Hello all. Yes, I'm still functioning. I apologize for not posting anything for the past 2 years. I know I kept you all waiting and I truly apologize for that.
Like many people, I've just been really busy. Allow me to explain.
I've been working on a sci-fi novel for the past 2 years as my debut book. I hammered in all my spare time into that and my illustrations. Within the past year, I've been querying literary agents but have had no success.
That's not all.
Since writing FanFiction doesn't pay my bills or put food on my table, I stopped writing on here because I had to prioritize what's truly important.
I also got really burnt out. I had no motivation to write my Fan Fictions. I would reread my fanfics to remind myself of the lore behind the stories I wrote and I just cringed the entire time. If I could rewrite everything from scratch to improve my stories again, then I would've but time isn't something I have to waste. In reality, if my work gets published then I wouldn't even be able to take back what I write. I'd have to live with it. Thus, I am not rebooting any more works and I won't make massive overhauls to my stories unless it's a retcon like what I did to the most recent chapters of "The Grim Herald".
Of course, this brought down my mood and motivation when I decided on this because my old stories didn't reflect my growth as a writer. I only want to give you all my best and my work from back then certainly fell short of my standards for myself. Those thoughts made the quality of my work go downhill and I felt the need to distance myself from Fan Fiction.
Next up, is an important note. It's been brought to my attention that some viewers want me to stop recommending music because it breaks up the flow of the story. I understand where they're coming from and I don't blame them for feeling that way. However, allow me to explain why I do that. It's because I had and still have readers who enjoy listening to the music that I listen to when I write certain scenes to get my blood pumping and my mind going. I originally started doing that because my readers wanted to know what I listened to. It was a way for my readers to connect to me outside of when I did Q livestreams. I recommend music to start and play at certain scenes to amplify the emotion and energy I'm putting into them and to ensure that some readers knew when the music wasn't needed for the scenes anymore, lol.
I am not forcing anyone to listen to the music I recommend. If you dislike it, then you can simply ignore those lines of music I recommend. If it's unbearable, then I can't force you to keep reading. How could I even do that in the first place? However, if there's just even one reader who enjoys listening to the music that I do for a specific scene, then I will keep recommending them.
With all that being said, I felt the urge to do some fanfic writing since I wanted to write but needed a break from my novel. Thus, as a token of appreciation and apology, I present to you a 26-page, 10,496 word chapter. I hope you'll enjoy.
Chapter 24
Temptations
Issei awoke the next morning feeling refreshed. He'd done enough moping. He was on vacation, for goodness' sake. Sure, his…harem…had expanded to 3, but that meant he needed to do all the better to make them happy. He never mentioned it to Azazel and the others at Grigori but he had certainly felt lonely during his time there. He was rarely around other people his age that he could relate to.
"Alright, what'll we do today?" Issei looked at Gabriel.
"I did want to try fishing. Dulio always told me that Japan was one of the best places to get seafood." Gabriel looked at the shops as they walked around.
'…Really mundane thing to do when vacationing in a place where you can do so much more…' Ddraig sighed. He sounded so disappointed that Issei couldn't help but pity him. Ddraig didn't say it but he missed eating food, drinking water, smelling air, and all the sensations that only flesh and bone could feel. It was an odd phenomenon they had, being mentally linked and all.
"Right, let's buy some poles, then."
After buying all the tools they needed, Issei took them to a local fishing spot.
Before Issei could even start, he found Rossweisse staring at him as he finally split off from Akeno, Vali, and Raynare.
"Um, can I help you, Rossweisse?"
"No, I'm fine, thank you." Rossweisse merely shook her head. Issei wasn't fooled since she was clearly sporting a sour look.
"Um, did I do something to you when we were in the Norse lands?" Issei was hoping Verum didn't attempt something while possessing him.
"Not at all. You were actually focused on Echidna. Are you feeling alright? You've been looking out of it since yesterday."
"Yeah, I was just dealing with some issues. I'm all good now, though."
Issei cast his line, waiting patiently for a bite. In that time, an awkward silence crept between the two.
"So…you and Vali trained together?"
"Yes, Vali and I were roommates. It was good while it lasted." Rossweisse then felt a tug at her line. She didn't look surprised by the sudden yank, unlike how Issei had imagined. Instead, she reared her arm back almost casually to reel in her catch with a victorious smile on her face.
"Wow! It's half my height!" Issei's eyes nearly popped out of his skull. That was no mean feat. He was 5'10.
"I haven't lost my touch! I used to fish at my grandmother's home often." Rossweisse put it away, excitedly casting her line again.
Issei felt a tugging on his collar before he realized that he was already in the air.
"What?!" He froze before his face hit the water.
"I'm so sorry!" Rossweisse tried to reel him back to shore.
'How on earth does a normal fishing line not snap when a human gets tossed with it?' Ddraig was flabbergasted by the impossible physics.
Issei wringed his shirt of its moisture when he climbed back to the pier.
"I'm so sorry! I'm so sorry!" Rossweisse kept bowing before realizing that Issei still had a hook in his collar.
"It's fine, heheh. I've had to endure worse." Issei plucked the hook from his clothes, though it managed to tangle around his pinky.
"Oh my. Has Rossweisse finally found herself a man? Ohohoho!" An aged voice chuckled.
"It's good to have young love at least once in your life." Another deep voice snickered.
The two saw a pair of old men walk out of an alley. One wore a white shirt over shorts and hefted a cane. Issei immediately knew who he was when he saw the eyepatch on his face.
As for the other, Issei smelled a whiff of ozone the moment he entered the area. That didn't narrow many conclusions down but the sheer aura this grey-haired well-dressed man emanated almost gave him the answer.
Issei tightened the grip he had on his pants. Odin and Zeus; two of the most fearsome deities, were in front of him. He felt all the hairs on his body stand up in alertness.
"If I'm not mistaken, some cultures say that fated couples have a single string attached to the other's pinky finger." Odin pointed at them.
Indeed, in Rossweisse's finger was wrapped in her line too.
"Lord Odin…" Rossweisse immediately returned to her professional demeanor, completely unbothered by what he said.
'Aw, too bad, Issei. Looks like this one doesn't care for you.' Ddraig chortled.
'Ddraig, you make it sound like I'll go after every pretty girl I see.' Issei actually sounded hurt that Ddraig would think so low of him.
'You're a perv and you know it.' Ddraig snickered.
'…. fair point.' Issei had to concede the point to the dragon.
"I've just wrapped up some business with the Alliance. I thought I heard some familiar voices, so I just came to check." Odin didn't present himself the way Issei expected.
"I also have business with the Red Dragon. May I have some of your time?" Zeus' voice was polite but his eyes made it clear that he wasn't allowing any refusals.
The two ventured to a quiet corner before Zeus spoke.
"You've done me a service, boy. Echidna has eluded my people for eons. You've dealt her some damage and stopped her scheme." Zeus crossed his arms.
Issei couldn't help but feel as if the king was scanning him for flaws.
"I did nothing and I wasn't alone, Lord Zeus. The credit goes to the others too."
