A Smile Is Worth a Thousand Words
Chapter 1
It was May 15, almost near the end of spring. One of the women in the hospital gave birth to a healthy baby boy. The husband and old man clapped, happy that their loved one finally gave birth. It was a joyous occasion, but the family unexpectedly received some bad news.
"I'm extremely sorry to be the bearer of bad news," the doctor said, "but your son was born mute."
The couple was filled with shock, unable to believe that they would never be able to hear their child's voice. They pled with the doctor to heal their child and wouldn't listen when the doctor told them that it just wasn't possible. Tired of the scene, the old man finally stepped up and put his hands on the couple's shoulders.
"It's okay," he said. "Be strong. Not just for yourselves, but also for your son. Just because he's mute doesn't mean that he cannot accomplish anything. Believe in him. Support him. He will struggle, but he will achieve his dreams. He is my grandson!"
As if he was able to understand the situation, the baby suddenly started to smile the most beautiful smile the adults in the room had ever seen. Everybody stood in awe at what they saw. It was like that smile lifted some dark clouds from their shoulders. They began to laugh and smile, seeing how happy the baby was.
"Haha..." the woman cried, "And here we were getting all worried and worked up, and he's all...haha." She couldn't hold her tears any longer; the tears were streaming down her face. She hugged her son to her chest.
"This kid is definitely going places," the doctor said in awe. He couldn't believe that the baby was able to change the atmosphere so quickly. The gloom that was in the room had turned into joyous laughter.
"Ho, ho, ho," the old man laughed, " What did I tell you people. He is my grandson after all!"
"Yes he is," the dad said. He took the baby from his wife and lifted him up high into the air. "His name shall be Sawamura Eijun. Welcome to this world, you crazy kid!"
