Nora's a Mommy
-Chapter 37-
"Oh sweet freedom how I missed thee." Yang sighed overdramatically as she waltz down the halls of Beacon with a grin, having been given a clean bill of health by Professor Peach. Which was great since she was really starting to get bored from just sitting around and doing nothing all day, especially after Ruby had also left with that Pietro guy and the Robo siblings with the promise she'd take it easy. 'Hmm… need to come up with a better nickname for those two. Maybe the Dynamo Duo… nah, The P-P twins… pffft funny but no, oh I got it the-'
"Ahem." Before she could finish her thought, the sound of someone clearing their throat loudly snapped the bodacious blonde back to reality with a soft yelp.
However, when she looked around for the source, Yang was confused to find herself completely alone in the hall. Not a soul was to be found aside from herself and a pair of stray cats lounging around on a nearby windowsill, a small black Maine coon and a fluffy black and blue tabby.
"Huh, weird, I could have sworn… eh must've been my imagination," The blonde muttered with a shrug and continuing along while stretching her arms over her head as her back cracked satisfyingly. She only went a couple of feet before stopping again, this time by the cats as she reached down to scratch the tabby's ears. "Hey there little cuties, I haven't seen you around here before. Hoping to get some first paw a-cat-emics for yourself? Hehehe…"
"Kitten I like to think I have a very open sense of humor and even I have to admit that pun was terrible."
Yang froze mid-scratch, her eyes bugging out of her head as she stared at the tabby in shock. "…Did you just…"
"Talk? Why yes, yes I did," The striped cat stated in a smooth feminine voice as she stood up with a yawn and hopped onto the girl's shoulders, rubbing against her neck with a soft purring. "What's wrong kitten, not happy to see me again so soon?"
"Again? What are you… the fire cat! You're that fire cat from Mtn Glenn!" Memories of a certain giant feline flashed through Yang's mind as she trailed off and pointing at the tabby with a gasp.
"Ding-ding, get the kitten a prize," The cat said jokingly while hopping down into the brawler's arms, a playful smirk on her feline lips as she placed a paw in her hand like she was shaking it. "The name is Matatabi by the way."
"…Yang, nice to meet ya," Deciding to just go with the flow for now, since at this point a talking cat was just par the course for her life, Yang shook the paw with a nod while introducing herself. "You are a lot smaller than the last time I saw you. Decide to go on a diet or something?"
"I can freely adjust my size however I see fit," To prove her point Matatabi suddenly doubled in size and growing a second tail, making Yang grunt in surprise at the sudden increase of weight, then shrinking back to normal cat size. "It's just one of the many perks that comes with being what I am."
"Damn, most people would kill to be able to do that," Yang muttered, giggling to herself when she pictured Ruby and Weiss's reactions to such an ability. After a moment though the blonde was brought back out of her thoughts once more by the shrunken Biju jumping back to the windowsill. "So any particular reason you're here? I doubt you just popped in for a hello."
"And people say blondes are dumb," Matatabi nodded her head with a teasing smirk as Yang rolled her eyes at the joke. "But you'd be correct, I was on my way to see how my Otouto was doing after his recent… misadventure and figured I'd stop by and help you sort out some family drama of your own while I'm at it."
"…Which drama exactly?" It was sad she had to ask but the truth was Yang had nothing but drama going on with her family at the moment. From Ruby having a mental breakdown due to Naruto's memories to her long-lost mother's abrupt reappearance, it seemed like every time she turned around some crazy ass event was completely shaking up her life.
"Why don't you ask my friend here," The heterochromatic tabby suggested while turning around and nudging her fellow feline's side. When all she got in response was the maine coon rolling over with an irritated grumble as it pointedly ignore her, Matatabi rolled her eyes and smacked it's head. "Oh, quit moping around Chickling and say hello to your kit already."
"Fuck. Off."
"Mom!?" Yang exclaimed when none other than Raven's voice came from the second cat, who finally turned to reveal her annoyance filled red gaze on the blonde.
"Yes Yang, it's me unfortunately," She muttered dryly with a deadpan look on her face that didn't change even when her slack-jawed daughter picked her up. The transformed ravenette continued to grumble under her breath for a bit as she dangled in the bodacious teen's grasp, before taking a few calming breaths and schooling her features as best she could. "I'm glad to see you are doing well still, how have you been doing?"