"Indeed. I would like to extend an invitation of hospitality to you and your lovers on Olympus. Consider it a show of gratitude for your work. Hades must also meet with you for a minor affair. It was at Azazel's request."
Issei looked at him, perplexed. Why had Azazel done this without his consent or knowledge?
"This is all I came to do. I hope you'll consider visiting. I am many things, but a freeloader isn't one of them." Zeus, for one slight moment, gave Issei a small grin before disappearing in a flash of lighting. It was almost as if he already knew Issei's decision.
'Dramatic as always.' Ddraig scoffed.
'Think I should be worried?' Issei asked.
'I figure you'll be fine. Azazel did mention to me before that he'd help make preparations to prepare you for Verum. As for Hades, I'd say he's one of the few Olympians you can trust.' Ddraig didn't sound too confident until he mentioned Hades.
When Issei returned to the others, Odin sported a casual smile and exuded the aura of a man who didn't care too much about standing on ceremony.
"I see that one of my Valkyries is finally speaking with a man. I'll tell your grandma." Odin stroked his beard.
"Please refrain, Lord Odin. More importantly, is there something the matter?" Rossweisse asked.
"Why, I've secured more trade agreements with the Shinto. Also, I've got a job update for you, Rossweisse. Unpack your things cus' you're staying in Kuoh for a while." Odin snickered.
Rossweisse paled.
"D-D-D-D-Do you mean I'm f-f-f-f-f-f-f-fired?" She stuttered so much that Issei thought she was going into shock.
Odin sighed.
"This is why people kept making fun of you. You take everything way too seriously. I'm having you join the team we're organizing there: Team DxD. There're still troublemakers running around and I know Asgard has a role to play. I'm trusting that you'll be of help to the Alliance."
"Lord Odin, would it not be better to―" Before Rossweisse could start lecturing, Odin cut her off with a hand.
"If you're gonna start lecturing me again, then stop. This is why you're known as 'Singled Mingle'. You scare all the boys away." Odin sighed.
The insult was so strong that even Issei and Ddraig gasped. They could imagine it now: Rossweisse dancing by herself at a party, waiting for a date.
Rossweisse gasped. Her face even drained to match her silver hair.
"WHY DOES EVERYONE KEEP CALLING ME THAT?! IS IT A CRIME TO PREPARE MY CAREER FIRST?!" She growled.
"Rossweisse, this is looking really sad, dear. I kept telling you to get a boyfriend in college. Your grandma said the same thing. Even Loki felt bad and didn't pick on you. Of all people, Loki…" Odin only looked at Rossweisse with pity. He then noticed Issei staring at the sad display.
"Yeah, she's gonna be like this for a while. Any who, I just came to relay orders to my assistant/secretary. Zeus insisted on tagging along when I mentioned where I was going." Odin stroked his beard whilst trying to ignore Rossweisse's sulking.
"Lord Odin, has there been any news on the Khaos Brigade?" Issei asked.
Odin looked as if he was going to respond but he glanced at Vali and shut his mouth.
"No, not yet. We'll let you know if we find out anything else. We're still trying to find Echidna so perhaps we'll learn more then. Thanks to you, she left a literal trail." Odin smiled, as if to reassure him.
"I understand, thank you."
"So, I heard you're being forced on sabbatical. Planning to shack up with your ladies?" Odin gave him a lecherous grin.
Issei, for a moment, imagined that activity before he stopped himself.
"N-No…" He cleared his throat.
"You're a teen; it's expected. Think you're the only horny one? Pfft! I'll bet your ladies are feeling the urges too, son. Just don't forget to practice safety if your pull-out game is weak." Odin's grin never faded.
Issei knew the old perv was just messing with him, but he had to admit, he was getting to him.
"Jokes aside, consummating relationships is a step everyone takes if they wanna get to the next level. There're depths that go beyond carnal desires, son. Happiness goes past sex." Odin's eyes flashed a serious glint.
"Lord Odin…" Issei figured the god was old enough to know about Verum.
"Yes, I'm talking about that parasite in your mind, boy. He almost thought with his crotch more than his brain. I've also seen your predecessors go down his path. If you want to beat Verum, then love is your greatest weapon. It can do things that not even gods can. Love will ground you and keep you true." Odin waved as he left through a magic circle.
Issei wasn't sure whether to feel encouraged or worried. So many people despised Verum yet tried to inspire him. Issei sighed. His luck really did suck to get saddled with this.
"We've managed to catch a full basket. Shall we head back and cook?" Gabriel walked over and showed off her spoils of war.
Issei reckoned they might as well go to the fish market and sell their winnings with all they had. Then a thought occurred to him.
'Should…should I call her auntie?' Issei wondered to himself.
'Angels don't have DNA like that. There's no biological relations between siblings like with humans. It's just formality and religious customs that make them call each other that. Besides…' Ddraig chortled to himself.
"Are you okay, Issei? You're staring off into space." Gabriel leaned closer.
Issei couldn't help but blush when she neared. Wow, was she beautiful. She almost took his breath away. Yet again, he noticed that she seemed to glow in the sunlight, as if it bent to follow her just to be near her.
"I-I'm fine. Yeah, let's start cooking." Issei rushed past her to try and calm down.
When everyone finished eating their catches at a park, Issei decided to break Zeus' offer to the others.
"Hm…" Akeno pursed her lips.
"What?" Issei knew that the Greek gods didn't have very good reputations. They weren't all debaucherous or anything but they tended to have short tempers.
"If we hang around Hestia, Athena, and Hades, we're okay but the others can be difficult." Vali, being the most traveled, chimed in.
"How so?"
"Aphrodite likes to stir up gossip, Hermes can't sit still, Artemis is difficult, and so on and on." Vali groaned as if she were recalling experiences.
"Problem is, Issei has to go see Hades so the Olympians will feel insulted if we don't accept. Hm, what to do…" Akeno said.
"Uncle Azazel directly asked Hades for help. I can't turn that down. If you all aren't comfortable with it, then you don't have to come with me." Issei wanted to bring his 3 lovers along but understood their worries.
"Then shall I join you? I am also an emissary for Michael. If things get violent, then I'll gladly oblige in your defense." Gabriel's grey eyes flashed a dangerous glint.
Issei knew of her reputation. She was second only to Michael in battle strength and that was no simple fact.
"Now, hold on, no one said anything about letting you go alone. Of course, we're going." Vali cut him off before he could finalize the plan.
"Alright, it's a plan, then. We'll leave tomorrow." Gabriel sipped her tea.
"But what about your tour?" Raynare asked from across the table.
"I can visit Japan whenever I have free time. Besides, this is quite important." Gabriel shrugged.

Later that night, Issei sat outside and stared at the starry sky to appreciate its simple beauty.
"You can't get a view like this from Heaven." Gabriel walked up behind him.
Once again, Issei's breath was stolen from him. She had tied her hair into a bun and adorned herself in a light-blue yukata that hugged her figure nicely.
"May I join you?" She politely asked.
