The next day, Kara was still doing her best to avoid Jason, ignoring his texts as she wasn't sure how to reply. Her feelings were a mess, and with everything happening with the A game, she couldn't let anything cloud her judgement. Her fight with the girls was going to be a setback as they would never believe she'd forgive them for throwing her under the bus once again. She was officially out of the group, which meant they no longer had their mole. Not to mention, they would probably be digging more into Lucas at that very moment, and who knew what they'd find. Kara needed to talk to Lucas to find out whether he had cleaned up all his loose ends. She was surprised when a limo pulled up at the location they agreed to meet at, raising an eyebrow at the back door opened to reveal Lucas in a black hoodie.
"What's with the wheels?" Kara questioned, stepping inside the car, sitting beside him.
A loud screeching from a speaker above her caused Kara to almost jump out of her skin. She could see the way Lucas flinched at the static sound and realised he was practically shaking. What the hell was going on?
"We have a problem. You're both here to help clean up your mess" A familiar mechanical voice announced from the speaker, as Kara felt the limo start moving again
Kara frowned as she took a closer look to see the writing above the speaker said 'Driver's seat' and realised that A.D must have been driving the limo. No one wonder Lucas looked so terrified.
"Decided to get a part time job as a limo driver, huh?" Kara mocked, as Lucas gave her a look, knowing now wasn't the time for joking.
"You've both been useful to me in the past, but now it seems you've become a liability. What are we going to do about that, Kara?" A.D questioned.
"What were we supposed to do? None of the girls know or even suspect we're on the A team…this changes nothing-" Kara began, but was angrily cut off by A.D.
"This changes everything! You both should have kept your mouth's shut. Instead the girls have the upper hand for once" A.D explained, as Kara felt as though she was being scolded like a child.
"What do you want us to do?" Kara asked, averting her eyes to the ground.
"We need a new mole in the group. And I know just the girl" A.D replied, as Kara could practically hear the smirk in their voice.
"We're luring Aria here. She's going to become the new…well, you" Lucas told her, as Kara's forehead wrinkled.
"And why would she do that?" Kara queried.
"Because she thinks we still have her file. The one which you burnt. Good job with that" A.D pointed out, making Kara cringe.
"How do you know she'll really turn on the other's?" Kara inquired, as A.D scoffed over the speaker.
"Because she's already halfway here. Loyalty doesn't seem to be a quality these girls have, does it?" A.D stated, an amused tone in their voice.
"And where do I fall into this?" Kara asked, as she felt the limo come to a halt, as A.D pulled over.
"All in good time, Kara. Now, why don't you join me up front?" A.D said, sounding more like an order more than anything else.
Kara waited nervously for Aria to show, as she fidgeted in the front seat, stealing glances at A.D who was sitting beside her. They had been silent for the last few minutes and it was slowly killing Kara. They had put their black mask back on before she had entered and as usual, she couldn't even make out if they were a man or woman.
"Who did you think was going to win at the blind school? Me or Noel?" Kara blurted out before she could stop herself.
"I was never going to let Noel kill you, Kara" A.D informed her, surprising the younger girl.
"Well, you let him get pretty damn close, asshole" Kara muttered.
"And you got pretty close to killing him yourself. Why didn't you?" A.D asked her.
"I'm not like you. I'm not a killer" Kara spat out, with a shake of her head.
"Everything I've ever done is to get a step closer to finding out who Bethany's killer is. You'll see that soon" A.D informed her.
"Noel mysteriously disappeared after our fight and no one's heard from him since…I don't suppose you had anything to do with that, did you?" Kara suggested, raising an eyebrow.
"If there's one thing I hate, Kara. It's loose ends" A.D replied, making Kara grit her teeth.
"That didn't exactly answer my-" Kara was cut off as they heard the limo backdoor open and close, as A.D flicked a switch on the dashboard of the car.
"I want out" Aria's voice announced through the speakers, having entered the limo moments ago.
