LA County Road Testing Services

3:00 P.M

Darryl's POV

Here we are, the moment I've been dreaming about for years...my road test. Also known as the first stepping stone in gaining independence. To top everything off, I would have the house to myself for six months! Yes, I realize that having parties would be out of the question, especially if I wanted to prove my worth to Brian and Mia. But, small get-togethers with my main squad were allowed, which I'm grateful for. However, one of the biggest things I'm looking forward to is getting a decent night of sleep. I love my nephew Jack, but oh my damn, that kid has got some lungs on him.

Nevertheless, turning 17 has its perks. After school today, Brian dropped me off at the road testing services center. Not before giving me a few last words of encouragement.

"Good luck, little brother. I know you're going to pass that test with flying colors," He boasted cheerfully.

"Thanks, Bri. I'll be sure to make you proud," I assured him.

"You always do. After all, you're an O'Conner. Being a stellar driver is in our blood."

"That's true."

Then with one last deep breath, I bid Brian farewell and headed inside to begin my road test.

45 minutes later…

That 45 minutes went by faster than expected. Granted, that's probably because my clammy hands losing grip on the steering wheel was the only thing my anxious brain could focus on. The drive itself was alright. Traffic was heavier than I wanted it to be, especially on the highway. Why in the fuck did I pick a 3 pm time slot anyhow? Oh well, it's over now, and the time has come to claim my certificate.

"So, how'd I do?" I prompted my proctor.

The guy's face became twisted with glum.

Oh no.

"I'm sorry, Darryl. You failed," He stated with caution.

I feel the color drain from my face in embarrassment and feel my heart skip a beat.

"I-f-f-failed?" I stuttered in disbelief. "But how?"

"Well…"

The proctor briefly trails off as he flips through his grading booklet. "When changing lanes, you didn't look over your shoulder. You went under 55 on the highway and had a rolling stop at a stop sign."

Of course! Fucking complete stops!

"But if I have blind spot mirrors, why look over my shoulder? Isn't taking my eyes off the road dangerous? Also, I slowed down on the highway because of a traffic jam. If I had gone faster, I would have collided with the car in front of me!" I argued

"I'm sorry, Darryl. As a proctor, there are certain things I'm required to look for when testing someone. The DMV is extremely particular in determining what causes someone to pass or fail. I would reschedule another appointment with me so that next time, all these issues can be fixed, and I can pass you."

With that note, the proctor exits the car. After ensuring he was inside the building, I took the initiative to bang my head against the steering wheel while also unleashing a muffled scream.

I've ashamed the O'conner family. How am I going to break the news to Brian?!

O'Conner Household

5:00 P.M

Darryl's POV

Proceeding the events that were my shit show of a road test, I sorrowfully entered my house with the hope of isolating myself from the world. However, upon seeing Brian, Mia, and Jack all stationed on the living room couch, that idea went straight out the window.

"You're back. How'd it go?" Mia asked me eagerly.

I turned my frown into a fake fragile smile and decided to lie. "I passed!"

Brian and Mia instantly jump up to give me a bone-crushing hug.

"We're so proud of you!" Mia expressed in a high-pitched squeal.

"I knew you could do it," Brian added with equal enthusiasm.

My face hardened at hearing Brian and Mia gushing over me. Meanwhile, I was mentally beating myself up for lying to them. Yet again, the humiliation of falling was just too much to state out loud.

"Thanks. But it's not that big of a deal." I said casually.

My brother and sister-in-law release their grip and turn to glare at me with confusion.

"What are you talking about? This is a huge accomplishment, Darryl." Brian said

"Brian's right. You've reached a huge milestone, and it can't go uncelebrated," Mia mentioned.

My eyes widen. "Celebrate?"

"Yes. Go freshen up, and we'll treat you to dinner at that restaurant you've wanted to try."

"Cheesecake factory?" I uttered with a twinkle of glee in my eyes.

I really should tell them...but cheesecake, though! "That's not necessary. We can eat dinner here."

Mia waves away my concern. "Nonsense. You deserve this."

"B-But…"

Brian immediately cuts me off. "No buts, young man. We're going out, and that's final."

"O-Okay," I said before retreating upstairs to change clothes.

So much for trying to be honest. But how could I when they were both being that persistent? Guess the only thing left to do now is enjoy this expensive dinner while wallowing away in guilt.

Ugh. I could use a nap right about now.

O'Conner Household

1:30 p.m.

Third Person POV

A week or so later, Darryl was studying for final exams in his room that would take place on December 17th and 18th. While doing so, the younger blond sipped on his venti french vanilla iced coffee with cream; and blasted a pop radio station on a Bluetooth speaker.

Right as Darryl was transitioning from Chemistry to Psychology, a brief knock on his bedroom door causes him to lose focus briefly.

"It's open!" Darryl voiced out.

Then with the turn of the knob, Brian steps inside. "Hey bro, how's the studying going?"

"Just glorious," Darryl remarked in a sarcastic joking manner.

"As much as I want to believe that, there's no way you're enjoying…"

Brian advances towards his brother's desk to examine his studying materials. "Chemistry," he finished with a chuckle.

"Guilty as charged. What's up?" Darryl prompted.

"I have a surprise for you."

Darryl's brow rises. "You do?

"Yep. It's downstairs. Follow me!"

Darryl reluctantly follows Brian downstairs. But just before they head outside, The older blond comes to a halt.

"Close your eyes."

"Um, alright?"

After ensuring his brothers' eyes were closed, Brian guides him out onto the driveway.