"You're a cat… why are you a cat?" Her attempt at casual chatter was ignored though as Yang bluntly asked the very important question currently dominating her thoughts.
Sighing, Raven jerked her head towards Matatabi with a scowl as the tabby Biju basked in the sunlight. "She turned me into one because she thinks it's funn-"
A small blue fireball smacked into Cat Raven's face and popped like a firecracker causing Yang to drop her with a startled yelp. Luckily the former bandit leader was able to land on her feet, but she was almost immediately met with a flaming bop atop the head by her fellow feline. "Don't even start with that sob stuff Chickling, I turned you into a cat because you kept refusing to come here on your own. The fact I find it hilarious is purely coincidental."
Raven hissed as she struggled to wipe the soot and embers off her face with a paw. "I told you to stop calling me Chickling you damn Cat."
"Perhaps I will should you stop acting like one all the time."
"Why I-"
"Okay you two, break it up, I love a good cat fight as the next person but this is getting a little far" Grabbing each cat by the scruff, Yang quickly pulled the arguing duo apart when she saw claws starting to get bared. Holding them at arm's length, she waited until they had settled down a bit before continuing. "So let me get this straight, you turned my mom into a cat because she wouldn't come see me by herself?
"She was quite adamant on not coming, yes."
"Because I had other things that needed to be attended too." Raven said, making Matatabi huff with an eyeroll.
"Oh puh-lease, you were just gonna go back to stalking the kit again like some creepy… well stalker," She stated with an accusing glare. "You're already skulking around all the time, you might as well actually be productive and bond with your kitten while you can."
"I wanted to give her time to adjust first."
"You've given her seventeen years of not being in her life, I think that's more than long enough Chickling."
'Jeez, they sound like an arguing mother and daughter,' Yang thought to herself, giggling softly while the pair of felines continued to bicker back and forth, waiting for them to eventually wind down. When they still showed no sign of stopping after five minutes straight though, the blonde's patience wore thin and she loudly cleared her throat to get. "All right I think I got it mom, you got turned into a pussy because you were being too much of a pussy. Eh? Ehhh?"
…
A long silence stretched out as both Matatabi and Raven stared at the brawler with blank disapproving looks.
"You just had to inherit your father's awful sense of humor, didn't you?" The latter muttered, palming her face with an exasperated groan.
"I feel offended." Matatabi added as she glowered at the long-haired blonde holding her.
"Oh come on, I'm just kitten aro-" Streams of blue and orange flames billowed from the cats' mouths and slammed into Yang's face they died down the brawler was left with a blackened soot covered face and a deep frown on her lips as she coughed up a cloud of smoke. "…Everybody's a critic."
"Anyway," Pulling herself free with ease, Matatabi nimbly landed on the floor and shook a bit to straighten up her ruffled fur. Then without hesitation the shrunken tailed beast casually strutted off down the hall. "I'll just leave you two alone to finally catch up properly, have fun."
"Hold on, where the hell do you think you're going?!" Raven flailed around wildly in her daughter's grasp in a desperate bid to get at the retreating tabby. However the moment she managed to get free, Matatabi was enveloped in a swirl of fiery blue aura and disappeared from sight. "Get back here you damn mangy bitch and turn me back!"
"Maybe later if I feel like it," Her voice seemed sound from all directions as the whole hallway gained a bluish tint that slowly faded away into nothing with an echoing laugh. "Now you two have fun~."
"By Oum I hate that fucking cat," Raven growled, her tail puffed out and claws digging into the floor as she barely held back the very strong urge to start shredding everything in sight that was flooding through her. Instead, after taking a few calming breaths, the woman turned feline turned back to her daughter and leapt into her arms once more. "Well then, seeing as I apparently have no choice in the matter, I guess we should 'hang out'."
"Sweet, does this mean I have to get you a litterbox?" Yang jokingly asked with a cheesy grin, making her mother's already sour expression somehow become even worse.
"…I'm going to start clawing you now, I don't know when I'm going to stop."
"Wha-" That was all the bodacious blonde managed to say before her vision was filled by black fluff. Many students and teachers throughout Beacon jumped as her agonized screams and the angry yowling of her cat mama rang through the halls for several minutes.
