A.N.: Another random Flangell fic. Hope you enjoy :-)
Jessica Angell was strong, independent woman. She was not to be told what to do. She had never understood what was so sweet about being rescued by men. It didn't mean that she was one of those ultra-feminists - she really understood the meaning of good manners, besides having a door held from time to time was nice. And getting flowers was nice. But...
"Don, you know I earn my own money. I can pay for myself."
"But I asked you out, I'm supposed to pay for you."
"Don, it's just coffeeduring lunch break."
"As you've said, it's just coffee, so you can let me pay."
"No, you don't understand."
"What's here to understand?"
"So...let's make a deal - you'll let me pay and I'll do my best to understand why you don't want to let me pay for your coffee?"
"Don, no. It's not just about that coffee. It's about a rule, an idea."
"Oh, really? So now we have a new dating rule? Yesterday you had nothing against me paying for your dinner."
"Because it's not the same. Yesterday it was a DATE, a real date, and it was okay. But today we just went out for coffee. It's not a date. And I can't let you pay for me all the time."
"Because...because I don't want to feel like I owed you something. And I feel as if I were using you." she blushed, obviously ashemed by her latest confession.
"Using? Jess, sweetheart" Don took her hands in his and looked deeply into her eyes. "you're not using me. I WANT to do this. You don't owe me anything because of that. Please, I don't want you to be uncomfortable with anything in this relationship. It's important for me. If it's so important, that fine, pay for your coffee."
"Thank you, Don. Please, don't be mad. I...I'm sorry."
"What are you sorry for? There's nothing to be sorry for."
"You look hurt. By me. I'm sorry."
"Jess, I may feel a little bit touched by the fact you, I don't know, don't trust me?, as much as I though, but it's nothing, really. I know we decided to take things slowly."
"For being so understanding."
"I'm doing by best." Don smiled, happy, that the awkwardness was gone, and kissed her genly. "Okay, so, let's pay."
"Yeah, let's pay."
They did as decided and went out of the coffee shop. Don put his arm around Jess' waist and hold her close. She had said he was understanding. The truth was, he still didn't understand whe she hadn't let him pay, but was determinated to assure her that there was nothing wrong in leting him pay for her. Even during their coffee breaks.
