Chapter 7: Ever died? Ever failed? Die again, Fail better.
Somewhere on Long Island
"Wait what?"
Laughing, Harry went on, "The gods are going to push you around for the majority of your life now. If they dislike your parent, then you are out of luck. In most cases; you make them mad - expect a curse of some kind. Your dad - he probably cares about you. Maybe." Harry sobered, "He may or may not claim you as his. Some demigods never find out who their parent is. It's a disgusting practice," Harry spat out in contempt.
"The gods can exist in many places at once, actually, wherever their realm of influence is invoked. This often leads to many relationships and children. They honestly forget about their children or just don't care about them enough to help them. The demigods that don't make it to camp end up dead, or the very few who survive become famous. Some of the world leaders have been unclaimed demigods."
I stared at Harry, not entirely sure what to feel. I'm excited that I have a living father, but to hear about how callously the demigods are treated by their own family is… I shook my head, "No! He cares, somewhat, I think. I mean- I remember a glow and a smile from him from when I was a baby. I'm sure of it!" I knew I was clinging to threads but I didn't want to think that my father didn't care about me or remember my existence. That would have broken a part of me. All my life kids made fun of me for not knowing my father, and then Gabe came and ruined any chance for fatherly love.
Harry raised his eyebrows, "Well then, if you like I can take a look and see if you actually ever met your father. It's a bit uncomfortable but you would know for sure if your father gives a damn about you."
"You can look at my memories!?"
"Yes."
"What the heck?! That's either seriously cool or wrong, I'm not sure." I stopped suddenly, shook my head and asked something else, "So what are you exactly? You have talked about magic; you have a wand, cast spells, and own an owl."
Harry's eyes flickered with emotions, but in an instance they were gone again. Harry slowly began, "There's a goddess, well Titan really, her name is Hecate. She's Greek, Roman, and Celtic. She blessed a devout group of followers in the beginning and some people of magicks come from her. Others come from the Norse and Egyptian parthenons or the Wiccans. Magic is a part of the world; it's an element like water, air, or fire and there's a lot of history, theories and legends about magic. But Magicks has gained a sentience of her own. The gods no longer control her.
The humans blessed with magicks are called many names because each culture sees them differently. I am one of these people. My father's family had been blessed for tens of centuries, and my mother was actually one of the few 'true' new-blessed, most "new-blessed" are the result of genes lining up for the first time in generations. Many families think that one shouldn't interbreed with new-blessed because it dilutes their magicks. It doesn't, but the short story is they took it so far they started marrying their siblings, in some families," I gagged.
Harry nodded in agreement, "Disgusting isn't it? Magicks is confusing and I would need at least a year to explain the basics enough that they would be understandable." I wondered where Harry was going with all of this… It was very confusing and wasn't answering my question.
(AN: it's supposed to be weird and random. Harry is trying to distract and confuse Percy a bit. And I'm trying to fit all the mythologies Riordan uses and Wizarding magicks.)
"So you are a wizard?"
"Yes."
"Okay." Harry looked very relieved. Actually, he looked vulnerable as he smiled shyly at me. 'He's really cute when he does that… Wait… What?! Why would I think Harry is cute?!' (AN: Begin the shipping! Nothing will happen until Percy is much older.) "Is that why Grover and Mr. Brunner don't like you?"
"Partially…" Harry glanced guiltily away.
"What, you couldn't have done anything to them that was that bad, right?"
"Well, that depends on your opinion of bad. If becoming more powerful than the gods is bad, then yes, I did something really bad."
I stared at Harry. "You are more powerful than the gods? How?!"
"There's a long and complicated story to explain it, or I can just read a children's book to you… Your choice."
"I'll take the children's book." I decided in a flash, and Harry pulled out the 'Tale of the Three Brothers' to read to me.
When he was finished, he said "My father's family is descended from the third brother. The cloak has been passed down father to son for generations, so I find it very funny that the British community believes that the Potters have always been 'light'."
"What do you mean by 'light'?"
