Epilogue

It was nearing four in the afternoon and the Priority Homicide squad was finishing up its paperwork on the latest case. Brenda had seen Hermione making a phone call, but was now reading a book lent to her by Tao.

"Do you need a ride somewhere?" Brenda asked, as she was approaching the other woman.

"Oh no," she said, putting in a scrap piece of paper to keep her place. "I called my grandfather and he told me that he was on his way over." She looked at the clock. "He should be here soon." She worried her lower lip. "Unless he's driving the Peugeot. If he is chances are it's going to be another half an hour or so."

Provenza's head went up a bit at the mentioning of the car. "A Peugeot? It wouldn't happen to be a 1959 Peugeot 403?"

A short man with steel gray curly hair, dressed more for a home cookout rather than a day out. This wasn't helped by the fact that he was wearing an apron telling everyone to kiss the chef. "Excuse me, but is this the Priority Homicide Squad?"

Hermione's face bloomed into a smile, as she called out, "Papa!"

The older man's face broke out into a broad grin, as he held his arms wide open for her. "There's my girl!" He went over to her, hugging her. "You ready to go?"

Nodding, she grabbed up her purse, and handed the book back over to Tao with a quiet thank you. "Thank you so much for allowing my intrusion."

"It was no problem," Brenda said. "It was an honor meeting you."

"Thank you," she answered. "Tell Fritz that I'll e-mail him this Friday!"

"That I will," she said with a grin, as they watched as she did a fist bump with Julio and waved goodbye to the others. Brenda ended up looking over to a shell shocked Provenza. "What's the matter?"

"Do you know who that man is?!" he asked her.

Frowning she said, "No, should I?"

Flynn walked into the bullpen, asking, "Was that Columbo I just saw walking out with Granger?"

"Yes!" Provenza said.

"What's so special about him?" Brenda asked.

"He's the man that was in charge of the Priority Murder Squad for thirty-some years," Flynn told her. "Retired in the 1990's."

"He had one of the highest conviction rates in the state," Provenza told her. "It was because of him that I wanted to become a detective."

"Really?" Brenda thought it over and said, "No wonder Hermione's observational skills are as good as they are." Turning around, she announced, "I'll be in my office taking care of some notifications. Let me know if something pops up."

She shut the door on the squad, closed the blinds, and dove into her desk for a Ding-Dong before having to make the phone calls notifying the family as to the murderer's arrest. Any sort of notification was difficult. They were at best bittersweet. Kurt Gunderson was still dead, after all, and not even capturing his killer would change that.

There was a soft tap on the door and the old man from earlier popped his head in. "I hope I'm not interrupting anything important. I just had one thing to say to you before I left with my granddaughter."

"Of course," she said, carefully swallowing the chocolate pastry. "What can I do for you?"

"I wanted to thank you for helping my girl," he said. "She's my only granddaughter. I have four sons and seven grandsons, but she's my only girl. Anyway, I made a few calls about you." He smiled. "All of them had excellent things to say about you and Hermione tells me that you're good."

She blushed. "Thank you."

He nodded. "I was told that boy that hurt my girl was here. And that you handled him like he should have been before."

Brenda nodded.

"I'm not a man of violence, but when he did that to my girl…" He shook his head. "But that's the past. I'm just happy she wasn't hurt again. And I wanted to thank you for that."

"You're very welcome," she told him. "So off to a BBQ?"

"What…" He looked down at himself. "Oh! I forgot I was wearing this. Actually, I'm taking my Granddaughter over to eat some chili and this is to keep it off of my shirt." He grinned like a kid attempting to get away with something. "Hermione's the only one that lets me eat it now!"

Grinning she lifted the Ding-Dong. "I know the feeling."

With that he waved goodbye and went on his way. Chuckling to herself, she thought, what an odd little man before going back to work.