"It's not going to be that easy" Lucas replied, as Kara heard a ruffling of fabric and assumed that he had removed his hood.
"Lucas? You're A.D?" Aria questioned; surprise clear in her voice.
"Do you really think I would reveal my identity so easily if I was?" Lucas scoffed.
"What is this? Why did you ask me here?" Aria insisted, impatiently.
"You seem desperate. We can use desperate" Lucas explained.
"I want out of this game. Now" Aria went on, with an almost angry tone.
"What about your friends?" Lucas asked.
"What about them?" Aria retorted, as Kara raised an eyebrow at A.D.
"There's no out of this game, Aria. There's only the winning side and losing side. Your friends will lose, whether they realise that or not" Lucas told her.
"Then how can I win?" Aria exclaimed, as Kara scoffed.
"She's certainly not shy about throwing her friends under the bus, is she?" Kara muttered to A.D.
"Leaving Ali and coming here was an important step in earning A.D's trust, but you still have a long way to go" Lucas warned Aria, who let out a scoff.
"And what happens if I decide I'm done playing games and just press this button to take down the privacy screen?" Aria suggested, as Kara's eyes widened in panic.
"I wouldn't do that if I were you. A.D doesn't like people who don't play by the rules" Lucas stated.
"Look, I'll do whatever I need to do to stay out of prison. Just…tell me what to do" Aria insisted.
"You're going to be our spy, Aria. You report everything you know to us…or your file becomes public knowledge" Lucas threatened.
"…Okay. I'm in" Aria replied, after a long moment of silence.
"You realise that you'll have to betray your friends? Torture them even?" Lucas went on.
"Like I said. I'm in" Aria stated, a dark tone to her voice.
"I think your playing with fire. We still don't know why Aria was in Radley. She could turn on us" Kara warned, after they had dropped Lucas back off at his apartment.
Hanna had moved out of the apartment the previous day after their fight, most likely going to stay at the Radley. That left Kara and A.D still in the limo, as the former wondered what A.D was expecting her to do. How could she make up for falling out with the girls? And more importantly she had some questions of her own.
"Alison's pregnant. But you already knew that didn't you?" Kara guessed, watching A.D nod slowly.
"What the hell did you do?" Kara asked.
"What you wanted. I didn't use Emily's eggs" A.D replied, as Kara's forehead wrinkled.
"So, you really had nothing to do with Ali's pregnancy?" Kara questioned.
"I didn't say that" A.D stated, almost sounding like they were smiling.
"You did something to her?" Kara insisted, growing frustrated.
"My original plan was to impregnate Alison with Emily's eggs-" A.D began, but was quickly cut off by Kara.
"You are one sick fuck, you know that?" Kara grimaced, shaking her head.
"You made me realise how unimaginative that plan was. Then I realised I could kill two birds with one stone" A.D informed her, as Kara began to get a bad feeling.
"You impregnated her with someone else's eggs?" Kara questioned, the mere thought making her feel sick.
"Oh no, the baby's Alison's…but it's not Archer's" A.D informed her.
"Who's is it?" Kara frowned.
"You were this close to being the child's step-mother, Kara. Sounds like you had a lucky escape" A.D told her, amused.
"Step-mother? Who…oh my God…" Kara trailed off, in horror.
"Wren doesn't know. Yet. I wanted you to be the one to tell him" A.D went on, as Kara felt bile rising in her throat.
"You fucking bastard! What the hell is wrong with you? How could you do that to him?!" Kara yelled, raising her fist to hit the masked figure.
"Don't!" A.D exclaimed, catching her wrist before she could strike them, an angry tone to their voice.
"He's Bethany's brother, doesn't that mean anything to you?" Kara exclaimed.
"Of course, it does! Why do you think I'm doing this? I…I wanted there to be some new part of her in the world" A.D admitted, dropping her wrist.
"Bethany wouldn't have wanted this and you know that" Kara accused.