"Well…" Harry began but then Hedwig swooped in and cuffed Harry's ears and barked - wait owls can bark? I thought they hooted- very angrily at Harry. Harry grinned sheepishly at the owl and tried to appease her.
"Hey girl! I'm so sorry. I…" Apparently Hedwig was having none of that. She started to batter Harry with her wings. It was kind of funny to see a snowy owl treat Harry like a misbehaving chick.
"Okay! I swear I won't run off on some potentially dangerous adventure without telling you first!" Hedwig seemed somewhat mollified by this. She landed on Harry's shoulder and began to groom his hair. I'm beginning to think that that owl is Harry's mother. Harry looked at the sky and seemed startled by something. He pulled out his wand and muttered, "Tempus." And a holographic digital clock thing appeared in the air and read 3:59 p.m.
Harry turned to me and rubbed the back off his neck saying, "I think to will have to continue this lesson some other time. We need to get you settled into your cabin!"
Harry undid his spells from before. He looked around and seemed to find what he was looking for. That something turned out to be a blonde girl with dark gray eyes.
"Miss? Could you help us? My friend here is new to camp and I don't know what camp he should be in." The girl seemed startled by Harry's polite formal tone.
"Um… Don't you need to be in the same cabin if you are both new?"
Harry chuckled, "No. You see, I am not a demigod, but my friend is. I will not be in any gods' cabin. I have a tent I can set up. Where would be a good place to do so if you don't mind my asking?"
The girl looked very confused, "How did you get into Camp of you aren't a half-blood?"
Harry winced, "Miss, I don't think this was intentional on your part but the term 'half-blood' is highly offensive. What if you said that does someone who was mixed race? While you know what you mean, they would take it as a slur against their heritage."
The girl was appalled, "I never thought of that…"
"It is no problem or fault of your own. It's your slang terms and if everyone uses it in the same sense then how others might use the same term doesn't occur or you." Harry clapped his hands, "Now we have seemed to have gotten off track. Could you please direct my friend and I to the cabin he will be staying in until his father claims him?"
"Oh! Sure!" The girl turned and looked at me. She seemed to contemplate telling me something. Finally she said, "You drool in your sleep."
"What?" I have absolutely no idea where that came from.
The girl giggled lightly, "I'm Annabeth Chase." She offered her hand and I shook it.
"I'm Percy Jackson. Now where did that comment come from?"
"Oh! I was the one that helped heal you! I'm a daughter of Athena but I wanted to learn first aid from the Apollo kids."
"Okay…" Harry butted in, "so what cabin does an undetermined demigod go to?"
"Oh, follow me to Hermes's Cabin. He is the god of travelers so all undetermined demigods go to him."
"That seems unfair to his kids though."
Annabeth looked sad, "It is always full with undetermined demigods. I'm lucky, Athena claims her kids very quickly."
As we passed by the cabins Annabeth told us to which god they belonged. "There's Apollo's… Athena's… And there's Artemis's -before you ask it's for her Hunters, an immortal group of maidens, not her kids." The cabins were beautiful and unique, perfectly tailored to each deity and their children.
We finally reached a run-down cabin with a caduceus above the door. Harry turned to Annabeth, "You have to be kidding me!"
"With so many people moving in and out…"
"No, this isn't okay! Some kids are living like refuges, while others live like they are in a prep school dorm! I'm going to fix this!" Harry grabbed chain that was around his neck and pulled out a charm shaped like a trunk. He removed it from the chain and placed it on the ground.
"What are you doing?" asked Annabeth curious.
"Ever heard of Hecate's Blessed? Well, I'm one." He tapped the trunk with his wand and it enlarged. Opening it he reached inside and pullout messenger back. He closed the trunk, shrunk, and put away the trunk. HE pulled a roll of parchment and fountain pen out of his bag. Muttering he wrote something down on it, rolled up the parchment and handed it to Hedwig, who had flown back startling Annabeth.
"What is that owl doing here?"
"Oh, she's my familiar. She is also trained to carry mail. I'm sending a letter to my bank manager."
"Why?"
"You'll see!"