Issei scooted over and turned his gaze from her.
'I hate you, hormones.' Issei liked to think of himself as a very focused guy, not one to ogle women like a drooling beast. Being around all the Fallen Angels who fell due to lust tended to desensitize people. In his case, Issei absolutely didn't want to be seen as a pervert. Even so, he was a young man and he had instincts. He was learning to stop beating himself up for reacting.
"When I saw you as a child, I never thought you'd turn out like this." Gabriel chuckled.
"Like this?" Issei hoped she meant it positively.
"Yes, you worry a lot. I've only ever seen Michael worry as much as you do. Ahahaha!" Gabriel stifled her laughter.
"Sorry if I'm such a wet blanket."
"Not at all. I can see that you care immensely for others. One thing my father always said to me is that the people who worry about their impact on others are often the thoughtful and kind. Still, you're gonna need a therapist if you keep worrying all the time." Gabriel playfully pointed a finger at him.
"Yeah, I'm trying to get better."
"I can see that. I figure you keep staring off into space because you're talking to Ddraig. Which reminds me, hello Ddraig." Gabriel looked at Issei's left arm.
"Hello, Gabriel. I'm glad that you're well." Ddraig stunned Issei. When could he speak so formally and politely?
"Gabriel was the closest angel I could consider a friend before the War broke out." Ddraig likely sensed his shock and growled at him.
"Yes, I can't say we were good friends but at least you never tried to kill me." Gabriel grinned. "So, I take it that you two have been getting along well. This is the fastest I've ever seen a Red Dragon Emperor progress in power. Most are well into their 20s and 30s before they unlock as many abilities and reach such limits."
"Well, we do get along." Ddraig chuckled.
"True. If I could, I'd release Ddraig." Issei gently rubbed his hand.
"With a partner like him, I'm actually quite content to stay like this." Ddraig returned the sentiment.
"Ufufufu. You two are cute." Gabriel giggled.
Issei turned red and he figured Ddraig was doing the same. Hearing her giggle and getting called cute by such a beauty certainly wasn't expected. Most ladies at Grigori looked at him as if he didn't even register on their radar.
"So, if all this goes away and peace returns, will you return to a normal life?" Gabriel returned to a more serious demeanor.
"I'd like to try but I'm not sure how. If this keeps up, I won't graduate." Issei cheekily grinned.
"And why do you want to live a normal life?" Gabriel continued.
Issei returned to looking at the sky.
"I wanted to see what my parents saw. They loved the normal life, despite being a dragon and ageless witch. If you looked at them from afar, you'd have thought they were regular people. I want to know what that's like. Sometimes, I even wonder what it would've been like if we'd all been human. I don't think regular humans realize how good they've got it. They take so much for granted while so many of us supernaturals would give it all up to be in their shoes. Grass is greener on the other side, I guess. I think I'm just curious as to what it's like and it helps me feel closer to my parents."
Issei looked at Gabriel curiously when he felt her hand on his back.
"I met your parents once. You know what they said to me? That their greatest pride was their little boy, who looked at life with so much wonder. I think that it wasn't just the lifestyle that made them so happy; it was also you." Gabriel warmly smiled.
Issei was left speechless. He hadn't ever expected such words from an archangel, nor had he expected her to know his parents. Still, it warmed him to the bone to know that was how his parents felt. He'd spent such little time with them.
"Well, it's getting late and we've got some traveling to do tomorrow. Be careful not to get sick out here. Good night, Issei." Gabriel stood up.
"Good night and thank you, Madam Gabriel."
"Please don't call me Madam. Just call me Gabriel." The mesmerizing Archangel promptly left Issei alone again, his spirits uplifted.
(Genshin Impact OST: Kitsune's Mask. End Song.)
The next morning, Issei and his group teleported to the Greek Underworld. They landed right in front of the River Styx. This was actually Issei's first time seeing it since Azazel never let him stray too far from the Mortal Realm.
The River Styx was a gigantic stream of water that was pure black. Issei could see streaks of different colors pass through it, like oil in water. When he continued to stare at it, he felt the urge to gasp. He could see souls moving through it. Their faces wailed in silence as they were dragged away by the current.
"Don't slip. You don't wanna touch it." Gabriel held him back instinctively.
Issei knew the stories. Mortals who bathed in the river became invulnerable except for one spot on their body.
"Those are the souls of all who sought invincibility and failed." A voice hoisted everyone's attention away.
There was an old gaunt man standing by a wooden boat. He wore black robes with a golden sash around his waist. Tied to it was a burlap sack that looked heavy yet made no sound.
"Lady Gabriel." The Old Man regarded the Archangel.
"It's nice to finally meet you, Charon." Gabriel bowed.
Everyone followed her lead. The atmosphere he exuded made it clear that he was owed respect. He was so much more than a ferryman and his presence made sure everyone knew that.
"Lord Hades has been waiting for you. Climb aboard." Charon stepped aside for his new passengers.
Issei really didn't want to annoy him so he gave him an Obol coin that he carried. Azazel made sure he was always well-funded and Japanese Yen wasn't universal currency.
As Charon ferried the crew across the River Styx, Issei felt his skin tingle. It was as if the spirits of the dead were trying to get his attention.
"Unsettling, isn't it, boy?" Charon didn't sound taunting, but rather calculating. He sounded like a teacher wondering what his student thought.
"Can't help it. Seeing a dead body is one thing, a soul is another."
"This river stands as proof that not all quests for strength are meant to be undertaken." Charon then resumed his silence. Issei had his back turned but he felt as if it wasn't him that the ferryman was talking to.
Issei had to admit, this sight would humble the most stuck-up brat. He could just feel the suffering radiating from the onyx waters below. He couldn't even look at it. Normally, he doubted this would've bothered him but there was such a primordial power in this place that it ignored all his bravery and brought out the terror of a child from within him.
He was glad to quickly be off the ferry and at the gates of Hades' Palace. It was a black and grey structure that had precious metals and gems melted into its walls. It was like staring at rainbow layered walls of onyx.
"Enter." A voice boomed. Chains clinked and clanked as the gates opened alone.
Issei took note of the ghostly blue spirits adorned in black armor and weapons. Just behind the walls of the gates stood a massive black dog with 3 heads. Unlike the offspring Issei had fought before, this Cerberus was several times larger and had glowing red, green, and white eyes. Its right head followed him as he trekked along.
Before long, the crew reached Hades Throne Room. It was a large black room with giant empty windows that allowed one to see outside. Torches of blue and white flames floated in midair and at the end of the room, sat Hades and his wife: Persephone.
Issei had seen Hades before and he still looked as imposing as he had then. The Greek god had pale skin and his hair was slicked back. His robes were dark navy and cascaded into black, accented by the golden bands and rings on his arms and fingers. When Hades looked at him with his piercing white eyes, Issei felt as if all the Underworld were staring into his soul from his simple black throne.
Persephone was the sole contrast to the room. Her caramel-brown hair flowed like wheat down her back. Her skin was vibrant like golden rays of the sun and went well with her jade-green dress. Her presence brought life to this room and kept Issei from shivering.
