Written for Hogwarts School of Witchcraft & Wizardry (Challenges & Assignments). The prompt was to write a story replicating that of Persephone and Hades. I was going to do something a bit different, but then inspiration happened and I had to do this. Keep in mind that I'm writing this as an interpretation.

Disclaimer: I don't own Harry Potter.

A Chance

She was a rare sight to behold indeed. It wasn't often you might stumble upon such a vision of utter beauty. Her eyes lit up with sunlight and her smile twinkled like stars. That was how he saw her, how he'd always seen her. From the very moment he met her, he never forgot. It would truly be a crime for him to forget. He would never forget. She was his and he was hers.

Except she didn't seem to agree.

When he met her, she was gorgeous. The moment he started to charm her it all vanished. It was as though he'd awakened from the best dream and found himself in reality. Her eyes still lit up, but this time it was fire swirling within them – not sunlight. Her smile was nonexistent. He hated his words, his actions. They hadn't robbed her of her beauty, but they had changed it. It was a fiery and enraged beauty that was quite unlike the pleasant, carefree radiance from before.

As time went on, that seemed to be the only beauty she was willing to grace him with. So, he accepted it. He even began to seek it out. He figured out which buttons to push and when. He took every chance to coerce it out of her. It became his favorite pastime to attempt to enrage her to her breaking point. It was the only type of beauty she granted him, so he held on to it as well as he could for as long as he could. She always ended it much too soon, though, leaving more quickly than he would have liked. Still, he pressed onward, doing his best to prolong his time with her every chance that he received.

Things went like this for a long time, until things changed. She changed. She became more receptive, more engaging. He grew confident as a result. The charm remained but it was different, too. Then one day he couldn't help himself anymore. He kissed her, fully expecting an explosion from the beauty. She kissed him, smiling as she did. Things were altogether wonderful and perfect. For a moment, everything was beautiful. The world shone throughout the fall and the winter and even the spring. They were an excellent pair, unlike any other.

Until they had to leave their paradise and reenter the real world. Her sister was furious and possessive. His family was concerned about the war going on in the world. They wouldn't have lasted, not like that. Still, he remained, hopeful that things would be alright if he could just hold on. If they could just stay together through it all, they might have a chance. They might have the chance to make a life together.

So they waited. He waited and she waited for the moment that they could be free and live in harmony with one another. Every summer, she had to return to her sister and bring life to the world. But throughout the winter, she was his and he was hers. Forever.

Lily was Persephone; James was Hades; and Petunia was kind of Demeter. It was an interpretation that I just couldn't resist, so I went for it.
