by the collar, pulling him from the tangled mess of bodies, pulled along as the mercenary ran through to the kitchen, shutting the weak door with a slam, moving quickly to set the small injured body to the table.

"Sla-" He tried, quickly being interrupted by the other.

"Shhh, it'll be alright…!" He was panicking, though he didn't know why, he never panicked. There was so much blood, he didn't know where to start, he'd surly live if he could close this damn wound! His hands where shaking slightly, though not enough to notice, as he touched the boy's blood stricken flesh, looking around quickly for something to cover the ripped flesh, a small hand touching his arm.

"Slade…" His bird tweeted softly, looking up with worn eyes. "I got bit… there's no point… you know what... you have to do…" His vision was starting to go fuzzy.

"No, you'll be fine if I can just-"

"Slade… it's not your fault… you had no control... over what happened in that room… I know if you'd known... you'd have saved me in a heart beat…" His breath slowed slightly. "You know… what you have... to do…" The man nodded, bringing the gun to his temple, though his finger didn't move, making the teen look up with a lazy smile.

"It's okay…. I… I love you…" He breather back arching as a high screech filled the air, telling the man he was gone.

"I love you to… my little bird…" He shut his eye.

Only one shot fired, blood splattering the wall, the boy going limp, form becoming far more peaceful, though the man was unable to look at the bird, so lifeless in his permanent sleep.

The bangs met his ear, though it was far to late, the second door bursting open to revel far more zombie-like creatures than before. His eyes looked to the animals, aiming the gun.

Click

"Damn…" He muttered, moving to fight them hand to hand, if he was going to die, he was going to die fighting. His anger fueled him as each swing hit it's mark, the green tinted flesh falling back, though it just wasn't enough, there where to many. His arm was attacked in a sharp pain before he knew what was happening, blood trickling down his buff features, him already feeling off from the infection. He tried to fight, he really did, but it was too late, his body being tackled to the ground, flesh being ripped from bone, he'd be with his bird soon enough.