-[Insert Comical transition]-
Whilst Yang was getting a painful firsthand introduction to her mother's lack of a funny bone, and her shiny new claws, Ruby could be found showing Pietro and Poppi around her team's dorm. Glossing over the newly patched hole in the ceiling and replaced window, she had just gotten to her impromptu work-station where Penny's normal body was still laid out in disrepair.
Speaking of the orange-haired gynoid, Penny in her chibi body was currently perched atop her new sister's head with the biggest smile ever as she eagerly jotted stuff down in a tiny notebook.
"I've been doing my best to get everything back in working order again but the lighting strike completely fried the central and back up processors. Worse still, most of the internal wiring is burnt out and the neuro-fiber weave melted into the synthetic skin," Ruby explained to the chair bound inventor, carefully lifting or moving various parts of the damaged gynoid so he could get a better look. "Thankfully the endoskeleton itself was undamaged and I'm pretty certain I can still salvage most of the primary components, but I'll definitely need to replace the Dust fuel lines. Although that's probably for the best anyway, they've kept getting clogged for some reason which I just couldn't figure out."
"Ah yes, I had a similar problem while constructing Poppi, it was caused by a flaw in the distributor filter design that mixed some of the oil from the lubrication lines in." Pietro typed in a few commands in his chair while he spoke, causing a multilayer hologram of Poppi's schematics appearing.
The instant she saw them however, an excited squeal escaped Ruby's lips and her eyes turned to stars as all thoughts of repairs vanished from her mind.
"Oh my Oum! She has a triple form change feature and multi-weapon storage!? Amazing!" She exclaimed while waving her hand through the projection, splitting it into three separate images. One was Poppi as she was now, albeit translucent to reveal the various circuity and machinery within. The other two however depicted a teenage form and an adult form, each progressively more human in appearance than the last, which Poppi could apparently change into at will.
Grabbing the third model, the raven-redhead held it between both hands before pulling them apart to enlarge the image to full scale. Then with a flick of her wrist, the projection started to lazily spin in place for her as she marveled over every single detail. "Ah! That's my experimental two-port coolant infuser design. It actually works?"
"That it does more than that, half the size and twenty percent more efficient than the original, you should be proud of yourself." Pietro said as he patted Ruby's shoulder, snapping her out of her fangirl mode and making her blush as she shrank into her hood shyly.
"O-oh, I'm sure it i-isn't that big a deal…" She mumbled, wringing her wrists with a nervous giggle.
"On the contrary grandmother your contributions have been nothing short of invaluable," Poppi chipped in while taking a seat on Weiss's bed and curiously bouncing in place on the mattress. "You are right sister, this is strangely fun."
"I told you so! And just wait till you get to try a pillow fight!" Penny exclaimed with the brightest smile ever while jotting another thing down.
"What is a pillow fight?"
"Oh its this super fun sleep-over game where you…"
Caught up in their own conversation, neither of them noticed Ruby's shoulders droop and she covered her reddening face. 'Dang it Yang, why did you have to get her to call me that? Why!?'
Meanwhile Pietro chuckled softly as he watched his daughters playing and Ruby's bashful reaction at getting called a grandmother. Deciding to give the latter a reprieve, he cleared his throat to get all the girls attention while swapping the hologram with the one of Poppi's current appearance. At the same time, a device on his chair scanned Penny's broken body, creating another 3D projection which he then lined up alongside the Poppi design.
"Your assessment appears quite spot on, these damages are not going to be an easy nor fast fix," He muttered while tapping various sections of the Penny Hologram, highlighting them as separate enlarged images of those areas appeared. However, his frown was quick to turn into a smile as he started to take pieces from the newer gynoid's blueprints and inserting them over the older model. "Thankfully though I came prepared, Poppi could you go get my equipment from the ship and bring it here please?"
"Of course father." The child-like robot said while hopping to her feet.
"Yay! Road Trip!" Penny cheered, jumping down into her sister's hands and pointing ahead dramatically. "Oh, I've always wanted to say this… On to adventure! Full steam ahead!"
"Understood, engaging flight boosters, maximum thrust."
"Wha-AAAAAaaaaaa!" A shrill shriek of joy tore from the orangette's lips as Poppi sprouted miniature jet engines from her feet and blasted out the window like a rocket, nearly bowing Ruby and Pietro over from the resulting flush of wind.
