Chapter 24

Three days later…

It's Friday, the day David is scheduled to come home from the hospital. He is more than ready to come home, he has done everything that was asked of him so he would be able to go home today. He's happy that's he's getting to go home because there is only a week of school left and he wants to be there, not only to say goodbye to everyone for the summer, but to work on finals and to end the year on a good note. After all, he's going to be a senior next year and wants to start his senior year with a clean slate. He's so grateful to Michelle for bringing him his homework this past week so he didn't get behind. He's so happy to have Michelle in his life, he doesn't know what he would do without her.

David is alone with his thoughts as he packs his bag. His arm is still broken but at least it's out of the sling, and just in a regular cast which allows him more mobility. He no longer has to wear the neck brace either, his surgery is healing up beautifully. He's still getting headaches periodically but that is to be expected, he has been taking the medicine given to him and they are helping him. He's glad his parents brought the electric wheelchair from home, it certainly makes things easier. He is able to move around a lot easier and faster with it. David still struggles to dress himself but it will get easier with more practice, he didn't really have a chance to practice in the hospital since he was required to wear the hospital gowns they provided for him.

David finally finished packing and went into the bathroom to take a shower and get dressed and by the time he finishes, his parents should be there to pick him up.

A short time later…

Niles and Daphne finally arrive at the hospital to pick up David. They are both so ecstatic to finally be bringing their son home, they have missed not having him there. Daphne made sure David's room was all ready for him, she spent a whole day cleaning it and organizing it so it would be ready for him when he got home. She made everything more accessible for him and within easy reach. She's even going to cook his favorite foods for lunch and dinner, because she knows that he's tired of eating hospital food.

Niles and Daphne walk hand in hand to David's room, both with smiles on their faces. They arrive at David's room and walk in but they don't see him. He has his overnight back sitting open on the bed, full of his belongings. Niles realizes David is in the bathroom, because the door is closed and he can hear him moving around in there. Niles gets Daphne's attention.

"Daphne, David is in the bathroom, I can hear him."

Daphne looks over at Niles and nods in acknowledgement.

Niles approaches the bathroom door and knocks.

"David, its dad and your mom is here with me!"

The bathroom suddenly gets quiet as David stops what he is doing. He answers his father.
"Oh hi, dad! I'm glad you're here! I will be right out, just let me finish what I'm doing!" David replies.

Niles just nods as he smiles at Daphne. She smiles back at him as she finishes packing David's bag.

After a bit David comes out of the bathroom in the wheelchair with his hair damp, and clean clothes. He greets his parents with a smile on his face.

"Hi mum, hi dad; I'm so glad you're here because I'm so ready to get out of here and go home."

Niles and Daphne both laugh.

"I know you are, son. I remember all the time I spent in here after my surgery last year and I couldn't wait to get out of here and go home. It was the best feeling in the world to finally be able to go home to my family and my own bed." Niles explains.

David nods as he listens to his dad.
"Your sisters are so anxious to see you and are happy you're coming home. They can't wait to see you."

David laughs.

"I never thought I would say this, but I'm actually looking forward to seeing them and please don't tell them that I said that either!"

Niles and Daphne look at each other and then back at David with sly looks on their faces.

"We promise we won't say anything." They both reply as they laugh.

David rolls his eyes at his parents as he rolls over to the bed and picks up his overnight bag. He looks over at his parents before speaking.

"Mum, dad; I'm ready to go, let's get out of here."

Niles and Daphne both nod as the approach David. Daphne's the one to speak.

"Did you pack everything? You didn't forget anything did you?" Daphne asks as they are leaving the room.

David nods.

"Yes, mum; I have everything. I didn't have a lot here, so there wasn't much for me to pack."

Niles turns off the light to David's room as they walk out the door. As they are walking down the hall to the exit, both Niles and David wave at various hospital staff they know. Before they get to the exit, David's doctor spots them, smiles and waves.

Niles and David both smile and wave back. They stop as the doctor approaches them. He kneels down by David's wheelchair.

The doctor smiles at David before speaking.

"I'm so glad you're going home today, David. I'm going to miss seeing you every day because you were such a great patient and a good kid, but I'm always happy to see a patient of mine get well and get well so quickly."

David smiles at the doctor as he takes his hand to shake it.

"Thank you, doctor. I'm grateful for everything you did for me, I'll never forget it. I won't miss this place, but I will sure miss you. I will definitely come back and visit from time to time, just so you can see how well I'm doing." David exclaims.

The doctor smiles as he lets go of David's hand.

"I'm holding you to that, David. I know you will walk again because you are very strong, ambitious and determined and you have the best physical therapist I've ever met, your mom."

The doctor looks up at Daphne as she smiles, a bit embarrassed to be put on the spot like that but welcomes the compliment. David and Niles also look at her and smile.

"Thank you, doctor for saying that. I don't know if I'm the best but I love what I do and I will do whatever it takes to help my son to walk again."

The doctor stand up, nods and smiles.

"I know you will." He says as he shakes Daphne's hand and then Niles' hand.

"Well, I better get going; I'm due in the ER. Talk to you soon and take care!" the doctor says as he rushes away.

Niles, Daphne and David watch him leave and then head to the exit. Once they get to the parking lot, David turns up the speed on his wheelchair as the races to the car.

Daphne starts to run after him.

"David, wait up! You don't know where the car is parked!'" she yells after him.

"He doesn't know we sold your car to buy the van with a wheelchair lift in it!" Niles yells to Daphne.

David stops the wheelchair and looks back at his mom as she approaches him, out of breath.

He has a confused look on his face.

"What are you talking about, mum? Didn't you and dad come in your car?" he asks.

Daphne looks down at her son.

"No, sweetheart. We sold my car and bought a van with a wheelchair lift in it. We decided it would be better and easier that way."

David nods and then smiles.

"I've always wanted a van, where is it?" he asks as he looks around the parking lot.

Daphne points to a white van in the parking lot straight ahead.

David looks where she is pointing as Niles finally catches up to them.

"So what do you think of the van, David?" Niles asks as he tries to catch his breath.

"I love it, dad. I can't wait to ride in it."

Niles grins at his son before speaking.

"What are we waiting for, then? Let's go!"

David grins back at his father as he pushes the wheelchair forward and flies toward the van.

Niles and Daphne laugh as they watch their son, then grab hands as they walk to the van together. They are both so happy to see their son well and happy. It will be good to have him home again, before school ends and they head off to England. It's going to be a great summer and hopefully before the summer is over, David will be walking again.

Niles and Daphne are lost in their thoughts as they finally approach the van where David is waiting patiently. Niles unlocks the door and activates the chair lift on the van. It slowly opens and lowers to the ground as Daphne helps David put his wheelchair on the lift, and once he is situated, she steps off as Niles flips the switch as the lift lifts David and his wheelchair into the van.

Once David is strapped in and comfortable, Daphne gets in her seat and puts on her seatbelt, as Niles heads out of the parking lot and onto the street towards home. The girls will be so happy to see David home when they get home from school. It will be the first time in weeks that they have all eaten dinner together with David home. Things are finally starting to get back to normal.
