The group sat together in a circle as they watched. The glow emanating from the egg filled them with awe, and they were excited to see what would emerge.
"This is so cool," said Ash. "We're gonna get a new buddy, Pikachu!"
"Pikachu!" Pikachu said, every bit as excited as his trainer.
"I've never seen a Pokemon egg hatch," Serena said as she watched in awe.
"Well, I'll tell you, it's something to remember," said Meyer.
"It's definitely exciting," said Brock. "Getting to raise a Pokemon from the moment it's born truly is a unique experience. In a way, you become the Pokemon's parent. Just look at Misty and her Togepi, or you and your Phanpy. Or even Larvitar, in a way."
"Yeah," Ash said as he thought back to both of the Pokemon that he had hatched. He wondered if Phanpy was doing well back at Professor Oak's lab. He then thought about Larvitar. What would the rock skin Pokemon think about having another newly-hatched Pokemon on the team? Hopefully he'd be able to act like a good big brother to the little one.
His thoughts were interrupted when the egg began to shine brighter than ever.
"Oh my gosh!" said Bonnie. "It's gonna hatch!"
The group watched in amazement as the egg began to change shape. Slowly, it grew a recognizable head, along with arms and legs. Most notable, however, was the third appendage which was sticking out of the back of its head.
Finally, the glow subsided, revealing the newest member of Ash's team.
"Maw…" the Pokemon yawned.
Ash gasped in awe. The Pokemon now sitting in his lap had a small body that was mostly yellow, though its arms, feet, and the top of its head were all black. Its most notable feature was the huge appendage attached to the back of its head; it was a set of huge toothy jaws, like a bizarre ponytail.
"Mawile!" the Pokemon said as it looked up at Ash, excited to finally meet him.
"Whoa!" said Ash. "That is such a cool Pokemon!"
"It's so cute!" said Bonnie.
"Oh yeah it is!" said Rotom as it fired up its database. "Mawile, the Deceiver Pokémon. Mawile uses its docile-looking face to lull foes into complacency, then bites with its huge, relentless jaws. So remember! It may be cute, but those sure aren't just for show!"
As if to prove Rotom's point, Mawile's jaws became coated in icy energy and began to swing around, biting at everything within their reach as bits of ice jumped outwards. Ash's friends all jumped backwards, unwilling to be caught up in them.
"Whoa!" said Korrina. "Watch it!"
"Mawile!" Ash said in alarm. He then grabbed the newborn's head, causing her to calm down.
"Wile?" she said as she looked up at Ash. From the confused look on her face, Ash could tell that she hadn't meant harm to anyone.
"Hey, Mawile," said Ash. "I know you're excited about being born, but you have to watch those jaws of yours. You're going to hurt someone if you're not careful!"
"Maw?" said Mawile.
"Don't worry," said Ash. "You didn't mean to hurt anyone. Just make sure not to attack like that anymore."
"Mawile!" Mawile said with a smile, causing Ash and Pikachu to smile as well.
"Well, it's nice to finally meet you, Mawile!" said Ash.
"Yeah, it sure is!" said Rotom. "Female Mawile with the Intimidate Ability. Knows Ice Fang, Fairy Wind, Bite, and Growl. Ya know, Ice Fang is a pretty rare move on Mawile, so you sure got lucky!"
"Really?" said Ash. "That's so cool!"
He then paused as he noticed another one of Mawile's moves.
"Fairy wind? You mean-"
"Fun fact," said Rotom, "Mawile was recently re-classified as a Steel-Fairy type after the Fairy type was officially recognized!"
"Wow, that is awesome!" said Ash. "You really are a special Pokemon, Mawile!"
"Wile!" Mawile!" Mawile said happily, excited by the first praise it had received in its young life.
"Yeah!" said Serena. "And you're a cutie too!"
Mawile turned her head and gave Serena a curious look. Then, to her surprise, the deceiver Pokemon jumped into her arms.
"Whoa!" she said in surprise. "Hey there! You're really friendly, aren't you?"
"Mawile!" the newborn said happily.
"Well, of course she likes you!" said Korrina. "You've got the same colors, after all!"
Serena blinked, then looked down at herself. While it hadn't really occurred to her, her clothes were indeed mostly black and yellow, just like Mawile herself.
"Oh, yeah," Serena said, a smile forming on her face. "I do look like her."
Ash chuckled as he remembered a certain girl from Johto who would have loved to see that.
"Well, I'm glad you two are getting along," he said as he patted Mawile on the head. "I can't wait for you to be a part of my team, Mawile!"
"Maw!" Mawile!" the newborn said excitedly.
Ash's Pokemon looked in curiosity at the newly hatched Pokemon. Mawile looked back at them, curiosity in her eyes.
Surprisingly, it was Larvitar who first approached Mawile.
Mawile looked at Larvitar in curiosity.
The two youngest Pokemon in Ash's roster stared at each other in curiosity. Then Mawile began to nuzzle Larvitar.
"Mawile!" she said happily. Larvitar was uneasy with this level of closeness, but did not Harden himself, much to Ash's relief.
