Abigail Callaghan woke up in a hospital bed, feeling groggy, with an IV pump connected to her. "Eugh," she muttered incoherently, even to herself. She struggled to remember what happened. She entered the pod, something went wrong, and then... Nothing. Just darkness.
She tried to rise, when an unfamiliar voice said, "Hey, relax. You're safe." She slumped back down, feeling drained from the effort. "I'm Doctor Garcia. I'll be overseeing your recovery."
"Recovery from what?" She looked at herself, seeing nothing wrong, just feeling very cold.
"From your incident with the portals. You were in there for over a year. Its a wonder you didn't die," she said, pulling a clipboard from a desk set in a corner of the room. "By the way, there are some people here to see you." Doctor Garcia opened the door, and three of her father's students piled into the room, along with the school mascot.
"Abigail!" Grinning, Honey Lemon leapt up and hugged her, taking her breath away with the force of the squeeze.
"Le...mon...Stop...Air..." Abigail said it with a smile, genuinely glad to see them. When Honey Lemon finally let go, she looked at each of them, her grin growing wider with each face she saw. "Wasabi, Fred, Go Go, its great to see you all." She looked around them, trying to see if someone else was with them. "Where's Tadashi?"
There was an awkward silence in the room. A kid younger than the others stepped out from behind them. "Uh, hi. I'm Tadashi's younger brother, Hiro. He's... He's been hospitalized. He was trying to save Professor Callaghan when the building blew up on him." His shoulders slumped down more with each word uttered, looking ready to break down at the end.
"My-my father's dead?" She slumped back into her bed, hands covering her face as she heaved out a huge shuddering sigh.
"Nah, he tricked everyone into thinking he was dead and tried to kill Krei," Fred said casually.
"He what?" Now she was feeling panic set in. Had her dad killed Allistair? After all he'd done for both of them?
"Yes, but he was stopped," Wasabi said, shooting a glare at Fred.
Abigail closed her eyes, relief flooding through her. "That's good..." Suddenly, she remembered what Hiro had said about his older brother. "What about Tadashi? Is he going to be alright?"
"The doctors think so. He actually woke up this afternoon, so we were here to see him and we thought we'd pay you a visit," Hiro said, brightening up. "He's just down the hall, actually."
"Thanks, Hiro." Abigail smiled at the kid, a bit amazed at how much he looked like his older brother. Before more could be said, the nurses came in and shooed off the gang, leaving Abigail alone with her own thoughts.
It had been at least two years since she'd met Tadashi in person. They'd talked via video chats when she was off working on a project with Krei or on vacation on some beach, a courtesy of working for a benevolent billionaire who valued his employees, and had discussed robotics on a regular basis. She wondered if he had changed at all since she'd been in stasis. It wasn't long, however, before her thoughts were interrupted by a wave of sleepiness. Slowly, she drifted into a dream, one that involved a living white pillow flying her pod out of a strange debris-filled portal. It wasn't until the next morning that she woke up.