"…Wren has always been unpredictable…" A.D trailed off, as Kara scoffed angrily.
"And this way you can keep him in line. Two birds, one stone" Kara said, shaking her head.
"Don't forget this baby will also be Jason's niece. Maybe this has been about keeping you in line too?" A.D suggested.
"…How the hell did you even do it?" Kara questioned, after a moment.
"You and Wren really should have been more careful with how you disposed of your condoms-" A.D started, but Kara quickly stopped them.
"Ugh, I'm gonna' throw up" Kara grimaced, looking a little green.
"Not in the limo, thanks" A.D muttered, pressing a button which caused the passenger door to swing open.
"You're too scared to tell him. That's why you want me to do it" Kara realised.
"You're the only messenger he won't kill" A.D shrugged, starting the engine of the limo.
"You've crossed a line. You're not going to be able to walk back over it" Kara warned A.D, who simply gestured for her to get out of the limo.
With a roll of her eyes, Kara did as she was told, when a thought came into her head, leaving her to question everything. With wide eyes, she turned back to the limo and leaned down.
"What did you mean I was almost a step-mother?" Kara asked.
"Oh, Wren never said? He was going to propose" A.D informed her, before leaning over and slamming the limo door shut, leaving Kara speechless on the sidewalk.
Kara ran a hand through her hair as she sat in her dimly lit hotel room, waiting anxiously for the knock on her door she knew would be coming soon. She had texted Wren that she needed to meet him and had received a reply almost immediately. Whatever Wren was expecting her to tell him, Kara imagined he was about to get a nasty surprise. A sharp knock on her door had Kara flinching as she took a deep breath and stepped forward, pulling the door open. Wren was standing there, a nervous look on his face, and a smile growing on his lips when he saw her. Kara's forehead wrinkled when she didn't feel the flutter in her heart she was used to when she saw him.
"Hey…you said we needed to talk?" Wren asked, as Kara let him into the room.
"Do you want to sit down?" Kara asked, confusing Wren, who gave her a strange look.
"What's happened? Are you okay?" Wren questioned; concern clear in his voice.
"Wren, just please sit down-" Kara started, but he was quick to stop her.
"No, not until you tell me what's wrong" Wren insisted, as Kara let out a long sigh.
"Alison's pregnant" Kara announced, watching Wren's eyes widen, and realised he didn't even know that.
"So, my sister loses her life because of these girls and Alison gets a baby?" Wren shook his head, rubbing a hand through his short hair.
"The baby's not Archer's" Kara exclaimed, making Wren frown.
"She cheated on him?" Wren inquired, watching Kara bite his lip.
"I'm sorry, Wren. I'm so sorry" Kara sighed, as took a few steps forward, wanting to reach out and touch him.
"For what?" Wren queried, a bad feeling settling in his stomach.
"If I had any idea this was what A.D was planning…" Kara trailed off, as a horrified look grew on Wren's face.
"Who's the father, Kara?" Wren insisted, praying that he was wrong.
"…It's you. It's all part of A.D's sick game, of keeping us all in line-" Kara was cut off as Wren suddenly dropped to the ground, his knees giving out.
"No. No, it can't be. I can't…this can't be happening" Wren stuttered, as Kara crouched down in front of him.
"Hey, we'll figure this out. This isn't your fault" Kara exclaimed, reaching out to touch his hand.
"I'm gonna' be sick" Wren cried, pushing himself and running to the en suite, slamming the door shut.
Kara let her head fall into her hands, not sure what to do. There was no way she could make this right. A baby was going to be born that was both Wren and Alison's, whether they liked it or not. Everything was different now. Slowly, Kara stood up and walked towards the bathroom, coming to sit by the door, able to hear Wren's heavy breathing from inside.
"Wren?" Kara called out.
"I heard about what happened at the blind school. Are you alright?" Wren questioned, quietly.
"I'm fine. Look, we should talk about-" Kara began, but was cut off as the door was opened.