"Oh dear… seems I need to give her another talk about figures of speech." Pietro mumbled to himself with a bemused sigh while straightening out his hat.
"She definitely shares that problem with Penny," Ruby said as she giggled nostalgically, remembering all the times that Penny had taken what she heard too literally. Like the time she tried to stuff Weiss in the toilet while Yang was teaching her how to play poker and she misunderstood what a 'Royal Flush' was. "But that's just part of what makes them them after all."
"Indeed it is." The elderly inventor agreed with a chuckle of his own.
Turning her attention back to the holograms, a thought popped into Ruby's head when her gaze settled on the partially disassembled Poppi projection. "Um speaking of how they are, if you don't mind me asking I was wondering why Poppi's base mode looks so… uhhh…"
"Obviously robotic?" Pietro suggested, getting the raven-redhead to nod sheepishly.
"Yeah, that, I don't mean to be rude but it just seems a little odd that you put so much effort into making Penny look human but not Poppi."
"Oh no worries, I quite understand what you mean Ms. Rose," The chair bound man said while patting her on the back. "And the truth be told, I had very little to do with how she looks currently. That was all Poppi's work."
And now Ruby was officially lost…
"Uh what?" Was she could say as she turned to her fellow mechanical genius with a raised brow.
Unable to help himself, Pietro chuckled softly in amusement at the adorable look of confusion on the young teen's face. He then proceeded to type something into his walker's console that caused all of Poppi's blueprints to change, becoming completely human looking just like Penny.
"This is how I had originally planned for her to look when I first started making her, but I ended up finishing her AI much sooner than I expected so I had to store her in my lab's computer until her body was ready," He explained before switching the holograms back to how they were, "However, while she was in there she managed to access my project files and decided to make a few changes to her designs. When I asked her why she did so, she said that she didn't want to hide who she was, which is why I let her keep the changes."
"Oh, that makes sense I guess." The scythe user muttered with a nod. 'So not entirely like Penny then, that's good to know.'
To be honest Ruby had been starting to worry that with how similar the two acted that Poppi would turn out as a simple copy paste of Penny. So it was nice to hear that the young gynoid was already showing traits of her own individuality.
"Knock knock, anyone home." Before she could mull over such thoughts for long though, the familiar voice of one Taiyang Xiao-Long rang out as he peered in through the doorway. Spotting his youngest daughter the blond stepped inside with a smile, pausing briefly when he noticed the elderly man in the legged wheelchair, before shrugging it off. "There you are Ruby, I had a feeling you'd be back here again."
"Oh, hi dad," Ruby's reaction to her father was noticeably less positive as she shrank back into her cloak with a nervous smile. "Am I in trouble?"
Her worry was understandable considering how she'd been acting over the last day and the half, which included but was not limited to beating the hell out of her uncle and getting both herself and Yang briefly hospitalized. Cowering slightly as he got closer, the already short girl looked practically miniscule in comparison to the man towering over her.
"Will you relax Ruby, I'm just here to make sure you're not trying to overwork yourself again," In the end though her fears were proven unfounded as Taiyang rubbed her head with a booming chuckle. His expression suddenly turned serious though as he grabbed her by the waist and lifted her up to eye level with a stern look. "You aren't, right?"
"No dad, I promise." Ruby mumbled meekly, hands held up in surrender and shaking her head quick enough to leave afterimages.
"Good, and I expect you to keep it that way," He said while pulling her in a hug with a soft smile. "Oum knows I worry about you girls enough as it is."
That caused the little reaper to wince slightly, a flash of guilt flowing through her as she snuggled into her father's grasp and hugging him back. "I'm sorry daddy."
"It's okay sweetie, after these last few months I'd have been surprised if you or Yang didn't have a little meltdown."
Ruby mumbled something into her father's shoulder that only he could understand, making him chuckle again as he patted her head.
"Okay so it was more than a little breakdown," Taiyang said before gently prizing his daughter off and setting her back down. "But enough of this sob stuff, how about you introduce me to your friend over there?"
As he spoke the blonde gestured over to Pietro, who had gone back to working on Penny while he politely waited for the duo to finish. This in turn made Ruby freeze and turn almost as red as her cloak upon remembering that the elderly man had been in the room the whole time, before once again sinking into her cloak with an embarrassed whimper.