"Welcome, my guests. Please, sit." Hades deep booming voice was on par with Zeus', perhaps even more so, actually.
Chairs of black onyx and gems rose from the ground for everyone.
"I summoned you here because Azazel requested that I use my powers to keep Verum asleep until you are ready." Hades, for a brief moment, cracked a small grin.
"May I ask what he paid for in exchange, Lord Hades?" Issei kept his head low.
If what Hades said was true, then he didn't want Azazel suffering any consequences.
"I will help you on a few conditions. The one that concerns you is that you must prove yourself to me. Many of your predecessors passed through my domain; all of them were judged by me. I did not like what I saw. Therefore, I will have you commit to a series of tests. It will occur when I want it to and I will not tell you how or when. Should you pass, I will seal Verum until you're ready to confront him. If outside forces break that seal, then that's on you."
Issei was disliking his time here with every second.
"And the other conditions?" Issei asked.
Hades stared at him, clearly debating what to tell him.
"Your uncle will capture or kill any creatures poached from my realm. Traitors will suffer the same fate. The other conditions are between us."
Issei ceased his questions.
"Persephone, would you show the rest of our guests around the Palace, please?" Hades turned to his wife.
"Of course." Persephone gestured for the ladies to follow her.
Issei wanted to scream for them not to leave him alone with Hades but knew it would make him look like a fool. He already felt like a wimp. This was completely uncharacteristic of him.
'Don't feel bad, Partner. I assure you, it's common sense to fear Hades. The Greek Underworld also has the power to make you afraid, regardless of how brave you are. It takes a lot to be calm here.' Even Ddraig sounded uncomfortable.
'Aren't you stronger than Hades?' Issei asked.
'The details of our strength have always been murky. Hades always avoided showing all his power so who knows if he's stronger or weaker. That ranking was never official and I don't want you to be the one to find out the real answer.' Ddraig growled.
Hades stepped toward Issei and gestured toward the window. The two peered over a dry field of sand. Wind carried dust and grains across the fields. Issei could see people crawling and dredging through the desert. It dawned on him that this was the Asphodel Field.
"What do you see?"
"A desert."
"No, not the terrain. What do you see with your mind? What do you think?"
Issei figured this was a test. Should he lie? Would that hurt him?
"I see a sad place. People who didn't live good lives or bad ones get sent here. I find it unfair that some people who weren't saints have to roam this place."
"And why is that? They didn't try to be good people. They didn't become sinners, either. Why shouldn't they be here?" Hades asked.
"Not everyone gets the chance, though. I mean, with how the Mortal Realm is, a lot of people are just trying to live their lives without causing trouble. Isn't that good enough?" Issei bit his lip, fearing he'd said too much.
Hades shifted his gaze back to the Fields.
"I see. I noticed the entire time we spoke that your…lovers kept their eyes on you. How did you come by to have such a network of relations?" Hades' tone sounded judgmental and stern.
'That look is really rich coming from a Greek god.' Issei hissed.
Issei gave a brief summary of all the events that led to this moment.
"I see. In my realm, gods took many mortals without consent. I, myself, kidnapped my wife after getting consent. Perhaps I cannot judge at all. However, it would do you good not to let yourself get out of control. I'm sure tales of my homeland should suffice as a warning for men who become too lustful."
Issei felt a great pang of anger rush through him. He was getting really tired of people judging him and warning him to behave. He hadn't had any designs to be a deviant or arrogant. What had he done to earn all this treatment?
"Do not misunderstand me. I am not judging your relations to those girls. I merely offer a friendly reminder. My brother sired many children and too many suffered grisly fates." Hades chuckled but it made Issei prefer the sound of gunfire.
Hades seated himself back on his throne.
"Today was merely a formality. I wanted to talk with you as a greeting. I also warn you to behave around my brethren. Many of them can still be quite…temperamental. Now, Zeus has invited you to Olympus, so you should depart. I admit, my realm is uninviting. I will summon you back here once I've decided to take action in regards to your tests."
As soon as Hades said that, Persephone returned with the rest of Issei's group.
"I shall send you to Olympus. I will summon you again when the time is right. Until then." Hades didn't move a finger as Issei and the ladies were instantly teleported to his brother's realm…all except for Gabriel.
"So, I guess we still have business?"
"Indeed, Archangel. Was that silver-haired girl his descendant?"
"Yes…she is."
"And she has no designs for the boy? No words that would lead to him?"
"None that I know of. I know Azazel. He wouldn't have ever allowed her to do harm to the boy. He loves Issei and Vali as if they were his own flesh and blood. I doubt he'd be fooled by Vali if she was faking." Gabriel narrowed her eyes.
"Why favor those children? What have they done to earn such praise?" Hades didn't sound accusational, rather curious instead.
"The boy has proven honorable. He rescued a nun that was to be exploited for…pleasure…and her Sacred Gear. He doesn't discriminate against others. He has fought hard with no regard for personal gain."
"I saw his fight with Riser Phenex. Yes, his main motivation was heroic. However, I've seen that glint in his eyes before, a fire that many heroic people had that became a ravenous flame."
"I understand your worries, Lord Hades, but the boy clearly isn't like Verum." Gabriel sighed.
"That's not truly what troubles me. The boy isn't arrogant and likely won't ever be for now. What worries me is his fear. His fear for his loved ones can be turned against him. Heroes have gone down horrid paths to save or avenge their loved ones. I strongly recommend he be trained for those times. The boy must be prepared if he is to resist Verum's temptations."
"We all know." Gabriel nodded.
"By many standards, Verum is trivial but his many spells and secrets could pose a threat when combined with the boy's physical abilities. He has already reached a level that drove away Echidna, of all people. It is no small feat to defeat the mother of all Greek monsters." Hades rumbled.
"As for that girl, I also know that shine in her eyes. She hides it well, but I feel that she hungers for thrills. She may not seek out battle but she relishes a good one. Keep an eye on her, Gabriel. Those children may be hiding things that nobody knows about." Hades sternly warned her like how a coworker would.
"I'll do so when I can."
"I have lived for eons and this is the first time the Dragon Emperors have fallen in love. We have unpredictable times ahead and we'd best prepare for them. Let the stones fall where they may but we cannot afford to be complacent either. Now, I end our discussion." Hades reclined in his throne as Gabriel disappeared into light.
He stared at the ceiling after she left, drumming his fingers on his armrest.
"Now then, how shall I see what you're made of, Issei Hyoudou?"
Olympus was what many expected it to look like. It was a massive citadel of white marble with open roads leading here and there. Temples were scattered across the mountain, all of them leading up to a singular structure where the 12 Olympians were to be seated. Issei even took note of the various floating temples that floated around the mountain, all of them connected by bridges of stone.
Issei felt that Olympus was a heavenly reflection of the grim Underworld in a poetic sense. Everything was separate yet connected, unlike Hades' realm where everything was next to each other but couldn't be more different.