Hopefully he's getting better with others, Ash thought to himself.
Having apparently been satisfied with Larvitar, Mawile moved on to the other members of Ash's team. Pidgeot seemed eager to welcome the youngster into the fold, stretching a friendly wing towards her. Riolu also seemed happy, smiling as he offered a paw. Froakie seemed less enthusiastic, although still curious. Finally, Litleo sat on the ground and licked her paw, seemingly oblivious to the deceiver Pokemon.
Mawile happily greeted each of the members of her team, even patting Litleo on the head. The lion cub Pokemon never seemed to notice.
"So, what do you think, Mawile?" said Ash. "I hope you like your friends!"
"Mawile! Maw!" Mawile said with a smile on her face.
"I'm so glad you're getting along," said Ash. "We're all going to have so much fun together!"
Mawile cheered happily. Then, to her surprise, a rumbling sound began to emanate from her belly.
"Maw," Mawile said as she gripped her belly.
"What's wrong, Mawile?" said Ash. "Are you hungry?"
"Mawile, Wile," Mawile said with a frown.
"Well," said Serena, "why don't we get you something to eat?"
At this, Brock's eyes lit up (or, at least, they seemed to; it was hard to tell with him.) However, before he could do anything, Clemont stepped forwards.
"Well, that sounds like a job for me! I can guarantee that little Mawile's first meal is absolutely amazing! As a newborn, she deserves it!"
Brock stared in shock, hardly believing what had happened. Was he not supposed to be the main chef of the group? To his surprise, he then felt a hand on his shoulder. He turned to see Ash giving him an apologetic smile.
"Hey, Brock? I know you love to cook, but why don't you let Clemont give it a go? He loves cooking too, and he's pretty good at it too."
Brock turned back to the yellow-haired boy, who was already setting up his cooking area. He then perked up as an idea came to his head.
"Hey, Clemont? Do you need some help?"
The blond inventor turned back to him as he pulled various utensils out of his bag.
"Well, now that you mention it, I could use some help with the dessert."
"Oh," Brock said with a smile. "Well, I could-"
"I can help! I'm great at making Pokepuffs!"
Brock stared blankly as Serena strode up to Clemont's work area and began to set up her own baking area. Clemont accepted her help immediately, making enough space for her to work on her Pokepuffs.
"What… just happened?" he asked.
Mawile watched in fascination as the blond human meticulously prepared his meal, with some assistance from her mom. They were rushing back and forth carrying all sorts of food, then cutting them up, or tossing them into various bowls or pans, as well as blasting them with heat from their stoves. It was all so interesting, and she was excited to see what came out from this.
True, she had never had anything to eat before, so she wasn't sure what to expect. Even so, the smells that were coming from the blond human's cooking was amazing, and her mouth was getting watery just thinking about it.
She hoped it was done soon, though, because she was hungry.
Distracting herself from the thought of her rumbling tummy, she looked up at her dad. While she was initially confused as to why he didn't look like her, she assumed that it was some sort of weird breeding effect. After all, he had taken care of her ever since she was an egg, and he had been right there for her when she hatched. Therefore, she was clearly her dad.
Anyway, her dad seemed excited to eat, which was even more evidence that the food was going to be great. And uncle Pikachu seemed to be excited as well, although he seemed most excited about the bottle of weird red sauce.
Mawile then turned back to the cooking area to watch her mom. She hadn't really identified herself as such, but considering that her colors were the same as Mawile, she was obviously her mom. Also, it was pretty easy to tell that she was her dad's mate. In any case, her mom was doing a good job of helping the blond human prepare their food. And whatever she was making was going to be amazing. After all, this was her mom. It had to be.
The deceiver Pokemon was excited to see what would happen once her dad started training her along with the rest of her family. And she was also curious as to whether her mom could show her some of what she did as well.
Clemont grinned with pride as he began to plate his main course.
"There we go!"
He placed a piece of Take Down steak on his cutting board and sliced through it, revealing its steaming pink center. Satisfied with its doneness, he placed the two pieces onto a plate, next to a pile of steamed berries and mashed potatoes. He then set it aside as he prepared more plates.
"How are the Pokepuffs?" he asked Serena.
"They're almost ready!" the honey blonde performer said as she spread the frosting on her puffs. She then grabbed the sprinkles and strawberry slices she had set aside and applied them onto the treats. Satisfied, she placed them on a serving dish and set them aside. It would not be proper to eat them before their lunch, after all. She knew that Chespin in particular would love to do that sort of thing.
She then decided that she didn't want Chespin coming anywhere near her Pokepuffs, and placed them in Clemont's Space-Age-Keep-Bonnie-From-Eating-Dessert-Before-Dinner Food Cage (and silently prayed to Arceus that it didn't explode like the rest of Clemont's inventions.)
"Perfect!" Clemont said as he grabbed the tray with his prepared plates. He then marched off to the picnic table the rest of their group was now sitting at, and began to serve them.
"Here we go! I hope you're prepared for an unforgettable luncheon!"
"It's Mawile's first meal," said Bonnie. "Of course it's gonna be unforgettable."