"Just-a-few-more-steps-and-stop! You can look now."

On cue, Darryl's eyes fling open to see a cherry red Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo parked in front of the house.

"Is this mine?!" He exclaimed with a dropped jaw.

"Sure is. Surprise!" Brian confirmed while dropping the keys into Darryl's hand.

"Brian-I-"

"Consider this a late birthday present."

Darryl swallows the dry lump in his throat while he fidgets against the paved walkway. "Thank you, Brian. I love it!"

"Anything for you. I figured with Mia and me away; you could use some wheels to get around. I'm certain some things need to be fixed, But I figured you and I could work on it together during Christmas break."

"Of course. Can we take it for a spin?"

"By all means. Let's see how she handles the road."

Darryl wastes no time hopping into the front seat and starting the engine. Brian gets into the passenger seat with a cheeky smile.

"Alright, Darryl, shall we?"

"We shall. Let's hit the road!"

On that note, The O'Conner brothers took off driving into the heart of LA.

Toretto Household

5:30 p.m.

Third Person POV

Meanwhile, at the Toretto Household, Letty, Ramsey, Tej. Roman and Eric were partaking in a game of truth or dare while also enjoying a round of beers.

"Alright, Ramsey. Truth or dare?" Tej asked.

Ramsey lightly drums her fingers against the wooden table. "I'll do truth."

"Alright-"

Tej reaches for a card in a pile and soon after begins to read its contents.

"What is your go-to style of underwear?"

"Ha! Yeah, there's no way I'm letting you or Roman know that type of information" She chuckled.

Roman curses slightly under his breath before turning to the group. "C'mon Rams. I'll tell you what type I wear."

The remaining adults tried to hush Roman, but there was no use.

"Boxers. They're breathable and come in fashionable designs."

"T-Thank you for sharing that, Roman," Ramsey trailed off.

"Yeah, thanks for that, Pearce. Now, I'll never be able to get that image out of my head," Eric grunted as he took a sip of his beer."

"And since you didn't answer, you'll have to take a shot," Tej explained, motioning over to the full shot glasses.

"Gladly"

Ramsey grabs a glass and downs the contents with ease.

"Damn! You didn't even wince," Tej observed in astonishment.

Ramsey shrugs. "Probably because I'm use to the taste."

"But why exactly do we have shot glasses and beer?" Eric asked

"Just to make the game a little more interesting." Letty briefly explained.

Roman then pats Eric's shoulder. "It's called living on the wild side, little nobody. You should try it sometime," He finished with a teasing smile.

Eric rolls his eyes. "Haha. I haven't heard that one before."

"Alright, bad boy, it's your turn. Truth or-"

"Dare," Roman answered, instantly interrupting Tej.

"Alright"

Tej fishes for a dare card, and upon seeing the request, he grinned maliciously. "This is too good. Kiss the person to your left."

Roman feels the color drain from his face upon locking glances with Eric. "No way in hell!"

"C'mon, Roman. It's just one kiss. A daredevil like yourself can handle this." Letty laughed.

"Yeah, but it's Eric of all people!"

"Oh, I see what's going on here. You're just afraid that you might enjoy it." Eric said with a smug grin."

"I ain't afraid! I'll prove it to all of you!"

"Alright then. Lock those lips together with little nobody," Tej replied.

"I'm getting to it, Tej! I need to get my composure together."

"Boo! You're stalling! Kiss, Kiss, Kiss!" Ramsey began to chant.

Which then causes Letty and Tej to follow suit.

"Kiss, Kiss, Kiss!"

"It's okay, Roman. It's just one simple-"

Eric was cut off abruptly by Roman's lips being planted onto his in a brief kiss. After realizing Roman had pulled away, Eric brushed his fingers against the affected area. "Not bad, Pearce. That was a decent kiss."

Roman scoffed. "Of course, it was decent. Everything about me is amazing!"

The adults share a collective laugh before resuming their game for a few more hours.

Darryl's POV

So remember how I was feeling guilty about lying to Brian and Mia? Well, there's no need to worry now cause they both know. While out with Brian, I got pulled over by the police for going too slow. Upon being asked for my license, I broke down and explained I didn't have it. Luckily, my permit hasn't expired yet, so technically, I didn't do anything wrong. Brian, however, made sure to lecture me upon entering the house.

"Do you realize how fortunate we are that your permit hasn't expired?" Brian expressed stressfully.

"Yes, I do. I'm sorry for lying about passing my test. I was so embarrassed about failing cause I'm an O'Conner! I should have aced it with flying colors." I explained somberly.

"Darryl...I understand. But I'm not ashamed of you."

"You're not?"

"No. Not everyone passes their road test on the first attempt. But now, you know what to work on for next time. Maybe it's' something I can help with?"

"Well, the proctor said I failed because I didn't look over my shoulder when changing lanes, had a rolling stop, and went under 55 on the highway, which by the way was to prevent me from colliding with the car in front of me."

Brian tilts his head in confusion. "Didn't look over your shoulder? If you have blind spot mirrors, what difference does it make?"

I threw my hands up in frustration. "That's what I'm saying! But there's no arguing with the DMV."

"Screw them. You passed in my books. We'll schedule you another road test for next week to make it official, though"

"And I can still keep my Jeep?"

"Of course. I know I can be stern at times, but I'm not a monster."

"I know. It's just comforting to hear you say it."

I may have failed my road test on the first try, but I'm getting a second chance at redemption.

Watch out, world! Darryl O'Conner is cruising into 2016 with a drivers' license and a shiny red Jeep!