"Welcome to Olympus, my dear guests." Zeus stepped forward at the gates. This time, he was dressed in a white robe.
"We are honored to be here, Lord Zeus." Gabriel bowed with her entourage.
"Come, allow me to show you around."
Olympus' city was like a Greek town but only more extravagant. Issei saw nereids and satyrs playing music and dancing. He could scarcely count all the different species living. Many gods were drinking and eating. It was like a nonstop festival here.
"I have arranged for a guide to show you around Greece once you've toured Olympus. Sadly, I cannot personally show you around and the others have their own affairs. Still, I presume the company I've prepared for you will meet your standards." Zeus stopped in front of a new person.
Issei literally froze, minus the ice, in place when his gaze befell the woman in front of him. He had to blink when he saw her. Her form shifted almost every time he saw her. She looked like Akeno, then Vali, then Raynare, then Gabriel, then Rossweisse. All of a sudden, she giggled and her form seemed to settle on one final appearance.
The Woman's hair turned a pale pink and long. Her eyes became turquoise like the sea and her dress tightened into a pink and white color, complete with a black sash. Her skin was fair and pale like a sunlit cloud and her very gaze made Issei feel things.
"My apologies. Whenever men see me, my form tends to shift in their eyes till they adjust. Don't blame him. Anyways, my name is Aphrodite." Said goddess noticed all the glares Issei's harem was giving him.
He looked like a bedazzled insect staring at a light.
"Lady Aphrodite, do forgive our company." Akeno gently shook Issei to get him to stop staring.
"Oh, don't worry. All males do that when they see me. Many ladies do too. Now, please follow me. I'd like to show you to your rooms." Aphrodite giggled as she pointed at her area of Olympus.
It was a temple hewn with soft pink light and a rosy atmosphere. It was detached from the main mountain so it certainly felt more private.
"This is my home on Olympus. Of course, I don't let anyone see what happens here, not even Zeus. I'd hate for my privacy to be broken by all those stares." Aphrodite playfully smirked.
Issei avoided all eye contact with her while listening. He wasn't sure what was going on but it felt as if she could sense the vibes everyone was giving off. He couldn't explain all of her seemingly random talk. She couldn't be psychic…right?
"How cute." She muttered to herself when Issei looked away whenever she turned in his direction.
Akeno bit her bottom lip. She was hating this.
"Night will be here soon and that means nighttime parties. Zeus has arranged for a feast to welcome your arrival here; a little pre-party party. All pantheons are taking turns hosting parties. I think we'll be hosting another one in a month or two." Aphrodite gasped and turned around with a smile, as if enraptured by a thought.
"That means we've gotta get you into outfits. But first, let's take a nice long bath." She then turned to Issei.
"I've already arranged your quarters too." She led him away from the group and showed him to a building.
It was a giant room with a giant bed draped in red silken sheets. The curtained window gave a view of Greece below, the mortal realm of Greece, to be exact. Issei could smell a pleasant vanilla permeate through the air as he took the room's atmosphere in. He then peered through a curtain to the other room.
"Private bath, dear. I make sure all my guests' rooms have one. Of course, there are public ones but you'd be better in yours since there're no other men here at this time. Enjoy." Aphrodite grinned as she left.
When Issei was alone, Ddraig finally spoke.
"She still gives me the creeps. You guard your crotch, boy."
"Huh?!"
"I don't think she's gonna go after you but…meh, give yourself a few more years and she might."
"So…she's frivolous?" Issei didn't want to insult her and speak openly.
"She's an intense romantic and horrifically flirtatious when she sets her sights on someone. If you spark any romantic interest from her, she'll come down on you like a pack of hungry wolves eyeing steak. Of course, she only has one relationship at a time and she's no harlot, but still…" Ddraig grimaced in his mind.
"She doesn't seem that bad…"
"I've spent time with her, boy and she sticks with you till she's got you figured out. She could make Akeno's flirting look like child's play. Either she leaves you alone or you go crazy and jump her… Look, no matter what, you mash square, not circle, got it?!"
Issei huffed. What had he gotten himself into? And what was Draig even referencing?
While Issei was alone, Aphrodite led the other women into the public baths.
"My, oh my, I can see why men drool over all of you. Ufufu! Such gifted figures! I might have to request you all to model for my magazine." Aphrodite stretched in the square bath.
Akeno looked at the transparent ceiling and walls with empty segments. Could no one truly see them?
"Don't fret, dear. I have the most powerful enchantments surrounding my home. No one can see your bare body without your consent."
"O-Oh, I see." Akeno breathed a sigh of relief. Her body was for Issei to see alone; no other man was allowed to.
"So, Gabriel, any chances to get with anyone since we last met? You were a big hit the last time I hosted a party. Hermes looked quite smitten with you." Aphrodite grinned.
"W-Well, I haven't had time. Since I handle therapy, it's been kinda hard." Gabriel sighed.
"Hm…that's too bad. Maybe that'll all change soon, eh?" Aphrodite smirked as if she knew something the Archangel didn't. She then turned to the other young ladies.
"And you young girls, my oh my, I never thought I'd see a harem like yours. All of you working together? That's not common around these parts. I guess anime helps, eh?"
Akeno paled. Aphrodite wasn't exactly wrong. Anime certainly drove the harem craze around.
"So, all jokes aside, what do you see in him? It's been a few decades since we had a Red Dragon Emperor in Greece."
"Er, well…he's honest. He doesn't shy away from apologizing and he's always worrying if he's doing the right thing." Raynare said. Despite all the troubles and time lost, Issei never took the harem situation lightly.
"Hardworking. He'll work his butt off for something he believes in." Vali chimed in. When he saved Shuri Himejima, she nearly lost her mind with worry.
"And kind. He'd give his life if meant saving someone. He's special." Akeno finished. She could never forget how much he'd wept out of guilt.
"I see, I see. He's your stock hero. That's actually a good thing in real life." Aphrodite, for a moment, shed her bubbly exterior when Akeno looked into her eyes.
Gabriel stared at her, as if on guard. That scared Akeno. She hated to admit it, but Aphrodite's body, her demeanor, and her very aura outclassed her own. Vali and Raynare rivaled herself but Aphrodite…Akeno knew she couldn't compete in charm and looks. She got the feeling that it wasn't because she was a goddess. She was just that above par as a woman. What if she went after Issei?
"So, what's got you inviting us all into the bath?" Gabriel broke the silence.
"Oh, I wanted a girl chat. It's been so long since I've had guests. Artemis can be so stiff and Athena's always on the move. Hera's always making sure Zeus isn't causing trouble. Demeter's off…weeding or weeping, or something. I just wanted some time with my fellow ladies."
"With all due respect, Lady Aphrodite, but won't Lord Hephaestus take issue with us being here?" Vali asked.
"Oh, right. Well, I need to clear that up. Y'see, Hephaestus and I never married. That was just a story mortals came up with. As for Ares, we never dated. That muscle-brain wasn't to my tastes. By the time I'd heard all those tales, mortals had already spun so many tales that I just gave up correcting them. I figured I'd let those stories inspire them. But! That Helen and Paris of Troy thing was a cheap, lying, scandal! You wouldn't believe all the glares I got when I came home!" Aphrodite sighed.