The newborn watched excitedly as Clemont set a plate in front of her. She then grabbed her fork and stuck it into her steak. Before she could take any, however, Ash put his hand on hers.
"Hey, Mawile? You can't just take the whole steak like that!"
The deceiver Pokemon looked up at her trainer in confusion. With a shrug, Ash took the knife and began to cut the steak into pieces for her. Mawile watched in fascination as he went about cutting up her food, making the pieces small enough for her to eat.
"There you go!" Ash said happily. "Eat up!"
Mawile smiled as she took a piece of steak with her fork, and put it in her mouth. Her eyes widened as the taste hit her, being unlike anything she'd ever experienced before (not that she'd experienced very much yet, mind you) and she cried out in joy.
"I think she enjoyed it," said Ash.
"I thought she would," said Clemont. "I put my heart and soul into making this meal the best it could be for little Mawile!"
"And I'm so glad you did," said Ash. "You really are a great chef, Clemont!"
"Yeah he is!" said Bonnie. "MY big brother is the best cook ever!"
In the corner, Brock could be seen whimpering.
"Here you go, Mawile! My very own Poke Puffs!"
"Mawile!" the deceiver Pokemon said as she grabbed the little round cake. She looked at for a moment, curious about the little pink confection her mom had given her. Then, deciding that whatever her mother had given her clearly had to be really good, she took a bite.
Her eyes widening at the flavor, she popped the rest of it into her mouth.
"What do you think? That was really good, wasn't it?"
Mawile bounced up and down, asking for another one. They were the best thing ever!
"Sorry, Mawile, but if I give you too many you'll get a tummy ache, and you don't want that, do you?"
Mawile pouted. So what if her tummy ached a bit? Those things were delicious!
"So, what did you think?" her dad asked. "Wasn't that a great meal, Mawile?"
Mawile's frown vanished immediately as she looked up at her dad. WIth a smile, she cried out in satisfaction. Happy with this, her dad lifted her up and held her up to his level.
"Well, I think you're going to fit in perfectly on our team! So welcome to the gang, Mawile!"
He then grabbed a small red and white ball out of his pocket and held it out for her. The newborn looked at the ball, curious as to what it was for.
"It's for you," said Ash. "It makes sure you're an official member of the team."
"Maw!" Mawile said in understanding. She definitely wanted to be a member of her dad's team!
...Maybe she could be on her mom's team too someday?
Questions for later. For now, she pressed the button on the ball.
It was definitely freaky to be turned into energy and get sucked into a mysterious enclosed space.
Fortunately, it only lasted for a few moments before Ash let her out.
"Well, Mawile, I am really happy to have you with me."
"So, do you think you'll be able to find any more information on Team Rocket?" said Brock.
"We don't know," said Clemont. "But knowing them, they're bound to show up sooner or later."
"You could come with us," Ash suggested. "We tend to get mixed up with them."
"I appreciate the offer," said Meyer, "but we need to take care of this on our own."
Ash wasn't sure, but he could have sworn he heard Bonnie muttering something about secret identities, though he supposed he could have misheard.
"Yeah," said Clemont. "And in any case, I still need to learn how to be a good Gym Leader for when my dad's not around."
"Well, I think you'll be a great one," said Serena. "You're already really good at it!"
"Yeah," said Brock. "And just because you're having trouble now doesn't mean you won't get the hang of it later. Trust me, even if it's hard, it'll all be worth it!"
"Thanks guys," said Clemont. "I'll make sure to keep working hard to be a great Gym Leader!"
He then turned to Korrina.
"You keep doing your best to become a Gym Leader too, Korrina!"
"Got it," said Korrina. "We'll both be great!"
"Well, I have a good feeling about the next generation of Gym Leaders," said Meyer. "And I have a really good feeling about you, Ash. I hope to see you in our Gym soon!"
"Heck yeah!" said Ash. "And you'd better believe I'm going to beat you!"
"We'll see about that," said Meyer. "Anyway, you guys take care!"
"Yeah," said Clemont, "see you in Lumiose!"
"Bye!" said Bonnie. "I'll miss you!"
"Good luck with Team Rocket!" said Ash.
"Take care!" said Serena.
"See you later!" said Korrina.
"Have a safe journey!" said Brock.
Ash smiled as he watched his new friends leave. He then let his hand rest on one of his Pokeballs. The one containing his newest Pokemon.
He was now more determined than ever to challenge every gym in Kalos. And with every win, he would help Mawile become the best Pokemon she could be.
A/N: Have I ever mentioned that I am absolute $#!% at deadlines? Especially self-imposed ones. Ah well, At least I produced something.
Halfway through writing this chapter, I realized that I didn't like the direction where it was going, so I ended up scrapping the whole thing and starting over. Then I had a serious case of writer's block. I then started working on another story to try to alleviate it, but now I have writer's block for that one (and the other story I had started since before that. Yay.)
By the way, Mawile is (Somewhat Loosely) based on Ash's Mawile from Ashes of the Past.
Anyway, you can expect to see the next chapter to come out at some point between next week and the heat death of the universe.
