A blond man, about 37 years old, sat at a desk filing papers. He worked in a Law office from 9-5, day in, day out. Today was just like any other day, people coming in, requesting to see their lawyer or picking up a document. He'd been working at this job for ten years now, and while it offered a good paycheck, it was incredibly boring. As a child, he'd always imagined being in the Navy, like his father. What an imaginative and naive child he was.
The man was named Ralph and at the moment he was exhausted. He hadn't gotten much sleep the night before on account of nightmares, and the woman he was talking to was being incredibly annoying.
"Ma'am, like I said, you cannot set up a two o'clock meeting on Thursday, that time frame is already taken. Can you settle for two thirty?"
The woman was bent on having a meeting at a very specific time, for reasons that Ralph still did not understand or care about. She said it was something about her cat's very delicate diet and she had to have the meeting at two. It made no sense.
He was finally able to settle things with the woman and she left mumbling something about "nobody respecting the animals anymore".
Ralph went back to filing documents as he checked the clock. Four o'clock. Only one more hour. All he wanted to do was go home and sleep.
He didn't look up as he heard the door opening and somebody shuffled up to his desk.
"How can I help you?", Ralph said, eyes down, with a bored voice.
"Oh, um, I'm here to pick up some documents. My lawyer, Mr. Smith, told me I could pick them up at the front desk, here."
"What kind of documents?"
"Well, it's just a letter...not really a document..I guess.."
Ralph didn't remember seeing a letter for a client anywhere.
"What is your name, sir?"
"Merridew, Jack Merridew"
Ralph let out a gasp. He finally looked up at the man, and saw a red headed face with piercing blue eyes. The man himself didn't look very familiar. But the eyes. His eyes were exactly the same. At that moment Ralph didn't see a man in front of him, he saw a boy. A boy with a painted face and a spear. A savage.
Ralph couldn't see, couldn't hear. It was like he was paralyzed. All he could think about was the island. It was like he was there. He could clearly see the trees, feel the heat, hear the chants.
"Kill the beast! Cut his throat! Spill his blood!"
He could clearly remember his fear, the bloodshed, his lost friends…
They were gone.
All because of the man standing in front of him. The person who plagued his nightmares, who he vowed to never see or think about again.
A voice brought him out of his daze,
"Uh...sir? Are you alright? Can I have my letter?"
Ralph came back to reality and looked up at the man again.
"I-i'm sorry….I just...excuse me a moment..I just need to.."
With that Ralph got up from his desk and left the room for a moment to collect himself.
Jack was left alone in front of the desk, visibly annoyed by the secretary.
"I wonder what his problem is," he thought.
It was then that Jack saw the name on the plaque on the desk, and he realized that he recognized the strange secretary.
Suddenly everything made sense.