Gabriel knew most of those stories were false. The ones with her allure and love were not.
Aphrodite then sighed again when she saw the time.
"Well, I've prepared clothes for you all. I tried to match them to you. I hope you like them!"
Once everyone had bathed and dressed, they all gathered on Mount Olympus to feast.
Issei looked around at the various Greek deities and creatures and marveled at the varied sight.
"Tonight, we celebrate the visit of our guests. Tonight, we thank them for driving off Echidna, one of our sworn enemies. Let us feast, drink, and dance in commemoration of the new allies we've gained. May days like these continue as we strive for an eternal peace with our neighbors. Cheers!" Zeus' voice thundered as he raised a glass.
And with that, the festivities began. Issei had eaten so much food that he could've sworn he had another stomach. When he finally found Akeno, he stopped. Time stood still for him when he laid eyes on her. Just when he thought Aphrodite was enchanting, Issei realized that Akeno was mesmerizing, maybe even maddening.
She was dressed in a white Greek dress with golden necklaces draped around her neck. Her hair had been braided and draped over her shoulder. If he didn't know her, Issei would've assumed she were also a goddess.
"A-Ash-Agh-Asheno…" Issei tripped over his words, trying to collect himself.
"Hm, I thought you'd be dressed in a Chiton. Ufufufu!" Akeno giggled.
"Yeah, a little too airy for me. I like my default clothes more." Issei scratched his heard awkwardly.
"Still, what do you think?" Akeno spun around, allowing Issei to have a full view of how well her dress hugged her gifted figure. He resisted the urge to drool.
"Breathtaking…" Issei wheezed. Even he was taken aback with his behavior. He rarely acted like this.
'I knew you were a perv.' Ddraig chortled.
"I'm glad. The rest of us were worried what you'd think."
Vali, Raynare, Rossweisse, and Gabriel all walked over, sporting similar attire but with varying designs and colors.
Issei forced all of his willpower to his nethers. He would not allow anyone to see his junior stand at attention.
"So, how do we look?" Vali leaned forward daringly. Her bust hovered so close to him that Issei could almost feel their gravity.
'No! No! NO! NOOO! CALM YOURSELF, JUNIOR!' Issei cried to himself. He'd nearly seen a slip of pink from her bust.
"You okay?" Raynare advanced. Issei felt himself sweat when he realized that one wrong wind would show him everything. His lovers were truly testing his willpower.
"Yep. Just fine." Issei grimaced.
"Should I get you a drink?" Rossweisse looked around in her lilac dress.
"And why're you hunched over? Is something upsetting your stomach?" Gabriel put a hand on his shoulder. Issei didn't even want to look at her in her black dress for too long or he'd stay hunched over.
"Lady Gabriel, could we speak for a moment." Some random goddess dragged her away.
One by one, Issei's party was dragged off.
"I see that you too aren't immune to the charms of women." A voice chuckled from behind him.
Issei turned to look at Zeus after he had to stop hunching.
"Lord Zeus." He bowed.
"From the way Azazel spoke of you, I didn't think you would have many lovers."
"Just the 3." Issei replied.
"Having 3 is already plenty. It took me a long time to understand that."
Issei withheld the urge to roll his eyes. Not another lecture incoming.
"So, how did it feel to have all that power when you fought Echidna?"
"Uncomfortable yet exhilarating, if that makes any sense." Issei replied.
"Be careful, boy. I feel that Echidna was only the beginning. There are many in my domain that are wary of you, thanks to the crimes of your predecessors." Zeus sipped some nectar from his golden goblet.
"I assure you, Lord Zeus, I have no intentions on causing trouble."
"The incident at the Phenex Compound says otherwise." Zeus chuckled.
"That was to save my friends." Issei turned red from embarrassment.
"Dear boy, I don't fault you for that. I might've done the same thing. Still, I hope that tonight shows you that people can change. I'm sure you've heard the tales of my pantheon?"
"Many, Lord Zeus."
"While mortals embellished many tales, they all had some truth to them. Some were completely unadulterated. It has been my wish to redeem my pantheon's hearts and reputation. Perhaps I should've followed Hades' lead." Zeus looked around, a forlorn expression on his face.
Issei had to wonder what his point was.
"My apologies. It's just that seeing you reminds me of a few of my sons when they were young, particularly Hermes. He was always nervous about the fallout of his actions when they mattered, for good and bad. I will be watching you with great interest, young Issei." Zeus took another sip of his nectar before walking away to converse with his fellow gods.
Issei was left puzzled by the encounter. There hadn't really been a point to the conversation, was there? Then again, he got to see a lighter side to the King of Olympus.
"Sorry about that. He was a little tipsy. Despite how solemn he's acting tonight, my father is very happy. It's been a longtime dream of his that Greece make headway in recovering its reputation. The Alliance is the first step to that." A man walked over and Issei instantly knew who he was.
The man, no, the god had protruding cheekbones as if they were swollen. His skin was darkened, his hair greying, and he had a metal cast around his left leg. However, his beard was cleanly trimmed and his body was stocky and strong. This was Hephaestus, the greatest smith in all of Greece.
"Might I trouble you for a moment, young Issei?"
"How can I help, Lord Hephaestus?"
"I would like to examine that left arm of yours. You see, I never had the chance to personally inspect God's work."
Issei decided not to offend him and summoned the Boosted Gear. Instantly, many eyes fell on him.
"I see…marvelous craftsmanship. The spells and seals upon it are so binding that I doubt even I could break it. God was not a warrior like my father, but he was certainly the greatest maker I've ever seen." Hephaestus' stern expression had melted to one of begrudging respect.
"Hello, Hephaestus." Ddraig muttered.
"Hello, Ddraig. Keeping out of trouble, I presume?"
"With this host? No. Trouble always finds him." Ddraig snickered.
"I merely came by to see the Red Dragon Emperor with my own eyes and the gauntlet you were put in. I'll take my leave now." Hephaestus turned away but stopped.
Yet again, someone was walking over and Issei instantly felt anger rousing from within him. A young man, tall, muscular like a bodybuilder, was heading toward Issei. He wore a red chiton and had armor adorning him. His hair was dark red like blood and his gaze was fierce and vicious.
'On your guard, Issei. That's Ares. Don't get suckered in by his goading. You aren't ready to fight a god.' Ddraig's tone had dropped to deadly seriousness and disgust.
"Hello, boy. I am Ares." The god of War reached out to shake his hand.
The moment they shook, Ares made an uncomfortably tight grip around his hand.
"Strong grip. I like that." Ares smirked.
"You flatter me, Lord Ares." Issei bowed.
"When I heard those crows had attained the Red Dragon, I thought about visiting but you didn't look ready. Your performance at the Phenex Compound left quite an impression. Tell me, how do you feel about a bout with me? Surely, I could teach you a thing or two." Ares words were friendly but his eyes were piercing, like arrows notched for murder at any moment.