"I can't talk about this right now. I…I need some time" Wren told her, walking out of the bathroom.
"I understand" Kara nodded, pushing herself to her feet.
"Thank you for telling me" Wren mumbled, his gaze focused on the floor.
"Hey, I've still got your back. That's not gonna' change" Kara stated, as Wren's eyes snapped up to hers, a grateful look on his face.
Before Kara knew what was happening, Wren was pulling her into a hug, his arms wrapped tightly around her waist. Kara hugged him back just as tightly, as Wren let his head fall into the crook of her neck, taking a deep breath. Things weren't the way they used to be, but the pair still cared deeply for each other.
"Be careful" Wren said, pulling away, rubbing at his wet eyes.
"You too" Kara sighed, not wanting to let him go.
The next words to leave Kara's mouth jumped out before she could stop herself. It seemed so insignificant now, but she needed to know the truth.
"A.D said you were going to propose to me, is…were they lying?" Kara asked, as Wren turned away from her.
"I was" Wren mumbled, tears threatening to spill from his eyes.
"I really did love you, Wren" Kara told him, placing her hand on his shoulder, as Wren didn't turn around.
"Past tense?" Wren couldn't help but ask, as Kara let out a quiet sigh.
"…Does he make you happy?" Wren inquired, a moment later.
"Wren, I never meant for any of this to happen. I'd never want to hurt you" Kara insisted, as Wren turned around with a sad smile.
"I know. I just want you to be happy, Kara. You should do whatever makes you happy" Wren explained, leaning forward to press a chaste kiss to her cheek.
"We'll talk soon" Wren stated, pulling away a moment later, as she nodded.
He made a speedy exit from the hotel room, obviously trying to stay strong, but Kara could see how devastated he was from the revelation. Kara couldn't imagine what it would feel like finding out the person you hated most in the world was having your baby.
"Vodka shot please…actually make it a double" Kara exclaimed, jumping up to sit on a stool at the Radley bar.
"Got any I.D?" The bartender asked, as Kara gave them a look.
"I've come to this bar countless times in the last month, you really need my I.D again?" Kara complained, as the bartender blinked at her.
"I.D please" They repeated, in a bored tone.
With a roll of her eyes, she took her I.D out of her pocket, looking around the bar for a moment, surprised to see a very interesting person drinking by themselves. With a smirk, Kara stood up and went to go sit on the stool next to them.
"Detective Furey, I don't think we've been formally introduced. I'm Kara Dixon" She announced, holding out her hand for the police officer to shake.
"Your one of Spencer's friends" The Detective stated, shaking her hand gladly.
"Ex-friend" Kara muttered, as the bartender handed her I.D back to her and her double shot.
"What happened?" Detective Furey asked, curiously.
"They showed their true colours…as always" Kara shrugged, taking the shot down with one large gulp.
"Toby told me about what they did to you in the past. I have to admit I was surprised to see you being friendly with them again" Furey pointed out.
"And I was surprised to hear you've been sleeping with Spencer" Kara retorted, as the Detective's eyes widened.
"Who…who told you?" Furey stuttered, making Kara scoff.
"Spencer, of course. I think she's pretty pleased with herself having a Detective in her back pocket" Kara stirred, watching Furey frown.
"Well, not anymore. The station was sent Archer Dunhill's finger yesterday. We believe he was murdered on the night he disappeared" Furey explained.
"Huh, the same night the girl's complained about his care? Interesting" Kara stated, as Furey's lips twitched into a smile.
"My thoughts exactly. I don't suppose you know of any more…interesting information?" Furey inquired.
"If you're asking me if I think the girls killed him? Well, it wouldn't exactly be the first time…" Kara trailed off, as Furey tilted his head.
"Excuse me?" Furey asked.
"Bethany, Ian, Nate, Shana, and now Archer? Death really seems to follow these girls around, doesn't it?" Kara pointed out.