Seeing as she wasn't probably going to be talking for a while, Pietro had his walker step closer and offered the blonde a hand. "Pietro Polendina, I'm Penny's father, it's a pleasure to make your acquaintance."
"Ah, so you're the one who made the robot girl Ruby couldn't stop gushing about," Tai said with a grin as he accepted the handshake while Ruby somehow turned even redder with an embarrassed squeak. "The name is Taiyang Xiao-Long, my friends call me Tai, and the pleasure is all mine. I'm sorry for just barging in like this but-"
"No need to apologize, as a new father myself I completely understand how it must've been," The chair bound inventor cut in with a dismissive wave. "I've only had my daughters in my life for a few months and I already can't have them out of my sight for more than a few minutes without worrying sick about what trouble they could get themselves into."
"Ain't that the truth, but that's what kids are for," A sigh escaped Tai's lips as he shook his head in amusement as he pulled Ruby into a one-armed hug. She tried to pull herself free but sadly her father was the one that Yang had inherited her freakish strength from and the poor girl found herself trapped in his grasp. "Oh I could go on for days about all the mischief this one got herself into."
"Pwease don't." The raven-redhead pleaded, her words garbled up from her face being squished against the side of her father's chest.
"As much as I'd love to embarrass my daughter further though, I have to get going." By some miracle though, the man suddenly let her go on his own volition and straightened up his outfit.
"Do you have to go home already?" Ruby asked with a mixture of disappointment and hope in her voice. The former from barely getting to hang out with her dad and the latter at avoiding even further embarrassment at his hands.
"Who said anything about going home? After everything that's happened, I'm not letting you or Yang out of my sight for more than a day anymore," Tai was quick to shoot those thoughts down with a shake of his head, causing the short teen to freeze as he continued to explain. "And before you say anything, I've got a motel to stay at for the time being and the school board approved my paid leave for the next three months, so expect to see me around here a lot more often."
"Oh… greeeaaat…" The words basically fell out of Ruby's mouth as the scythe user stared at her father with a blank look on her face. Internally though she was practically screaming in horror as one of her worst childhood fears was suddenly coming to life right before her. 'I got to warn Yang! Maybe she can-Hey, wait a second… if he doesn't need to go home than why was he in such a hurry to leave in the middle of the afternoon on a weekend?'
Breaking out of her internal panic, the raven-redhead's was about to vocalize this question when she finally noticed something off about her father's appearance.
"Why are you wearing your nice clothes dad?" Sure enough in place of his normal attire Tai was dressed in a nice crisp brown tux with a light blue undershirt and a pair of fancy black boots. It was an outfit that her father had gathering dust in his closet for years but never once wore as far as Ruby could remember, yet at the same time refused to let anyone touch it.
So to see him wearing it today was nothing short of mind boggling for the scythe user.
"Oh, these old things, w-well I just thought I'd spruce things up a bit, yeah, trying out a new look," Tai said quickly while pretending to cough into his hand and blatantly refusing to meet Ruby's gaze. However, as he stumbled over his words, the blonde could feel his daughter's gaze boring into his head. "…You're not buying any of this, are you?"
Ruby shook her head as she crossed her arms and narrowing her eyes, a foot tapping against the floor expectantly. The situation took a completely an abrupt one eighty as the father found himself cowering under his daughter's suspicious glare.
"Oh alright, I'm going on a date dammit." And naturally it took practically no time for Tai to crack under the pressure and admit the truth, making Ruby gasp in shock.
"A date!?" She exclaimed, zipping across the room in a blink and grabbing her father's shirt. "YOU are going on a DATE!? You're dating someone!?"
Sighing exasperatedly, Tai nodded his head with his shoulders slumped. "Yes Ruby."
"Seriously!?"
"Yes. Ruby."
"Who!? When!? How!?"
Before Tai could answer any of these question's, another knock at the door got everyone's attention. [Hey, what the hell is taking so long Tai? We're gonna miss the movie]
…
…
Ruby's head slowly turned back to her father, her jaw dropped and eyes bugged out in disbelief while the man himself tugged on his collar with a nervous smile. "Well I guess that answers who, right?"
"YOU'RE DATING THE SCHOOL PILOT!?"