"I am grateful, Lord Ares, but I'm afraid I must decline. I am far from a worthy training partner for you." Issei smiled.
"I agree. You are but a boy. I had thought that the son of the Blood Dragon and Immortal Witch would be fiercer. You were certainly more ferocious when your woman was in trouble." Ares leered dangerously at Akeno.
Issei immediately felt defensive, ready to spit words back at the god of War.
"How could I not? A man has to defend the people he loves." Issei did his best to remain calm.
"Oh? It sounds like the words of a weak fool. A man should take what and who he wants. He should rise up to be above others. Settling for mediocrity is tantamount to failure. A man should always grab for more, never settle for stillness." Ares' smile was slowly melting.
Issei had to respect Ares' desperate desire for a fight. He was so damned persistent with his taunts.
"When I fought your father, he gave me this." Ares revealed a long red scar across his left ribs. "When I fought your mother, she left me this."
Ares unveiled a round scar on his right arm.
"I had hoped you would have their backbone but it seems that their son is a failure. Perhaps that is why they died of shame. A random illness doesn't explain enough to me."
Issei's temper flared like an inferno. He never tolerated any disrespect toward his dead parents. He tightened his fist to desperately remind himself not to fight. That was what Ares wanted.
"I can see now that you are nothing, boy. You were touted so well by Azazel. He professed such pride that you would surpass your parents and your predecessors. From what I see, if someone were to take your women right in front of you, defile them and shame you, then you couldn't do anything." Ares grinned when Issei took a step forward.
"Lord Ares, I would fight to the death to protect the people I love. I believe that a man should appreciate what he has and respect what he doesn't."
Ares was about to retort until…
"Ares, have you not shamed our people enough?" A familiar voice came from the side.
Gasps echoed as he made himself known. It was Hades.
"Forgive my tardiness. I had affairs to settle. I came to briefly check up on my guest." Hades turned to Issei.
"It was my intention to give this to you, Issei Hyoudou." Hades handed him a black slate of metal adorned with gems that were shaped into a helmet.
Many went silent the moment Hades produced it.
"You would endorse this boy?" Ares whispered.
"I am merely proving that he and his friends are my guest. You know that I treat my guests very well. Don't forget, they also came on invitation from your father. We keep very close eyes on our friends so we see to it that they are well cared for." Hades' eyes leered dangerously at the god of war.
Many backed away when he did so. Issei had to muster all the courage in his soul not to wince.
"Hmph." Ares sneered and left silently.
"My apologies, everyone. Please pretend that never happened." Zeus snapped his fingers, recommencing the party.
"Thank you, Lord Hades." Issei bowed again.
"It's as I said, Issei Hyoudou. Many are looking for an excuse to eliminate you." Hades turned to leave in the direction of Persephone and Demeter.
Issei decided that he'd had enough of the party and promptly left with his friends.
That night, he decided to have another bath. The waters in Aphrodites' temple were unlike anything he'd had before. He felt so relaxed and flexible. He could've stayed in the tub forever.
"How do you find my abode?" Aphrodite's voice came from behind the curtains to the bath.
"Excellent, Lady Aphrodite. Er, I'm sorry for my state." Issei looked around for his towel but it was gone. How could it have just disappeared?
"I see. Don't trouble yourself. If you don't mind, I'll be joining you."
'Huh?!' Issei gasped.
When Aphrodite entered, she was unclothed, naturally. Issei's jaw dropped. Her chest seemed to move with the lightest movement. Every step flaunted her figure with such allure that Issei couldn't believe such beauty was possible. Still, after laying eyes upon Akeno and his harem once more, he'd found that Aphrodite…perhaps wasn't as beautiful as he'd first thought.
The goddess went to clean herself in a corner of the bath with a flirtatious grin.
'If only I still had a body…' Ddraig wept.
"I apologize for Ares' behavior. He usually picks fights with people to test his strength. These peaceful times have been the harshest for him." Aphrodite's eyes glinted with a light of disgust at the mere mention of his name.
Issei was surprised to see it. He thought she'd loved Ares.
"Oh, and just to clear the air again, I never loved nor dated Ares. That was just his story. He wanted to get a rise out of me for a fight too. He thought the power of love would give him a thrill." Aphrodite began wiping herself slowly and Issei found it so difficult to look away.
"I hope you found your ladies' outfits appealing. I put great care into what I gave them." Aphrodite said.
"Yes, they were enchanting." Issei cracked a smile remembering how they'd all looked. He doubted he'd forget how they'd looked for a while.
"I met your parents once. I'm surprised you're polygamous. I had thought you would only love one person."
"I thought so as well but…they…appealed to me." Issei felt so awkward. He hadn't nary an idea of what to say or do in this state.
"I have lived a long time and had several romances. It's quite rare to see a harmonious relationship amongst one's lovers. At least, that's what it looks like."
"What do you mean?" Issei didn't like that last part.
"For your sake, there may be peace now. However, time changes people. New faces change people. Your harem may grow or diminish. Having children could produce new complications. Are you sure you can handle all that? If they turn on each other, can you keep the peace?" Aphrodite asked, her back facing him as she bent over to wash her hair.
"I…don't know." Issei had to take a deep breath. He couldn't stop his heart from racing. Everything was suddenly so hot and he knew it wasn't because of the water.
"Many think that I only represent romantic love or lust but my station goes beyond that. I can even sense familial love, although that's Hera's territory. I can see that the love they all feel for you is real. It'd be a shame if that love became poison, Issei." Aphrodite then turned around and walked into the pool, seating herself next to him.
She leaned closer, taking in his scent.
"Shall I help you? Or perhaps…should I just take over? We could just test things and see how it all goes. A fling could become true love." Aphrodite's sensuous voice was like a gentle vortex that enveloped Issei. He could barely move away from her.
He felt his reasoning and logic weaken. Ever principle, every rule he set for himself became like melting candle wax in the face of her advances. Issei had realized that ever since he'd set foot into Aphrodite's abode, everything she and the other women did aroused him beyond normal. Something was wrong.
Issei focused his willpower. He couldn't give in.
"I appreciate your offer, Lady Aphrodite but I must decline."
"I must admit, you're a top-tier catch. It's not easy finding an altruistic and honest young man like you in these parts. Come now, just give in and allow me to show what love we could make." Aphrodite laced her fingers between his.
"I still decline." Issei averted his gaze once more lest his eyes never leave her. He untangled his fingers from hers.
Aphrodite looked hurt, tears peppered the corner of her eyes.
"Why? Am I not up to your standards? You could literally do whatever you want to me, wherever you want, however you want. I'll wear whatever you ask and say whatever pleases you."
"N-No, you far surpass my standards but…I won't take on any new lovers without the others' permission." Issei scooted away but Aphrodite simply wrapped herself around him to prevent escape. Her body was so soft and supple and warm…
"What they don't know won't hurt them. I've already secured our privacy here. We could have a tryst and no one would be the wiser. It's been decades since I've had anyone comfort me. I'm so lonely, Issei. Please, won't you help me?" Aphrodite neared her lips to his.