"Are you saying they were involved in all those deaths?" Furey gaped, as Kara shrugged.
"Maybe. Hey, didn't you meet Spencer the night that Archer 'disappeared'?" Kara questioned, using air finger quotes.
"…She told me she was burying a body that night…" Furey trailed off, looking sick to his stomach.
"The last place Archer was seen was Welby…that place is surrounded by woods, isn't it?" Kara went on.
"The perfect place to bury a body" Furey mumbled.
"Did you pay for your drinks that night?" Kara asked, making Furey frown.
"No. It was…Spencer" Furey realised.
"I wonder what card she paid with?" Kara speculated, barely able to keep the smirk off her face.
"It makes you question what else A.D is capable of, doesn't it?" Lucas mumbled after Kara had met up with him the next day at his loft.
"If this is getting too much, you know you can leave whenever you want to, right? I'd never think any less of you" Kara insisted, watching Lucas shake his head.
"Not going to happen. You stuck by me in high school, I'm sticking by you now" Lucas told her, as Kara gave him a grateful smile.
Her phone began ringing a few seconds later, as she picked it up to find Jason was calling her yet again. With a sigh, she declined his call, biting her lip as she did so. She hated avoiding him, wanting nothing more than to tell him everything that had happened, but she still didn't know she felt.
"Jason again? Your torturing that poor guy" Lucas stated.
"I know, but if I see him without understanding how I really feel…well, that's going to hurt him a lot more" Kara explained.
"I think you know what Jason means to you, Kara. I mean has it really ever changed?" Lucas insisted, as Kara mulled his over.
Just as Kara opened her mouth to answer, there was a loud knocking at the metal door of the loft, leaving the pair to exchange a look. Half expecting it to be A.D or one of their minions, they were surprised to see Hanna on the other side. She looked angry as she held her iPad out in front of her, a page of property listings on the device. She pushed past the pair, storming into the loft that she had been calling her home only a few das before.
"The warehouse I put all my money into buying…it's up for sale! I checked my bank account, all the money I put into this business, it's gone!" Hanna all but yelled, as Kara crossed her arms, a smug look on her face.
"It's free real estate" Kara grinned, as the pair gave her a look.
"…You know, like the meme? Never mind" Kara muttered, seeing their confused faces.
"I'm going to lose everything!" Hanna cried, as Kara shrugged.
"Just like I did, then? Or have you already forgotten how you sent me to prison?" Kara pointed out.
"Please, I'm begging you…just, don't take it all" Hanna pleaded, a pitiful expression on her face.
"Do you remember when you visited me in prison, Han? I told you I was going to make you wish you'd never left the dollhouse…I intend to keep that promise" Kara spat out, taking a step forward.
"I never…" Hanna trailed off, as she looked at something on the table behind Kara.
Kara frowned when she realised she had left out some of their research on Bethany. Dylan had been busy trying to find out anything he could about Wren's sister since he had found out the truth, but as of yet nothing had been useful. Until now. Kara saw how Hanna was looking strangely at a picture of Bethany when she was young and institutionalized in Radley. It was almost like Hanna recognized her.
"Bethany Young" Kara announced, as Hanna's eyes snapped up to hers.
"What?" Hanna asked, her forehead wrinkled in confusion.
"The blonde. It's Bethany…but I get the feeling you knew that already?" Kara suggested.
"I…I need to go…" Hanna stuttered, quickly turning on her heel.
"Hanna, wait!" Lucas exclaimed, but Hanna was already running out of the loft.
"I think we just found our next lead" Kara exclaimed, patting Lucas on the shoulder.
"I'll phone Dylan…and you phone Jason" Lucas insisted, refusing to take no for an answer, handing Kara her phone.
Taking a deep breath, Kara quickly dialled Jason's number, placing the phone to her ear. Lucas was right. She couldn't hide from her feelings any longer.
"Jase? It's me. We need to talk…" Kara trailed off, as he picked up the call.
