CHAPTER 16

A TREASURE FOUND

Months passed, graduation came and time went on, but Kaito still waited for Shinichi. He debuted as a magician of the Moonlight and received instant success, but he was never happy and everyone around him noticed that he seemed to be suspended in time, waiting for something to happen, they had an idea of what, but were never able to gain enough courage to talk about the forbidden topic.

In a fit of depression, a year after Shinichi's disappearance, Kaito had held Pandora up to the moon wondering if he should destroy it, but somehow underneath a blue moon it had disappeared inside his own skin. As time went on Kaito realized that he had stopped aging. He had raged, and cried bitterly, in the end though, he went on his day, and he never told anyone about what had happened to the gem. He had already given up being Kid, not being able to handle all the reminders of Shinichi.

Kaito had enough money from his parent's inheritance and his own vocation as a magician that when he heard about a deserted island on sale, he quickly acquired it, for the times when he wanted to be alone, away from all the people. Years flew by, one day Aoko came with her husband Hakuba to his home and then proceeded to drag him to an amusement park because he had been sulking around his home for the last few days and she was worried about him.

Kaito could hardly tell her that this was the place that Shinichi had been given the poison that had turned him into a child and had Shinichi being there next to him, he would once again be celebrating his 17 birthday and would had become an immortal like him. So he just silently indulged her in her efforts to cheer him up, lest she become disappointed and try something more drastic because nothing except having Shinichi again by his side would cheer him up.

Next day he was on his way to the island that he had brought, along the way though he heard the rumors about a cursed boy who was found gravely injured one day, and who was always stumbling on the dead bodies and didn't remember anything. There had been a talk of abandoning him on an island because of his curse, but they were hesitant because he wasn't a killer and it would cruel to leave him alone, when he didn't even remember his own name let alone anything else. Kaito thought that his heart would stop when he heard the boy's description; he immediately changed the route to where the rumors said the boy was living at the edge of the town.

He finally saw the boy that some part of his heart had dared not believe was real, lest he was disappointed again, but he wasn't because the boy living in the shack at the edge of the town was definitely Shinichi. He immediately went to him and when Shinichi saw him, he fainted from the sudden burst of memories, not knowing the reason of his sudden fainting; he panicked, wondering if something was wrong with his Shin-chan.

Shinichi woke up to a throbbing head. Groaning he tried to rub the pain away, when he felt a cold hand on his forehead, he sighed in relief. "Shinichi" Kaito called softly, not daring to breathe, afraid it was a dream that he would suddenly wake up from. "Yes Kaito, it's me." Shinichi confirmed still not opening his eyes. Suddenly Shinichi found himself in a crushing grip of Kaito's, but he didn't say anything just simply hugged him back.

They went to the island that Kaito had brought, in hopes of one day spending his time there with his beloved. After settling down, they told each other everything about themselves that had happened after they had last seen each other.

Shinichi told Kaito that after his showdown with Gin, he was found on shore by the inhabitants, gravely injured, but he was treated and given a place to live and work when it became clear that he didn't remember anything and there was no missing person report filed; though his lack of memory didn't stop his curse.

Kaito laughed and said it wasn't a curse at least not anymore, since it had brought Shinichi back to him because if he hadn't heard the rumors of a death magnet, he would have missed him, despite being so close. Kaito also told him about hanging his Kid costume and becoming a full blown magician. He quietly also told him about Pandora's disappearance inside his own hand and him becoming an immortal, stuck at a same age of 20. Shinichi quietly held his hand, knowing without being told how worried Kaito must have been about never finding him and staying alone for the next 10,000 years.

Shinichi wanted to meet his parents, Agase and Heiji once more, he wanted to tell them that he was alive, but he refrained because he knew that one day he would have to say goodbye since he couldn't bear watching them slowly wither away with time. Kaito had told him that they had all finally began moving forward, he wasn't about to come and halt their recovery not when they would soon again have to say goodbye. Perhaps their last memory of him was harsh and unforgettable, a regret that they would always carry with them, of not being able to save him, but they were slowly moving on. He wasn't about to come in their life again, only to remind them of their inability to do anything for him, as he was left behind once more.

Kaito didn't like Shinichi's decision but he understood where he was coming from, especially when he knew that he too would have to leave soon, his ability to disguise would not help him for much longer, not with all the shrewd detectives around him and the media's spotlight on him. Shinichi helped him plan his fake death, at first he had argued against Kaito leaving his life that he could still enjoy for some more time, behind him, but Kaito was adamant on never ever leaving Shinichi's side again and since Shinichi wouldn't be coming back with him. He was going to leave that life behind, since they could just start anew somewhere else.

Kaito faked his own death via a plane crash while returning from his tour from America. Since it was a private plane that Kaito himself piloted there was no death other than own staged one, and since the plane crashed into the ocean they never were able to recover his body or find evidence for foul play. His family and friends grieved for him, but hoped that he was able to find peace and happiness in his next life which he never was able to find in this life.

Even if he was never able to find peace, what with their chaotic lifestyle, Kaito indeed did manage to find his happiness with Shinichi. They had to change their place of residence frequently, but for the next 10,000 years they were happy and content beside each other. The world changed a lot during that time, but by each other side they were pleased to discover all the changes happening around the globe. After 10,000 years passed, they realized that they had once again started to age, they went back to Japan; where it all had began and lived their last life together blissfully, even adopting two boys and two girls.

Sixty years later, during the night of full moon, they died peacefully in their sleep. And underneath the moonlight their bodies glowed red and soon in a blaze of red cloud, only a doublet gem was left where they had slept, waiting for the next pair of lovers to come and try its legend.

Note:

It finally ended, I am not completely happy with the way it ended but I am glad it did because I had lost complete interest in the DC manga especially when there is no visible ending in sight. After I lost the notes of the story, I grew bored of it but I wanted to end the story no matter what, so I hope you ignore the lackluster writing and just enjoy the ending. I had no idea how I originally wanted it to go but I am happy with my sudden inspirational ending. But I will probably not be writing about DC for a long time. Next fan fiction will probably on "Itachi, I love him so very much".

I will try to clear everything that might create confusion, so here goes nothing;

Yes Shinichi had not absorbed the gem, so only Kaito should have turned into the gem, but it's a doublet, so it will absorb the person nearest to the person who is holding the gem within themselves. It just so happen, that Shinichi was nearest to the gem holder that is Kaito. Normally yes only greedy people will look for Pandora, but the gem only work for those who know love and loss and have hope of being reunited with their precious one.

About the ages not matching my timeline, I am citing creativity license and unity of time obviously don't exist for me, so don't look to deeply, even I am left scratching my head for how to make it all possible within such a compact time limit for ages.

Now to study for my Mphil entry exams please pray for me, I really want to get admission to my chosen university.