She sounded so vulnerable, so tired. Issei couldn't help but pity her. The emotion in her voice sounded too real.
Issei summoned all the power he could and gently kept her away.
"Even so, I won't do it with someone I don't love! Call me old-fashioned, but I don't believe in one-night stands! There's gotta be a connection between us and that's final!" Issei managed to stay strong and resolute.
He felt sorry when he saw how gobsmacked Aphrodite looked but it quickly became confusion with what she did next.
"Pfft! Eheheheh! Ahahahahahaha!" Aphrodite giggled till she turned red. It was as if she was never on the verge of sobbing at all.
Issei was lost.
"I apologize for tempting you. I had to see how far I could push you. I was almost ready to drag you to bed. I even used my charm powers on you. You resisted it all. I'm impressed, Issei." Aphrodite had finally calmed down enough to speak.
"Wait…what?"
"Hades asked me to think of one for you. You see, he vets his clients very well before making deals. I decided to see how loyal you were to your woman. I wanted to see if you had the strength of character to resist having sex with even a love goddess like me. You've passed your first test. I wish I didn't have to clarify but I can't have you going around thinking I proposition anyone who catches my eye. I would just be the goddess of lust, otherwise." Aphrodite waved as she walked out.
Issei sat back down in the back.
'I am so proud of you, son! You mashed square instead of circle just like I told you!' Ddraig cackled tearfully.
'That. Was. So. DAMNED! HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRDDDD!' Issei screamed internally.
He had been 6 to 9 seconds away from jumping at Aphrodite.
'Hey, son. You can proudly say you resisted THE Aphrodite! That's not something just anyone could say!'
'Ugh…I may go insane here…'
"I'll be going now. Still, my temple tends to leave an effect on the people who stay here. I may not be your only visitor tonight." Aphrodite winked with a naughty smile as she left.
When Aphrodite was finally alone, she made a call to Hades.
"Your verdict?" He solemnly asked.
"He passed. He struggled quite a lot but he didn't lay a finger on me. I even had to charm him to really see what he was like inside. Still, kinda weird you asked me of all people to test him first."
"Love is the key to life. I figured you were the best person to start with. If you of all people, disapproved? I would've outright rejected him."
"Hm? And Ares? Was that your doing as well?"
"No. That was just Ares looking for a fight. Still, he proved useful and showed me that the boy has enough sense to pick his battles. He has one final test before I consider Azazel's request."
"Don't be too harsh, Hades. He's only a boy."
"He is a young man. He will be treated as such. We wish for peace but there will be war. Whether anyone likes it or not, he is destined to be at the center."
"Is that why you gave him your Stygian Slate? Does the boy even know that it's no trinket?"
"No. I want it to stay that way."
"I was quite astounded that you're even entertaining the thought of helping a foreigner." Aphrodite grinned teasingly.
"The boy doesn't interest me aside from his link with others. There is something happening, something behind the scenes that could prove dangerous for us all. I can feel it from my core." Hades drifted off forebodingly.
Aphrodite lost all pretense of amusement and teasing. To see Hades look even grimmer than usual was worrisome.
"Explain."
"I will when the time is right. I don't want to speak about it unless it's necessary. I shall go now. I have to prepare his final test." Hades ended their call.
Aphrodite stared at the night sky and the cities below.
"Oh my, my, my. Issei Hyoudou, your parents wanted nothing but happiness for you but I fear that's not the hand life has dealt you. I just hope that whatever happens is beneficial for everyone. I hope that love you have holds you together to the end. I do love a good romance story, after all."
Aphrodite grinned as she turned to the doorway.
"Don't you agree, Gabriel?"
The Archangel walked out of the shadows with a stern gaze.
"It's rude to eavesdrop on your host. I thought Heaven taught you all to be proper."
"Indeed. However, I have a job to do." Gabriel looked serenely coy as she spoke.
"You look innocent but you certainly hide a devious side, I see. Let me guess, you're his bodyguard." Aphrodite grinned as she poured a drink for the both of them.
"What makes you think that?" Gabriel kept her eyes trained on Aphrodite, much like how a wolf would with its enemy.
"When we were at the party, your eyes were always on him. You never strayed far from him. When Ares tried to start something, you were mere steps away, ready for action. It's already odd for you to be out of Heaven. It's even stranger that you'd be hanging around a bunch of children, Gabriel. There're only 2 conclusions: you're either personally concerned for their safety or someone is having you guard them." Aphrodite had a victorious smirk as she sipped her wine.
"After all, they're the Two Heavenly Dragons, the daughter of Baraqiel, a Fallen Angel that knows about the Vatican's corruption, and a Valkyrie that may know Odin's dirty secrets. They're delicious targets for our enemies."
"Very astute. Yes, it's my job to protect the boy until he's ready to stand on his own against stronger enemies." Gabriel took a sip from her own glass.
"Well, you'll have your work cut out for you, Gabriel. You should also be very careful of yourself. If word gets out, you'll be the first target."
"You don't need to tell me." Gabriel sighed as she stared at the night sky, contemplating what else would come their way.
And with that all said, this wraps up this chapter. Now, if you managed to stick around this long, I'll answer some questions and laying some matters to rest that were asked in the reviews.
1. Ddraig was upset with Issei whenever he got an ego because of Verum, who appears in Chapter 22 and what he was like was explained in Chapter 23. Given how new he is, I haven't shed light on Verum too much because that's gonna have to come later in the story. He restricts Issei from progressing too much with his powers because of the disgust that Verum instilled in him. Simply put, Verum was such a disgusting person that the whole reason why Issei doesn't have all his powers and why he gets lectured so much is because of the trauma Verum left behind. Ddraig didn't want Issei to be like his predecessor.
2. Issei will not be getting Ascalon. Issei doesn't even use it regularly and plus, it just doesn't appeal to me. Right now, I want Issei to focus on his abilities with the Boosted Gear and his natural Dragon heritage.
3. Issei doesn't have god-like power because I've grown to dislike Overpowered characters that grow too strong too quickly and have no challenges of any kind. I don't like it when characters didn't earn power that affects everyone else. I don't like power fantasies where there're no flaws or adversities.
I've read so many fanfics, manga, and light novels that I've noticed one trend in many of the ones I've seen with overpowered protagonists: lazy writing. Actual lazy writing. I don't want that for my stories. Now, granted, not all of them are lazy but those stories are very rare.
I want my stories to tackle actual problems for my characters and their worlds. I want them to have struggles. I want them to develop and go through hardships, whether it be in a fight or in personalities. That's also why I wrote "The Grim Herald". It was my first attempt at trying that out.
With all of that out of the way, I want to thank you for everything. To my readers that still stuck around with me this long, thank you for doing so. To my readers that have moved on, I also thank you for having helped encourage me to even get this far.
I can' guarantee how often I'll update my stories because adulting is a thing for me now, but I'll try to do so as often as I can. Until next time.
