The first time he had tried to visit Yao's house after the war, he was still perched piteously on his wheelchair and had to strain his back with much effort to reach the golden doorknocker. It was a cloudy day, and above him was just an endless expanse of pure whiteness, signifying precipitation was coming along with the strong winds.
The person who opened the door was a young province who couldn't be much older than twelve, with copious black hair tucked messily under a faded rice-paddy hat and piercing golden eyes that seemed to see right through him. Adjusting the top of her pale green hanfu, she squinted suspiciously at him. "Ni shi shui?" she asked, looking at him icily with a pointed tone to her words. Registering his-half blank stare, she coughed awkwardly and switched to English. "Who you are? We no buy things. Go back to you come from."
"I am Kiku Honda," he said monotonously, the bottom of his mouth twitching in anticipation and the annoyance of being held up by this province. "I wish to see Yao-nii-san unress he is busy. Prease terr him his brother-"
The girl widened her eyes halfway through his sentence, the redness from her cheeks fading into an extremely pale shade. "You be Japan. Yao-lao da and me hurt by you. Go back to Hell and live with Demon. Japanese devils forbidden here!" She slammed the bamboo door into his face, a whirling movement of green and yellow and brown, and in that instant it started to rain.
